  1. Thanks so much for the great advice, everyone! I am seeing the dietitian and PA today so I will ask about the liquids. Our guidelines don't limit the rate at which you consume liquids, but I try to use common sense and listen to my body. I can drink Water a lot more quickly than a Protein drink, for example (and right now, I thin my Protein drinks with almond mild bc I think it's easier on my sleeve). I am a vegetarian so won't be eating meat--but hopefully I'll feel that type of restriction with vegetarian protein sources that others feel with meat. I think it will make a difference even when I get to regular purees. My thin puree of oatmeal and peaches was about the same consistency as a Protein shake. But it did seem to fill me up a little more, maybe because it's just something different. I probably thinned it a little more than I needed to (we have to go to applesauce consistency) but I just wanted to be cautious the first time out. I pureed it in the Vitamix so it was more like cream of wheat. Thanks again--hearing everyone else's experiences really helps!! This forum is a great support and source of helpful information. I appreciate everyone taking the time to share.
  2. Megan - I would recommend you order samples of a variety of Protein drinks as you may not like or be able to tolerate the same things as others -- me, I can't tolerate any of them - they're all too thick and too sweet or taste too protein-y. I also am extremely lactose intolerant since surgery and have to be very careful what I drink. The OhYeah Protein Drink is lactose free and it doesn't seem to be too thick, so I have a few of them I drink every now and again. Dr. Aceves pre-op diet was very easy to follow - high protein, low carb. Be sure to drink LOTS of fluids, too. I ate lots of eggs and cheese and veggies. I also ate chicken and veggie burgers - the veggie burgers are really good and high in protein. Being vegetarian shouldn't hinder you on the pre-op diet.

    Vegetarian Sleevers?

I too am a vegetarian. I was trying to go vegan but that is not currently happening. I do tofu, eggs, I have protein shake for breakfast, yogurt, beans....you'll find lots of stuff online.

    Vegetarian Sleevers?

Hi all, I'm a vegetarian -have been my whole life- and had my VSG April 29th. My concern is less about getting enough protein and more about the eating proteins first rule. The majority of my protein sources are also carbs and the majority of my meals are mixed dishes and foods that I can't eat separately. Do you follow the rule of eating protein first? If so, how?
  5. My date is April 23 and I want to make life As easy as possible post op. any tips? I've already started upping my protein, taking iron, walking daily. What should I stock up On food wise? I'm Vegetarian but egg fish.

    Vegetarian Sleevers?

I'm a vegetarian too. I am still pre-op but I am trying to identify Proteins that I like and can be prepared quickly and easily or carried around with me. Here's my list so far: hard boiled eggs, greek yogurt, string cheese, seitan Jerky (I really like the Primal Spirits kind- they sell it at most natural foods stores and online), pistachios or almonds, pre-cooked brown lentils from Trader Joes (in the produce section.)

    Vegetarian Sleevers?

I am still pre-op also but am a vegetarian, and plan to stay that way. If you eat eggs, milk, beans, spinach, yogurt, nuts, it's all good sources of protein on top of the shakes. I also am scared for hair loss but I hear it grows back.
  8. Thank you and congrats! Great job! I have been staying low carb also. I am allowed "all foods" now also and I LOVE LOVE LOVE salads. Always have. But there isn't enough Protein in a salad. But I'll admit, I find myself ordering them often since I don't really like meat. I've never been a meat eater. I always try n pick out my chicken and eat it first. One restaurant salad will be 3-4 meals for me. But again, not the protein I'm needing. Wish I was more keen of meats. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App There are vegans and vegetarians who are post WLS. Do a search and figure out what they eat. I would love to live on veggies alone! I'll have to check that out. I hate being required to eat meat. Blah Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Back On Track Thread

