Hello I'm 8 days post op, it's challenging just remember to sip sip sip, get plenty of protein to help with hunger. I have found other protein because most people get burned out drinking a lot of shakes. I found the Oikos triple 0 Greek yogurt and has 15 grams of protein vanilla flavor. Also if you're in the pureed stage you can take your meats and puree into your broth or if you guys have ever tried like the vegetarian Morningstar products or Boca. I like the breakfast sausage patties with Morningstar and some other things so just if you want something to snack on for protein their 9 or 10 grams of protein per patty you can take a look at the other products also good to puree in broth. I'm not a fan of artificial sweeteners because they make me feel like crap and also they have so many bad chemicals in them I try to stick with things with stevia and it but it's challenging to find some things. I hope this information is helpful to you guys and I wish everyone well on this journey we're all on[emoji4] Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Going back on Liquids

I would never go back to an all liquid diet. I could never sustain it for more than a day or two. Plus I don't want to be thrown back into "diet mentality" again, and I'm afraid that would do it (at least for me). I'm also mostly vegetarian (I eat meat maybe once a week tops). I eat a lot of beans and dairy products, though, so I don't have trouble meeting my protein goals, but I usually have a protein shake as my mid-morning snack just so I don't obsess about protein all day. I know if I have that shake, I'll always meet my goals. Plus, I'm one of those odd birds who actually LIKES protein shakes!

    Got stuck

Well, I went in today. Yea. Worst day of my life. They had to put me under. I was truly stuck. They pushed it through. It was a piece of meat. As a cattle rancher, I am truly considering becoming a vegetarian. Sad day! Seriously, felt like removing it entirely. Feel like a huge failure, with my huge mistake.

    Carbs and Fat?

I have similar kinda profile though low calories for now because of the full fluid phase. I just spoke to my dietician today and I think she's okay with my Carbs and fats profile. On our program, we have to get all our proteins from whole foods and since I am vegetarian, most of it comes from dairy products like milk, yogurt and cottage cheese. And dairy products come with good amount of carbs. Hence my carbs and protein profile looks more or less similar. Because no protein powder, I think my carbs won't be as low as other programs. So hopefully it works for me as I continue with similar trend.
  6. Hello, friendly neighborhood vegetarian here. TVP is a good sub, lentils are not bad. I really like using the Explore Asian bean based pastas. The net carbs end up coming out fairly low.You can then make a veg ragu or meat sauce. Easy and tasty. Ricotta bakes are good. Basically just the filling from stuffed shelled baked in ramekins topped with cheese and sauce. Not sure how low you consider low carb. I honestly don't worry about low carb. If it's plant based ( from Beans or veg) it doesn't seem to effect my weight loss at all. I do avoid "white carbs" such as breads, crackers, traditional pastas and white rice. On the rare occasions I do eat rice I eat brown or black. I think if you make a basic dish for him you can make any lean Protein for yourself and then just add that to your meal. I don't use a lot of recipes, I just kind of wing it in the kitchen. For healthy veg recipes I would try pinterest and then adapt.

    Major struggles

As someone who is on a fixed income, I can say what helps me most is food prep and food logging. On Sunday I boil a few eggs (a cheap and easy source of protein). This way I always have a go to breakfast so there's no excuse for skipping breakfast. I also make a pot of whatever grain I plain to use for the week. Typically quinoa or brown rice. Both can be used for sweet or savory meals. They can also be served as a side dish or made into a stir fry. I shop farmer's markets because they are plentiful in my area. I buy fresh fruit in season and freeze half. If strawberries are on sale for $1 a pint, but 2 freeze, one. Over the winter I can still have fruit. If canned Beans are on I buy that. If not I buy dry beans and make a pot at during Sunday food prep. It's another great source of Protein and can be added to stir fries, made into a Soup or served with sunny side up or poached eggs for a protein rich meal. I'm vegetarian but if you eat meat, again make your protein during food prep. Something like chicken breast prepared simply with salt and pepper. Through the week it can be pulled and served with BBQ sauce, made into chicken salad, and added to a stir fry. I also find cooking from scratch tend to be healthier and cheaper. I buy plain rolled oats. I add them to smoothies, make over night oats or serve them hot. It take a while to get started, but once you get into the mind set of making a freezer stash and doing Sunday night food prep, you can do prep in an hour or less. The best part is through the week each week should take no more than 15 - 20 mins to assemble and you save money because you have less waste since everything is accounted for.

