I had a plethora of NSVs this week that I totally didn't even realize! It's probably a good thing since the scale hasn't been moving much (almost 5 weeks out). I need any kind of victory I can get! 1. went off the (low) diving board at a public pool for the first time in years! I have a torn meniscus and was always afraid I wouldn't be able to get up the ladder. I also had fears of snapping the board in half! lol 2. I went out to dinner for the first time since being allowed real food and stayed on the plan. I actually went out twice, got chicken once and seafood once (all baked or grilled)... had maybe two bites of the accompanying mashed potatoes and rice (forgot to substitute my sides). 3. Went out bar-hopping with college friends and didn't drink a single drop of alcohol! These friends do not know about surgery and I want to keep it that way for the time being. I had to get very creative since there were many toasts to the newly engaged friend and to my weight loss (ha ha- the irony). An 8oz bottle of Water fit great in my purse for my trips to the bathroom! lol 4. I actually went to bars both nights this weekend and made it home without stopping for fast food. I used to be the queen of 4th meal- Taco Bell, Wendys, McDs. I was ssoooo tempted (this was the hardest NSV) on my way home because I was actually hungry. Instead, last night when I came home I had a few salami roll-ups and tonight had some milk. 5. I finally joined My Fitness Pal and started tracking my food. It's definitely not as difficult or time-consuming as I expected (the reason I put it off). 6. I went to see my psychologist for the first time since surgery. I was seeing her long before surgery and she was actually the biggest advocate of this for me and facilitated the discussion with my mom because I was too terrified. Anyway... she didn't recognize me! Legitimately, she wasn't just saying that. I was wondering why she didn't say hi to me when I saw her sitting outside the building! Whoo hoo! As always, thanks for all the support! Love this place!

What to expect regarding weight loss and eating....
nkara replied to mom2cjpx4's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree it's so hard to not want the fast weight loss but I know for me my body does not loose weight fast. EVER:cursing: So for me I've lost 11 lbs since surgery which was 11/12/09. I am still on the pureed diet. My doctor has a gradual diet program so I went from Clear Liquids the first week to full liquids the second week and now pureed for 2 weeks and soft solids for 2 weeks. I am expecting to loose between 1 - 2 lbs a week but I will be surprised if I do. I would like to loose a total of 80 lbs and my doctor said it would take me 2 years to do it. I look at it this way.. easy and slow will be better health wise for me and I won't have to worry about excess skin. :sneaky: hopefully. Everyone is different and your journey is just beginning so good luck and let us know how you make out. -
Weight Loss Prior To Surgery.... Have Any Advice?fo
NtvTxn replied to Sannah's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A couple more things! READ LABELS!!!! Look at calories, fat and sugar!!! Salads are fine if you are using FF dressing, otherwise, the calories add up fast with the dressing, cheese, croutons.....not to mention some who put bacon of some sort on it as well. Beware! I keep a bag of frozen chicken and also a bag of shrimp on hand. Both easy to cook and both high in Protein. A can of tuna with 2 TB of Lite mayo is 13 grams of protein per 1/4 cup. I put the tuna on Special K crackers. 17 is one serving, you probably won't eat 17. One can of tuna makes 1/2 cup. More in protein and more than 2 servings if you add an egg and a couple of pickles. 1% Cottage cheese, I call it the Breakfast of champions. 13 grams of protein per half cup I believe!!! -
Steve, if you are losing any weight then you are the perfect example of your own statement. To the OP, when the server asks you what you want to drink, simply say "nothing, and please don't even bring a glass of Water." If he/she still brings the water, politely remind them that you didn't want water. You have to realize and respect that your problem/desire is a pretty unique one in restaurant world; most of the complaints servers hear are that they didn't get the drink to the table fast enough, or that they didn't keep the water glasses full! Also, sometimes the server isn't the person who brings the table water, sometimes it's a busboy. Just say "no thank you, I don't want any".

