  1. Thanks ! I think I am taking too many calories 1500+. I have a problem that I am a vegetarian so can't eat lean meats. Please tell what was your weight on the date of surgery ?
  2. congratulations! That must have been a great feeling. I loved the "thin, healthy, fit and glowing" comment. Are you a vegetarian? Can you share any info on your plant-based diet and what works best for you? (I'm a vegetarian so love to learn from VSGers ahead of me about a focus on plant foods.)

Fiddleman, the chicken skewers look like something my husband would like (I'm vegetarian but do cook meat for him). Did you find them fresh or frozen at Costco? Thanks.

    What's for dinner?

I like butternut squash for something starchy, but good for you. Target sells it in frozen cubes. I just saute it quickly or add it to stir frys. I do better with whole grains, which fill me up better. Brown rice, 100% whole grain bread, and whole wheat Pasta. I often eat sweet potatoes instead of white potatoes too. For even lower carb side dishes, it's probably gonna be veggies. For variety, I roast them in the oven (cauliflower, brussel sprouts, asparagus, summer squash all do well), stir fry them, or eat them in Soups or salads. One of my summer favs is garlic lime chicken, http://savingdinner.com/garliclimechicken/ , with a salad of baby butter lettuce, sliced almonds, and a few mandarin orange segments. In spring, while you're roasting Cornish game hens, throw in a pan of veggies. Add a little balsamic vinegar right at the end for a little kick. I also love this soup recipe: http://savingdinner.com/healthy-vegetarian-recipes/soup-good-food/ To make it lower carb, add more veggies and leave out the potatoes. Lynda

    LAPBAND DIDN'T WORK FOR ME

I've had my lapband for 5 years. It has never worked for me. I lost 24 pounds on the liquid diet and I have managed to keep about 20 of that off. But, I never lost any weight with the band. I've had 13 fills and they kept saying, "Oh they put a large band in you". They finally sent me to the nutritionist who was a 90 pound vegetarian (not sure why she felt the need to tell me that) who was more interested in her phone than me. Her big suggestion after glancing at my diet sheet was to tell me if I get hungry in the afternoon, to have tuna on cucumber slices. Really? $16,000 and that's the advice I get? I left that day feelling like this whole thing was a mistake and I never went back. Now, five years later, I'm having pain around the port. I guess I'll have to go back, but I'm not looking forward to that. My advice would be to really do your research before you spend this kind of money. I would not do it again and I would have to advise other people to really think about it before they did it. Pam Stevens
  7. I'm glad I found and read this whole thread before posting. I will likely go with the 90%/90% approach. I have done all low carb before, and it led to a binge. I lost 100 pounds through low carb and Hcg, and eventually felt like I "deserved" cake and McDonalds, and of course, gained half back. I was SO tired of punishing myself. I LOVE healthy foods...all kinds of fruit, every veggie, some vegetarian options, wheaty/healthy tasting things, all of that. I can do without Doritos, but I think getting yelled at over a mango or oven roasted potato wedges or chick peas is CRAZY and SUPER unhealthy! I am only almost 3 weeks out, but I don't want to obsess over food anymore, eating it or not eating it. I want to focus on my family, friends, and living a life free of food addictions. For everyone who is relaxed and regains, I have seen the post of someone who was super-strict and then regains. I just wish everyone well. And remember, if you are super-relaxed, and it's not working, it's never too late to revert to Atkins induction-style eating!
  8. A lot of people like Wendy's chili (I don't eat it bc I'm a vegetarian) or a side of refried beans from Taco Bell. You can also get salad with a side of black beans (Taco Bell, Chipotle). Better if you can plan ahead to avoid fast food but those are some good options.

TES, I'm going to go ahead and PM you! Just to give a basic idea to anyone who is interested, though: There are many different causes for anemia, of which nutrition (rather, the lack of it) is the most common cause. Iron, B12, folic acid, and even Vit. C (and lots of other nutrients) all play their rolls in preventing anemia. If in case nutrition is not a factor, then the other causes left include decreased absorption of nutrients, or blood loss. A blood smear helps to confirm the cause and point us towards obtaining a diagnosis. Decreased absorption can be easily tested, if that is suspected. In women, heavy or prolonged periods are usually implicated in low iron levels. These days, there is an increase in gastric and duodenal ulcers, which cause minute amounts of blood loss that go completely unnoticed. Stool samples and medical histories will help with these situations. Of course, this is only the tip of the iceberg! The point is, being a vegetarian will not cause anemia, if you take steps to ensure your meals are nutritious and balanced. At the same time, eating loads of meat will also not prevent anemia, if there is an underlying problem!

There are a few reasons your iron would be so low, along with your B12. Nutrition would be the most common cause, in which case Feedyoureye and O.T.R. have given some good tips. However, I would talk to your doctor about ruling out any other possible causes for your anemia. There is no reason anyone on a well balanced vegetarian diet should actually require meat to maintain their iron and B12 levels. I'm going to send you a PM with some things you might want to look into!