January Exercise - HAPPY NEW YEAR! :)

You rock babygrl, it is sooo hard to go grocery shopping and not by meat, dairy, eggs, etc.....I know. I did it today. I'm not going vegetarian, but I think I'm cutting out dairy, for now... And Stefanie, gotcha, no more nasty dairy talk. It is quite disgusting!

Not sure if I can do 'pur?ed foods'

I'm in the mushie/puree stage as well. One thing I've been loving.. is the vegetarian (low fat) refried Beans mixed in some salsa, a little shredded cheese then bake in the oven. I take greek yogurt (plain) add in the powder mix of ranch to make a lil sour cream ranch taste and top off the beans. LOVE IT! I was so tired of the liquid phase, not because of the foods but I was tired of just 'drinking' everything

    Shocking Information (HRT - production)

Slightly off topic, but not really.. is everyone aware of what KFC does to the chickens they raise for those delicious buckets of golden goodness? It's horrifying and I doubt I'll ever eat there again. No telling what the fast food industries are doing to cows in order to pump out the millions of burgers we as a nation eat every day. *sighs* Sad, very sad. And I'm not a vegetarian or an animal rights activist. Those poor horses. If you want to get really shocked. They are hiring women in China to get pregnant so they can take the unborn child and use it for stem-cell research. Now there's something to cry about.

karynj: there are a ton of gluten free products available, you should have no issues finding healthy and delicious foods. Try talking with local chefs as well, they can help you with gluten free recipes using vegetarian products that taste great. Congratulations Vanessa!

The fact that red meat, pork, fish, and chicken (all animal proteins) take up to 3 days to completely digest was enough to keep me vegetarian (in addition to so many other things). I'll check out your blog, I'm always keen to try new vegetarian recipes.

I have been a ovo-lactovegetarian off and on for a few years. But since I got my lapband I find I can't eat meat or eggs at all without sliming like crazy! So about a year ago I went back to being a lacto-vegetarian and find it incredibly satisfying, both mentally and physically. I coudn't be a vegan, though--I love cheese and dairy products too much!

Pretty much any ethnic food is better than American for vegetarians. Plus it's much more colorful, which generally means there are more Vitamins and nutrients (e.g. multicolored vegetables vs potatoes and bread). Now if only I could learn how to cook all of that delicious food at home!

    Vegetarians and Vegans

Hello everyone, I am glad you started this thread even though it seems like it has bee a little while since anyone posted. I have had my band for about 5 years and I have been a vegetarian for about 3.5. I actually had my band too tight for over 4 years and they told me this was actually hurting me because now I had to overcome the natural tendency to eat carbs bc they go down easier and being a vegetarian and lacking Protein. I recently got my third adjustment after taking almost all my Fluid out to get relief from heartburn. Now I feel like I am at a great place bc I am not getting overly hungry and fill up easily on Beans, Greek yogurt, and egg whites while still being able to eat great veggies (I could barely eat 3 pieces of broccoli before I figured my fill level out). I love being a vegetarian and I hope to go full vegan in the future, with my band, and losing weight like a rockstar! I would love to join a recipe group on FB if that is still an option. Nice to meet you!

