    Frightened of future . . .

I'm 10 months out and I have an appetite. It's not the same as before surgery, but some days I feel strong hunger and some days I can graze all day long. Here's how it's different than before surgery - when I feel hunger, true hunger, I eat a Protein filled meal. Breakfast is a Jimmy Dean turkey sausage pattie and a scrambled egg topped with some cheese. This keeps me satisfied for hours, especially if I wait 45 minute to drink anything. Prior to surgery, I'd be snacking in an hour or two. So I'm eating less than before at the meal and I'm not eating as soon after the meal...the sleeve is working. On days that I graze, it's usually because I gave in to the carb monster. Maybe I ate part of a bagel for breakfast or I ate something else with a lot of carbs. For me, carbs are like a drug - once I give in, it affects me the entire day. If I identify it, I can usually break it with a shake and a lot of will power. If I don't identify it I will spend a lot of time in the kitchen grabbing a few bites here and there. Early on, like the first 6 months, you need to change your tastes (cutting carbs), start moving your body, and change your lifestyle (getting Snacks out of the house, living the "protein first" rule, etc.). The sleeve helps you with that - it's simply a tool in your toolbox along with your will power, good choices, exercise routine, etc. Those are all tools you have in your toolbox that you need to use. WLS is not a magic bullet - it is hard work, harder than I ever expected it to be. Every day I need to make a commitment to myself to life my life a certain way - I need to eat protein packed meals, I need to limit my carbs and I need to exercise. Those are the things I can control. Some days it's hard work, other days are easier. I wouldn't say I have a "dieters' mentality", this is just my new normal and how I live my life now.

    Check up

I was banded 12/10. Lost 20 lbs right away between the pre op diet and being afraid to eat. Then I got stuck. Plateau'd for 3 weeks as the swelling subsided and I could eat more. I didn't gain but it was so frustrating. Now suddenly I am losing again. Really have to concentrate on what and how much I am eating. I get my first fill next week. Down 26 lbs total so far. Yes, it is hard and frustrating, but it is such a relief to be losing weight and not gaining it. It's just a daily struggle to eat right and healthy. But I'm doing it! Thank you to all who are on this site. Very reassuring and helpful. Xoxo

    Problem with band tightness

Gosh, it is so easy to forget given that you haven't been feeling any restriction in years. I'm newly banded and have had my first fill, but not yet in the "sweet spot." My second fill will be after Christmas. The dietician I work with has trained me to chew, chew, chew--20 to 30 chews before swallowing. After you resolve your current issue try making a game out of chewing. I know it sounds funny but it helps me if I count in my head and envision a train...chew, chew, chew. Had lapband surgery 10/12/16

    One year anniversary!

I am down 70lbs. and embarrassingly enough, without exercise. The first six fills I lost nothing but finally got my band in the place it needs to be. I'm surprised everyone seems to be dealing with the same issues as myself. Usually the first half of the week I feel like my band may have broke because I could eat tons then the latter half I'm basically on liquids. Funny thing is my friend asked what exactly it was that I ate to feel the band was broke and I told her I could eat half a chicken breast and almost a full piece of pizza...the realization is when I assume I'm "pigging out" it's still not that much food. The only tricky part is understanding when I can eat and I can't. If my band is super tight for 4 days I know I could have a serving of ice cream or a small slurpee and be ok but when I actually am eating I have to check myself and be like "marisa why are you at 7-11 getting a slurpee when you actually ate a full meal today". So far I've caught myself and ate accordingly. Since Thanksgiving I feel like this band is truly working and I'm working with it. Couldn't be happier. Side note: I had dinner with a man that was banded 10 years earlier, he said his band no longer works. As he proceeded to tell me his issues I sat there and watched him take and entire rack of ribs and cut them into little pieces and pour an obscene amount of ketchup to make a Soup like meal. At that moment I couldn't have been happier...after 10 years it wasn't his band that gave up....it was him!!!

    One year anniversary!

I was banded a year ago March 23rd and I am down 112 pounds! (From 264 to 152.) I have gone from a size 18/20 to a size 8! I crave and want food normally, but am full much quicker. My restriction seems to go from not enough to too much from day-to-day. It is still a learning process as to how to eat successfully every time. Every time I think I want to call and get an unfill because I can hardly eat, I have a day where I feel like a bottomless pit. Also, I am now 10 weeks pregnant with baby #2!!!

    Weight lose stopped

Question to those have been successfully banded. I lost about 21 lbs since June first. 10 of those was from my pre op. I have stop losing weight and at a stand still. Could it be because I need my band filled? I didn't have it filled during surgery. My first fill is on the 17th of July. My nerves are on edge because now I am thinking "what if I am in that small percentage that is not successful with the band". Should I be worried? Is this something that happens? Thanks
  9. I am terrible to give advice - I struggled with the band, for the most part unsuccessfully, for 10 years before I took the plunge to make a change. I do think you need to be very careful to not be overfilled as that can cause many problems. You SHOULD NOT be vomiting regularly. I am told the band is better now and you should be able to lose weight without needing to carry a barf bag with you. For me, I was either constantly hungry, or in pain when I ate dense Protein. I just didn't do well. I guess it seems awfully early to give up on the band, maybe a second opinion, or maybe working with your current team on finding that "sweet spot"

    Are revisers different?