Through the months I have found many good healthy snack foods. Unfortunately, it seems like I am tired of them all and only want junk right now. Repeat, then repeat again. My weight has gone up a bit, around 3-6 pounds the last 4 months, and with my eating the way it is... and exercising less because of bone spurs...Im looking at a dilemma. I about 12 pounds from my goal...and wont get there this way! My will power is BAD right now... I went back on PPIs to see if that might help the hunger...I can also really see stress turns on the "eat now" voice. I have approval to go to a physical therapist which might get me back on track with my dancing class... I do miss that a bunch. I guess I just really FEAR gaining more weight back...6 pounds is not horrible... I just want to feel like I continue to succeed and not fail (like every other time) My kitchen garden is kicking in, and I have more fresh veggies around, I am trying to cook and have stuff in the fridge that is ready to eat. I am making desert foods for on demand too... sf puddings, vegetarian sf jello with blueberries... this helps to some degree, but the junk is still a magnet to me. I hope when I get back to dance class things will get easier. I pack a bunch of little nibbles in my lunch... fruit, cucumbers and hummus, crackers and cheese or string cheese, there is a veggie jerkey that is really good and low cal, carb and 10gms pro. I get that sometimes. Peanut butter with chocolate chips is my very fav snack... but portion control is the key... I tend to measure out just a little more... which turns into a little bit more, then its really two servings. The single thing that keeps me slightly on track is making sure I write it all down... even when its not pretty. If i go through a spell away from the computer for days, the weight goes up.

    Back On Track Thread

Hello all! It has been about a year since I have checked in on this site. I will be 2 years out in december. I still would like to lose another 30 pounds. The lowest I have gotten so far was 165. I currently flucuate between 165 and 170. I have totally gotten off track! Bad! I snack, eat carbs, drink alcohol, eat sweets. All of the things I shouldn't do! I really need to get focused again! It is so hard though. I guess the first thing was just logging on, finding this thread and reading what everyone else has been dealing with. I am comitted to starting again and being healthy. I have planned my meas out for tomorrow and my boyfriend and I have an appointment for a kickboxing class! Meals: Breakfast: coffee (need the caffeine but will be working working on having less), babybell cheese and a hardboiled egg. Lunch: Vegetarian chili 1/2 cup and babybell cheese Dinner: 1/2 baked potato and 1/2 cup of veggie chili Its a start. I know its not exactly what I should be eating but I need to start somewhere! Please help me stay on track! I can do this!

    Vegetarian/Vegan After Sleeve

Absolutely. I've been a vegetarian for about 30 years. I've lost track of exactly how long. Wasn't an issue pre-sleeve and hasn't been an issue post-sleeve.

What happens if you don't get enough protein?

Thank you for your post Christinamo7. Been doing a little digging since my post. Looks like the FDA recommends 50 mg per day as the general rule. However, my nutritionist says to aim for 80 grams a day, which is consistent with what I read. Have an appointment with my nutritionist Monday. Wondering what the numbers are and if a Protein intake between 50 - 80 grams half the time is really a problem. Have to wonder if we are told to aim high in hopes that we hit the lower mark or do we need more protein than non VSG people. Any vegetarians out there who can shed a little light?
  14. Okay, so we all probably started off with a similar WLS diet post-op. It started with the liquid diet, then moved to pureed foods, semi-soft foods, and solid foods. The focus in each phase was on Protein, plus getting fluids and making healthy choices like eating veggies and choosing whole instead of refined grains. But there’s plenty of room to customize a diet beyond eggs for Breakfast, tuna for lunch, and chicken for dinner. Plus, I know a lot of WLS patients turn to (or stay on) vegetarian, vegan, Paleo, or other special diets. Do you follow a special diet beyond the high-protein, low-calorie WLS diet? Do you go low-carb, or gluten-free, or organic, or anything else in particular? Which foods do you make sure to eat or avoid, and why? And are there any special considerations in your diet or tips you have? For example, how do you get enough protein if you follow a vegan diet? Bonus points for sharing fun recipes!