I have been moving toward a vegetarian lifestyle. Not ready to fully give up meat yet but definitely want a cleaner, less-processed food lifestyle. Well, until I got my labs back and my doctor told me that I absolutely HAD to keep eating meat. My ferritin level came back at 4. Any lower and I have to have iron infusions. My b12 is on the low side and d3 is very low. I've been eating meat but incorporating other sources of protein the last few months- beans, quinoa, amaranth, tvp, etc. I feel I am eating healthier than I ever have. I don't want to supplement with oral iron (I am so freaking constipated from it!). Why is my iron so low? I'm wondering if I don't absorb it for some reason. Can I continue to move toward a vegetarian lifestyle and have healthy iron stores? Do any of you struggle? I'm almost 11 months post-op. Any advice is appreciated.

    Anxiety Attacks????

I haven't had a full blown panic attack since being banded, but I have had some racing heart episodes. Especially when waking up in the morning. I'm going to keep an eye on it for a few more days, because last night I transitioned from mushy/soft food to ground turkey; thus starting myself back on good old animal Protein (yeah!). Interestingly, this morning I didn't have the same racing that I've had over the past weeks since surgery. I don't know if there is a correlation, but generally I'm not one who does well on a vegetarian type of diet. My body requires some sort of meat protein, whether it be fish, chicken, beef, etc. So I'm thinking that possibly the racing has been a blood sugar issue. I don't really know, but I will watch over the next few days, as this type of protein is added back. My other thought on the panic attacks, is that possibly there is a lot of underlying fear with this life change. It's huge! I don't know......just throwing out some ideas. I have a lot of underlying fear with this, especially when I read some of the posts on this site. I'm happy on one hand, then freaked out that this thing might bite me in the ass at a later date. It's a lot to take on, physically and emotionally. Now....with ALL that being said, I think you should call your doctor. Whatever the collective "our" experiences are, everyone has individual issues; health and otherwise. It's best that your doctor rule out anything more serious. And I hope for your sake that the panic attacks don't continue. I know how HORRIBLE and out of control they feel. The worst!
  14. I'm a vegetarian. Sleeved 9 weeks ago. doing great! no issues getting protein in. Lots of beans, tofu, soy products, whey protein, Greek yogurt, tempeh, low-fat cheese, etc.

    Gastric Sleeve for Vegetarians

hi! I'm getting sleeved May 2nd. I'm not a vegetarian. However, I cook a lot with meatless products simply because I'm sort of germ phobic about having raw meat in my house. So I limit what I cook with meat-wise at home, but I don't exclude it from my diet completely. I also have a good friend who is vegan, so I've learned a lot of alternative methods to make things meatless so we can have dinner parties. I plan to get most of my Protein from dairy and Protein Shakes. I'm hoping my tastes don't change too drastically because I actually don't mind the shakes and they are a very convenient way to get the protein you need. I take it from your list that you're not vegan. If that's the case, it shouldn't be too much more challenging for you to get your protein than it is for any other sleever.

    when is your surgery date?

My surgery date is May 7th and already I'm a bit overwhelmed with the protein intake, I'm a vegetarian and worried I will get bored on the same diet every single day.
  19. I am having surgery on May 6th and would like to connect with any other vegetarians and chat about protein options so I don't get bored eating the same thing day after day. Eggs, cottage cheese, tofu, PB..... lets chat

Worries about my surgery and life changes that need to be made.

She might just be a vegetarian She didn't say I couldn't have it, but said that most people choose to not eat it after surgery because it is much harder to digest. I don't even have steak very often (3 kids ages 5 and under...steak is a luxury!) but every once in awhile when Hubbs and I go to dinner kid free (once a year!) there is nothing better than a good, juicy steak! The thought of not getting to ENJOY that every once in awhile made me a little sad....and then the thought that I was getting SAD over FOOD that I hadn't even had taken away from me made me MAD AT MYSELF!!! How foolish that I've let food control my thoughts so much That is great to hear that you can still eat meats. Not that I couldn't live without them, I just want that choice
  23. You said they told you we can not digest meat. That is the majority of the food I eat. I never heard this. As far as steak, I enjoy it just not a lot at a time. You need to read more posts to see what people are going thru and the kinds of food they eat. Maybe your nutritionalist is a vegetarian and does not want others to enjoy meat.
  24. good to know, FeedyourEye--unfortunately, mushrooms are the one vegetable (or more aptly, fungus) I just can't eat. People think it's weird since so many vegetarians love mushrooms--but I just can't do it...not even the portabellos. However, this is super-interesting, and I am going to tell my husband, who loves mushrooms. Thanks!
  25. Thanks, that is a good suggestion too. I do have my vitamins checked regularly. My B12 is normal, for which I'm thankful, since I've been a vegetarian most of my adult life (I'm middle-aged). I take a supplement daily. Also, my vit D was low and I'm taking a supplement, though my RD said basically everyone's is low. Mine was really, really low, so I'm hoping I feel better with the supplementation. I started it pre-op and it came up a little.