I had my band in 01/05 and to me it was very painful the first 4 days. I have a very low tolerance for pain. I had my revision on 12/20/13 and it was painless, hardly any pain, I was a little tender on left side for abt two to three days. I was really nervous abt the pAin w the sleeve. I had watch several u tube videos..some said no pain and others said worst pain in their life. So I wasn't really sure what to think. I was really scared but went ahead with it. When I came to I couldn't believe that it didn't hurt. I was pleasantly surprised and oh so relieved. No my only problems was EXTREME nausea and Diarrhea... My diarrhea has stop and the nausea not quiet as bad. Good luck in your venture
  12. i wish i could say i'm excited, but i'm just disappointed that it's not for another three weeks when just three weeks ago they told me probably 10/21 or 10/28. well, i'm also in the middle of a horrific insulin attack (low blood sugar) and dealing with multiple production problems at work, so it ain't the best day. yay
  13. That sucks you live so far away! I added you as a friend so we can keep in contact....I have so many appts. set in march...start my 2 week, 1000 cal liquid diet on 3/10, should be fun!

    Facelift Done In Cr

It's been 8 months since I had my face lift. Everyone tells me I look great, but I am very disappointed that my face is still numb. I am afraid it will not go away. I was miserable the first 7-10 days after gall bladder surgery. It was a much harder recovery than sleeve surgery.

    Failure

Thanks Sarah.... I feel like I am finally on my way to a healthy life...even 10 pounds (now actually 11.4 pounds!!) feels wonderful. I can't wait to say "good-bye" to the remaining pounds.

    gastric bypass more effective?

statistically speaking, you'll lose more with bypass than you will with sleeve, but it's only about a 5% difference. Plus an average is just an average - you'll find people who fall on either side of the average. There are people who are extremely successful with both surgeries - and people who fail with both surgeries. 14 lbs is a lot. You may lose that the first three or four months, depending on a whole host of other factors (sex, age, metabolic rate, activity level, starting BMI, etc), but weight loss slows down a lot after that. I started at well over 300 lbs. I lost 16 lbs the first month, maybe 12 or so lbs a month for a couple of months after that, then I think around 10 lbs a month until I was about 7 months out, and then 5-8 lbs a month until I got about a year out. After that, things really slowed down until it finally stopped at around 20 months out. P.S. With your starting BMI, your weight loss isn't going to be really speedy. You WILL lose it if you're committed to your program, but 14 lbs a month is overly optimistic for someone at your weight. Most of us start out much heavier.

    7 months and a size....what

@@Kathy812 I have had most of my weight drop in the first few month's. It was dropping about 10-15 pounds and it has slowed down now. Exercise was a requirement at first for me. It changed into something that makes me feel good and I take my stress out at the gym. ( I no longer cope with stress by eating) Exercise before surgery was none. After surgery I walked 30 minuets on my treadmill about 3 day's a week. With the weight coming off I was able to up my walking to an hour about 5 days a week. At three months out my treadmill became boring. I sold it on craigslist and bought a gym membership. At four months I was at the gym for an hour doing cardio. I switch up my cardio so my body does not get the chance to hold on to the weight long. (elliptical machine, lateral machine and jogging on a treadmill) I pushed up the resistance as I got stronger. I also added weight lifting three days a week for a half hour. What a difference. I have found that not only do i exercise because I physically can. Now it is something I love. (who knew) I am working with my trainer at the gym. I still do an hour of cardio. I am also lifting for an hour 3 days a week. I completed a 10K now working up to a half marathon. I kayak and snow shoe. I love to stay active. Find activities you have fun doing. Also find what motivates you. If you enjoy music get a good play list while you work out. Plenty of fitness websites and app's to look into for Ideas. I hope you are surprised by what you're body is able to do. If you have time check back in. I would love to see how things progress for you.

    Protein Question

Post op I didn't tolerate the shakes well, just too sweet. I'm 4 months post op and my main protein before back on normal food was 10 oz 1% milk + 1 scoop genepro flavorless protein powder (30+ grams of protein). Still my go to when I need protein.

    liver shrinking diet x 2

hi friends, I have been on my liver shrinking diet since last tuesday, I started off trying the milk n yoghurt diet but after running to the loo at tea time decided to do the food diet like last time, I have lost 10lb in 5 days, I will get weighed tomorrow and it could be more, I had put 6lb on since christmas, so am pleased to have got that off and a good start to being near to my 19 stone goal for the day of my op. I am finding the diet much easier this time and i think this is because i am having 2 eggs srambled on one slice of dry brown toast for the first meal of the day. I have a salad for lunch, 1 soya yoghurt and 1 apple at teatime and veg n lean meat cooked in my slow cooker for evening meal, i have being having 800 cals, 1 day i had 995, and lots of nas squash, tea with soya milk allowance. I am having mixed emotions this time, last time i was excited all the time, but as it was cancelled and 7 months later back on, until i wake up and they tell me it is done, I won't let myself be too excited. I know God is with me and my trust is in him, really hope i continue to be so positive and have no fear on the day, ive worked hard and waited 2 years 7 months for this, many friends are praying for me, thanks be to God, will write again before my op, x I know this is what i want and God is with me, its the natural feelings i have to ignore, and i will be so happy when i wake up to find its done. How i feel at the moment I would have it tomorrow.

    Long Weekend

You did better than I did. I'm 10 days POST-op (which isn't much different than pre-op diet). I decided I'm just not ready for outings like these where there is food and alcohol (and cigarettes). I know I will learn to handle these things, but right now I'm too new to this way of life. Good luck to you! The weekend will be over before you know it!!

How to you cook your fish?

I'm originally from the North and love haddock or cod, not fishy just nice white and flaky. Because it flakes when cooked, I like to just bake it in the oven in a glass pan lined with foil (easy clean up). I spray on a little butter, add a little lemon juice and cracked pepper and throw it the oven at 400 degs for 10 to 14 minutes. Now that I live in Florida, I like to grill mahi mahi or tuna steaks on the gas grill. They are a firmer fish and will stay together better on a grill (use Pam spray for grilling also). I still use lemon and cracked pepper to keep it simple, but there are alot of other seasonings and marinades to change it up also. Enjoy, fish is so good for you and great with just a small salad or some fruit.