Travelling at 6 weeks post op - need tips

There will be at least one obligatory business dinner. To make things more difficult, I am vegetarian so I can't just order grilled chicken. I may have to feign not feeling well to get out of it The social drinking is a very good point. I didn't drink much before so I was used to turning down drinks already. I should be in soft food stage when I travel. Are protein bars OK? Figure I can pack those and use them as a back up if I can't find things on menu.
  16. I choose the sleeve because: I wanted a slower weight loss I didn't want to reroute with bypass Lap band didn't seem like a good fit my BMI I was told it might alleviate some of my other chronic conditions I'm vegetarian with multiple food & medicine allergies. I thought a malabsorptive procedure would be too limiting
  17. My doctor has set me up with a nutritionist and I'm on a very strict diet. I'm not saying you should follow it exactly if you don't feel like it's right for you but take into consideration maybe? My diet is very similar to atkins which I had done in the past. I do not eat any: bread Pasta rice potatoes fruit sugar artificial sweetener or any drinks other than coffee, tea, fat free milk and Water. When I drink coffee I get something flavored and use fat free or low fat half and half or creamer and whichever is lower in calories. When i drink tea I get the unsweetened. Now I do my best to follow this diet but it is very strict and pretty damned hard to follow so for instance the creamer in my coffee although better for me than something that's flavored and amazing, it still has a little sugar in it. for breakfast most days I have a morning star vegetable patty. That brand has many to choose from like garden vegetable (so good and loaded with things like olives, bell peppers, water chestnuts and carrot), chicken patties (vegetarian), and even sausage patties. all of them are full of Protein and taste great, seriously =) for lunch I have something like chicken salad that I make with canned chicken (also full of protein) fat free italian dressing, a teensy bit of olive oil mayo, small chunks of swiss cheese and quartered cherry or grape tomatoes. I need a fill so lately I've been having a snack between lunch and dinner although I probably shouldn't =( but I bring a string cheese and one bread and butter pickle spear. it's roughly 100 calories for that. for dinner I try to stick with just meat and vegetables. Grilled chicken and carrots or broccoli or brussel sprouts. I stay away from ground beef since I looked at the package and saw that 4 oz is like 340 calories all by itself and I'm only supposed to have 300 calories a meal and 100 calories toward a drink (milk) or my snack. So 900 to 1000 calories a day. I don't know if any of that will help you at all but it has helped me. I have had a plateau of about 4 months when I could not afford a fill, but I didn't gain and I'm back on track and losing slowly with the insanity work outs and eating better than I did.
  18. There are a couple of vegan vegetarian forums on here. Give it a search. I highly recommend speak with your NUT before making changes.

What supplements do you all take?

How to Build Bone Density Engage in regular, weight-bearing exercise to increase bone strength and density. Activities such as stair climbing, walking, jogging, weight lifting and tennis require your muscles to work against gravity. According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, engaging in these activities for 30 minutes, three or more times each week, can help prevent bone loss and increase bone strength Eat a diet high in calcium, regardless of your age. Peak bone mass is obtained during the 30s, which means even young women must take steps to protect their bones. Calcium-rich foods include milk, yogurt, canned fish with bones, cheese and dark green leafy vegetables, according to the University of Arizona. Include foods in your diet containing Vitamin D, such as egg yolks, liver, saltwater fish and fortified milk. The current recommended daily amount of vitamin D is between 400 and 800 IU, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health. Spend 15 minutes each day in the sun. This small amount of sun exposure is not enough to cause negative effects, but is sufficient in most cases to increase your body's level of vitamin D. Supplement with calcium, vitamin D, and magnesium if your dietary sources of these important minerals are insufficient. If you are on a restricted diet due to allergies or lactose intolerance, are vegetarian,or have been diagnosed with other health conditions, you should speak with your doctor about undergoing blood work to test your levels of these nutrients. Take medications to increase bone density if you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia. A diagnosis of osteopenia is given when bone density is subnormal, but is not yet reduced enough for a diagnosis of osteoporosis. A number of medications have been approved by the FDA to prevent or treat osteoporosis, including bisphosphonates, calcitonin, raloxifene, teriparatide, and estrogens. Have your hormone levels checked if you are a post-menopausal woman. Loss of estrogen following menopause reduces bone density and increases bone loss. Hormone replacement therapy might help rebuild bone mass, according to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. 20. Calories In, Calories Out. It's sort of the traditional view of weight management -- eat more than you burn and you gain weight, burn more than you eat and you lose weight. If you look at it this way, it doesn't matter what the calories are (protein, fat, carbs, meat, vegetarian, organic, GMO, etc.), just how many you're eating vs. burning.