The silken tofu is excellent to add to Protein shakes, it gives them a really nice smooth and creamy texture and you get some good fat and added protein. How have the other vegetarians / vegans in here found dining out after WLS? Normally I would eat things like Thai, Vietnamese, Sushi, Falafel, but those all have things that I shouldn't eat now due to the potential for sticking (falafel and rice especially).
  18. Quick and easy, hot artichoke dip with artichoke hearts. Cheesy artichoke dip has become one of the most popular side dish around the world. It is a food regarded suitable for people following the vegetarian diet. Baking is the preferred method of preparing cheesy artichoke dip. It is popular dish of American cuisine. The cheesy texture of the cheesy artichoke dip sets it apart from others of its kind. A wonderful, rich appetizer, that is extremely delicious. ENJOY!! Vegetarians and Vegans

Hi Acadia! I am a former lacto-ovo vegetarian (for 5-6 years) in the late 1990's-early 2000's. I have not eaten red meat since I was in college 20 years ago. Now I mostly eat fish and some poultry, dairy and soy products for my Protein. One of the dietitians strongly suggested not to go back to a vegetarian/vegan diet post WLS. However somewhere down the line I'd like to cut back even more on my animal intake. I'd love to see some of your resources.... add me as a friend if you wish And congrats on your surgery!!! Susan

    Vegetarians and Vegans

I saw the surgeon and dietitian today for the very first time. I am more than dissatisfied with the dietitians advice for vegetarian/vegans. For the next 6 months, they want me to follow a liver reduction diet, which for a vegan, reduced food intake to soy and some vegetables. No fruit, no grains. She had little to no knowledge of a vegan diet. My husband has been vegetarian for a year and has made the switch to vegan within the past two weeks. I eat his diet at home, but when I am out I do consume meat. This is going to be very difficult. I'm not sure how to approach all of this.

    Vegetarians and Vegans

Hi everyone! I was banded 12-31-12 (NYE). I have yet to meet with my "nutritionist"...the dr is insisting on this as I have lost almost no weight since surgery. I am at 202 lbs still. I am dreading this nutritionist visit because I have been a lacto-ovo-vegetarian since age 9...so going on 21 years. Non of my family is vegetarian. I just kind of woke up one day and said I wasn't going to eat meat anymore and I never have. I don't do most yogurt either as I do not eat anything with Gelatin in it. I have found one Greek Yogurt that does not contain gelatin so I am happy about that. When I got pregnant with my first 2 kids the doctors panicked when they found out i was a vegetarian and rushed me off to a nutritionist. both times she was not able to tell me anything i didn't already know. I am not optimistic that this nutritionist will do anything other than try to talk me in to eating meat again. That is not happening. Anyways, the P.A. at my dr office keeps trying to tell me it is unlikely i will ever lose weight on the band being a vegetarian...not because i can't get enough Protein, but because the density of vegetarian foods will not stimulate the nerves to make me feel full like meat will. Can anyone give me some advice on filling vegetarian foods/meals and encouragement on how you have lost weight with a vegetarian diet? I am not really wanting to listen to anyone tell me to start eating meat again or explain why i can't lose weight without meat! People who eat meat just try to get me to do it their way.

3 months post op & discouraged!!

Please don't beat yourself up. If you are able to eat 3 plates, it means 2 things. 1) You have not yet reached a point where you have restriction (and may need another fill, or two). 2) The foods you are eating are not solid enough (solids are Protein & veggies) so it is sliding straight through the band. A third possibility is that you are eating for too long. Most bandsters eat for no longer than 20-30 minutes (or stop if full before then naturally!) Motivation is one of those funny things. I found it really hard to find, and keep motivation in the beginning. It was when I made up my mind that this was not a "diet" but a lifestyle change, one that will be with me for life, and made changes to my diet, and exercise that I could live with, that I saw sustained motivation. And then I started losing real weight. Maybe if you try walking for 10 minutes 3 times a day for a week, then 15 minutes a twice a day for a week, then work up to the full 30 minutes a day the week after that. 10 minutes, 3 times a day, is a whole lot less overwhelming than 30 minutes, if you know what I mean. And as for your diet, well, do you have a dietitian that you can talk to? I found in the early days of my becoming a vegetarian it was a big help (I became a veggie at about 6 months post op) Good luck with everything

    Prescribed vegan diet

Hi! You know, I decided long ago to join the ranks of a vegetarian, one person advised me to start, for my health and lose weight. Read more: http://happybody.tv/vegan-diet-and-weight-loss/ I'm just trudging on the fact that I do not eat fish, meat and seafood. I started to cook, for what I did not like before, and cooking is now a pleasure, and it turns out magically delicious.