I booked my surgery date about a week after first learning that I could do it affordably in Mexico (Dr. Ortiz) and booked it for just 3 weeks later! It was all very fast and now, 2 months after surgery, I still have moments of "OMG I can't believe I actually did this"! But it's all good - never have I had a moment of regret. What you and everyone else has said is true - there are always reasons to eat - and you'll always be able to eat! Just not quite as much. It hasn't even occured to me that I won't be able to eat as much for Christmas. In a way I just need to think about the usual things - be careful not to eat too much candy (goes right through the band) and other sweets that are around at that time. I say go for it - do it while you're feeling ready for it. Good luck!

I'm only 3+ weeks out but just starting on mushies and still eating too fast. I'm really bad about eating fast and about paying attention. What happens to me is that I get a pain in my breast bone. Once I had to barf up a bit to feel comfortable. The rest of the time, I just stop eating and the feeling fades. I get it while drinking too because I keep forgetting and drinking too fast. But obviously liquid doesn't get "stuck". Keep in mind, there is no stoma with the sleeve like there is with a band. That means food doesn't really get "stuck" or at least that much. It can be painful and you can get "foamies" if you eat too much or too fast, but it's not exactly the same as when a piece of food just won't go down because it's too big to pass through the band's stoma. When I was looking into both, one of the things that struck me was how many banded people had trouble with all sorts of foods compared to how many sleeved people had trouble. Most sleeve people can eat anything, or almost anything, once they get past the first 6-12 months. __________________ Originally posted at www.lapbandtalk.com

Less than a week what if stage
Miss Mac replied to theotherfatgirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok, here's the thing about surgery. My sleeve was my 12th, including 2 c-sections, spinal disc repair, gall-bladder out, appendix, blah, blah, blah, and was the easiest recovery, least painful of them all. They will give you an IV. You will feel a little prick. My first ex-husband was a little prick. (My second ex-husband was a big prick)! They will give you a mild sedative, just enough so that you are can be relaxed and don't really care what is happeneing. When the get you to the OR, they will help you navugate your mello self onto the operating table. Then they will ask you to count to 100 backwards - or something distracting like that. 100, 99, 98, wake up, wake up, hey you're all done, You did just fine. There you go, on your way to a new you. You can expect to be nauseous for a few days, maybe even until you complete your post-op meds, but they will give you something for it. No lie, even if you have an uncomplicated recovery, you may still have an uncomfortable recovery. It is a right of passage to good health and being able to be more involved in your own life. For me, I did not really get any energy back until I got on regular cooked foods at 4 1/2 weeks. It is hard to believe that next week I go for my 18 month check-up. How did all of those slowest days days of pre-op liquids, post-op diet phases, and multiple crazy-making stalls go by so fast? 5 Days post op Bloat????
Joy332 replied to Kimmipuff's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow, this is my new reality too. I was banded a little over a week ago. Most pain is gone now, but everytime I eat (or drink a protein shake), I get really full-feeling, like bloated. Then, the rest of the afternoon, I am either burping or well, you know. This is not pleasant. Am I drinking or eating too fast? All I am having is protein shakes and thick soups (which is what the dr prescribed) and I am only having about a third of a cup of soup at one time. This is not good. Very uncomfortable and not great for socializing....I hope hope hope this will go away?? -
Not the best news..feeling defeated. Need Advice
LisaLou30 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Last week I had completed my pre surgery requirements for my insurance company and was told by my surgeon's office that they would be submitting for approval. However this morning I received a call from them that they have decided not to submit and will not until end of November. My surgeon feels that I have not lost enough weight and wants me to attend another NUT group appointment and lose 8 pounds. I had been working out 5-6 times a week and eating 1200-1400 calories and losing weight fast however 2 weeks ago by foot starting hurting horribly so I went to the doctor and found out that I have a stress fracture and will be in boot for 4-5 weeks. Since then I have been doing upper body weights but I am not losing any weight. My surgeon said that I need to lose 8 pounds by November 13th so that we can get everything set up for beginning of December but if not it will be pushed out until January because he takes the last 2 weeks of December off. I am an commercial insurance agent and can not afford to take time off in January. I am not giving up but just feeling a little defeated today. Any suggestions on what exercises I can do to help? Do I need to change my calories? Thanks for listening! -
Do stricture stmptoms occur suddenly?
Suprisedtobesleeved replied to Suprisedtobesleeved's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks. I'm going in today. I was fine with puréed food for two weeks then I had a terrible pain when having something I've eaten before after only 3 small bites with a baby spoon. I know I didn't eat too fast because I chew it as much as I can before swallowing if though its practically liquid. I've been able to get water and shakes in but there is pressure, tender feeling and I'm burping constantly even with small sips. Already taking Gerd meds 2x a day so don't think it's reflux. Just came out of nowhere. -
So, the materials I got from my surgery center said that I could choose between two pre op diet options. I could either do a two week diet of two protein shakes and one low calorie meal (like lean cuisine) or I could do nine days of only liquid protein and all the green vegetables I want. My husband seems to be concerned with me getting in less than 1200 calories as that slows my metabolism down especially coupled with three weeks of no real solid food. Does anyone know why we need to do this pre op diet anyway? I can understand fasting before the pre operative testing but why for nine days!? Has anyone not lost weight on the pre op diet and had their surgery delayed?