    Has Anyone Read "Skinny B--ch"

I got it at waldenbooks. They have a deal where you can get the cookbook 1/2 price when you buy both. The book is about healthy eating. They claim people are fat because we are unhealthy because of all the nasty stuff in our food. They tout a vegetarian diet with no dairy. The book is an easy read and quite informative. However, if you are offended by cussing, watch out. The book reads like you are talking to your foul-mouthed smarta** girlfriend. I've been considering becoming a vegetarian for many years and i have made some changes, but this book is really pushing me to do it.
  22. You know I used to hate meat before the sleeve too. Much happier as a vegetarian. It's part of why I create recipes that I post on the blog. What I'm finding is that if I spice the meat well so it doesn't taste like meat, I do better I have also learned that the longer I keep eating it, my taste buds are re-setting and now when I'm hungry, that's what I crave.

    Were Your Eyes Wide Open?

You can't be prepared 100%.You will learn new things and struggle with others. How I handled the social eating thing was/is: I tell myself over and over again.. "I am here for the company, not the food." It just makes things a lot easier. I usually do eat, find something I can have... I am a vegetarian, so there are usually not that many things that really make up a protein first meal for me at most restaurants.. so I have protein ahead of time, or after, and just have a little bit of something I want and enjoy the company.

    Garden Of Life

Not true! My son's girlfriend is a nutritionist with a PHd and an MS in sports medicine...hardly lazy! She's also a vegetarian. She does say that it's possible to be vegan as a gastric bypass patient, albeit difficult, especially in the first six months. She disagrees with you about whey isolate, and says it's the most complete choice for most patients. I would prefer soy, but it is not a good choice for rny patients with thyroid issues. I applaud you for your commitment to a vegan, organic lifestyle, and hope you have success post op.

    Garden Of Life

I just ordered my first container of Garden of Life Protein powder. As indicated by some comments here, not everyone realizes you can get all your protein needs met on a vegan or vegetarian diet -- CandyCrush is talking about a vegan Protein Powder, after all, not just powdered vegies. I have made the decision to transition off all meat and fish -- the fish is all full of radiation anyway after Fukushima -- and, well, just for me personally, now that India and Russia have declared Dolphins to be non-human persons, I decided I can no longer justify eating animals. But lasting change is, for me, anyway, incremental change so I am not going cold vegie. I decided to start with one pound of vegan Garden of Life protein powder. Right now, I use 100% organic whey, unflavored, which allows me to create any flavor I want. I use only organic ingredients. I add cinnamon, ginger, tumeric to all shakes -- good nutrition. I often do chocolate shakes. Chocolate is actually highly nutritious when you don't add sugar to it. I use organic stevia to sweeten. I use frozen fruit to give shakes creamy texture -- half a frozen banana does wonders. ANd I often use unsweetened coconut milk which yums up anything. Somd prefer almond milk -- I am a cocomilk gal and I actually make my own cause all commercial coconut milk, even the oragnic ones, have a known carcinogen as an ingredient: carrageenan, a harmless-sounding seaweed that has been known to cause cancer for over 30 years but our FDA allows it added to all kinds of food, including organic. I basically don't eat any processed food anymore cause food processors slip in all kinds of stuff to stretch out the real food and expand their profits at the expense of my health. I do buy protein powder, which is processed, but only 100% certified organic. To folks using whey, don't use whey isolate. The process to make isolate basically denudes the whey of its nutrients, making the product cheaper for the manufacturer but you think you are buying healthy only you aren't. Make sure if you do whey it is only organic and WHOLE whey -- no isolate. And no chemical Vitamins added. Get your vitamins on your own, don't pay more for denuded protein powder at GNC just cause they slick package it as a positive feature. Most added vitamins are just bad chemicals for your body.