Welcome hon! Hey, you and me are going to have our surgeries in January! I am really excited. I've been on this form since Sept and have met a lot of nice folks. Look at the photos and you'll be able to put a face to a name with some of them. . they look great! They have done so well. . . don't worry I eat really fast too, I blame that on the military (they don't eat leisurely) . We'll have to keep in touch and share our experiences as well. . :001_huh:

My favorite fast food meal came from Jack in the box. I would get the ultimate cheese burger meal the cheese burger was 818 calories and the fires was 557 calories for a total of 1375 calories. Its surprise how much I use to eat. Now I may eat 600 to 700 calories in a day.

I meant, "HI"! That's what I get for typing too fast! Cindy

Impact of cold beverages, food
RestlessMonkey replied to emjay's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I drink Iced tea, cold Water, I eat leftovers directly from the refrigerator, no problems whatsoever. On the rare occasions that I have, say, a frozen cocktail, ice cream, a milkshake...no problems there either. Very cold (and very hot) liquids can cause esophageal spasms in some people. If it causes you pain, just avoid cold stuff, or hold it in your mouth a little longer so your body can warm it. It's no unlike, say, eating a popsicle or snow cone too fast when you were a kid and "freezing your throat". Usually it requires a quantity of the "offending item" ingested fairly quickly. Slowing down should help -
Im scared to over sip on my first day
Inner Surfer Girl replied to Ghada's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't think you can over sip. If you are sipping too fast or too much, you will definitely feel it. Just sip as much as you can, as often as you can. Listen to you body. -
Satisfied vs Full
DELETE THIS ACCOUNT! replied to stept04's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The way it was explained to me was this: If you feel like you just ate a big dinner and can't eat another bite, you're full. If you are simply no longer physically hungry, you're satisfied. This is why I was told pausing between bites was so important- to give your stomach time to send a signal to your brain "Oh, I'm not hungry anymore". (and of course so you don't get stuck by eating too fast). Honestly? It wasn't easy for me to learn. After spending my entire life stuffing myself silly and eating when I wasn't hungry- I didn't even really know what physical hunger felt like anymore. It's a pretty big learning curve at the beginning with the band. It's A LOT easier once you have adequate Fluid in your band, too. A lot of us also have "soft soft" signals when we're satisfied, too. Like mine is getting the hiccurps. Some will sigh, or their nose may Water a little. There's all different little body cues we learn to tune into and really listen to our bands and body. Hope that helps! -
Expectations of the band
crystal525 replied to elgrad's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Funny you ask this. See ... in the beginning, I decided to have the band because it was not too invasive and it was a slower loss than GB, so odds were good that I would not need excess skin removed. I told myself if I lost 100 pounds in 2 years, that would be fantastic. THEN...I was on here reading about people losing 20-30 pounds in the first month or two, and 10 pounds every month after that, and I got jealous. I was comparing my results too much to others' results and was becoming disappointed with myself--doubting myself...even though my results were still on track with my initial expectations. I had to stop reading the site for awhile. If I had read the POST-Operation posts PRE-Operation, maybe I would have been prepared for the aftermath of the actual surgery. I finally realized that my "new" expectations were too high and only based on what some others were experiencing. Eventually my fills started working and I started losing weight. I actually don't even think I'll be getting a fill at my appointment on Friday since I've lost 16 of my 34 pounds since April (yes...I only lost 18 pounds my first 4-5 months...). My 34 pounds (lost since surgery) is not alot, but where would I be without the Band? 10 pounds heavier? On another diet, only to gain 20 more over the next year? Now, I'm on my way to being 1/2 way to goal in my first year and AT goal in 2. My point here---don't let what you read here, and other people's successes make your expectations UNREALISTIC. Everyone is an individual so keep that in mind. This is NOT a fast and easy way to go. Exercise, eat right, and it'll work for you. I'm just happy that I can still eat most of what I like (it's harder, and I eat less of it, but can still enjoy most things except bread...). And -- I don't have to worry about how much heavier I'll be in the next year, or five years.... Good luck to you. -
My friend just came to visit. She asked to see my erosion pics cause she wanted to compare them to her Dad's recent horror story. He's a typical skinny guy who eats too fast. He was woofing down an apple that got stuck low in his esophagus. He freaked out and guzzled Water to push it through, but later almost bled to death. The ER surgeon, who had to repair his torn esophagus, said he would have been dead in one more hour if he didn't come in since he was literally bleeding to death. Now I have one more thing to nag at my husband for. He's 2 chews and a gulp, so either he slows down or I start blending his pizza. The stomach can be a very scary place.

Burping Causing Me Discomfort
Sooverit! replied to sour's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Me too I'm fine when eating but when I'm in the car it starts. Luckily too it doesn't just come out too often when I'm in a conversation or with others. I had 4 years of burpfree living after the band now suddenly it's a real problem. Hoping it's just that we're eating too fast and gulping air...certain food don't cause the gas. So food journaling for a day or two might help. -
since I've last posted my weight of 211 on the 16th,I thought I had not lost any weight at all.In fact a week ago my weight jumped up 4 pounds after I had some caramel popcorn (not a whole lot either) and a frozen yogurt. At the time my stress levels was at an all time high and we had to make some very very difficult life altering decisions.I really wished I could just eat and eat like before but HATED the weight that came back. After last weekend I decided to do the right things again but still didnt think I had lost any weight this week. Well, when I converted my weight from kilos to pounds I was super pleased to see I am down another 2 pounds.Yes, 209 today!!!!!! I am hoping for the weight loss to pick up a little again as I am really exercising hard now.I am also eating very clean foods again. One thing that bugs me though.Since my sugar fender bender I am experiencing what I believe is hunger. It feels physical to me.Might be head hunger though. Will have to explore this a little further but I am worried about this.I also feel at times that I want to eat more. When I eat only proteins I eat 3oz and do feel full but not satisfied. Anyhow,I am on my way with the weight loss again as I have already booked our next holiday and I NEED to be at least 30 pounds lighter by then...I will work my butt off for this! Will meet up with my Dubai sleeve buddies some time. They are all doing very very well. So,next entry might only be when I've dropped the next 5 pounds....but that is going to be soon and I am going to drop this fast...hehehe!
