    Weight loss stall

@Robert-J Please listen to your doctor, not people on the internet. If your doctor said to eat more calories, don't eat fewer just because @LilaNicole20 who is not a bariatric surgeon or nutritionist thinks it's a good idea. I am sure it's very frustrating, but give it time. The weight didn't come on overnight and you won't lose it overnight either. Keep checking in with your surgeon, dietician, and therapist, and try meeting with an obesity medicine specialist if the surgeon thinks that would help (I was very hungry after surgery so the obesity medicine specialist put me on metformin and topamax, which have helped). People have varied results and some people lose faster than others.

    Pre Op Jitters...

It really is. A lot of people on here have benefitted from seeing a bariatric therapist for similar issues. I just don’t have any near me. I am managing though it’s just not easy.

    May 2022 Surgeries

I'm on day 4 of my pre-op diet too but my RNY surgery is scheduled for this Thursday. It's so interesting to see how everyone has different requirements before surgery. I'm struggling today with drinking my shakes. The vanilla bariatric advantage just doesn't does good after 4 days and 4 shakes per day.
  4. Initial appointments today! Meeting with my Bariatric surgeon at 10:30 am, appointments with the dietician and exercise specialist after!!!! I’m so anxious, excited, nervous. Ready to do this, been waiting a long time. The health issues have piled on as of late and my weight keeps climbing. Starting weight today of 284.2 pounds, height 5’1” and BMI 53.7.
  5. So I have done a lot of research into making sure which surgery is right for me and my surgery consult is finally June 3rd. I have already turned in the mound of paperwork they wanted from me and the medical release forms, met with the Bariatric Nutritionist for an evaluation, my Bariatric Psychiatric Evaluation is scheduled May 26th, and I already did the seminar required. Plus since I have tried for many, many years to lose weight I have everything cataloged for my weightloss journey in my carb manager app that I used to keep track of meals, weight, carbs, calories, protein, and fat. My question is how long after the consult do they schedule your surgery or do they set it up before you leave the office to give you a goal to work for?
  6. Some bariatric surgery centers host clothing swaps. Mine doesn’t unfortunately but I have heard of some that do.
  7. You know I've been going though clothes sizes pretty fast. It would be cool if there was a place for bariatric patients to share and swap clothes. Just because we go through sizes so fast. That way we didn't have to buy clothes in a size we only be in for a few weeks or months. Sent from my SM-A716U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Does flavored coffee have calories?

Probably does. not much tho. I did buy these ice coffee ones from bariatric pal and they are delicious. Each packet has 120 calories.
  9. I was able to get some warm ramen beef seasoning down 8ozs worth, easier than other beef broths surprisingly. Alot of sodium but I think at the minute I need it. I look pale and feel weakly. I dont think Im dehydrating I think my body is trying to figure out what the hell is going on lol. I started my bariatric multi vitamin and calcium today hoping that will help as well. I feel good, no swelling or inflammation at all. I dont feel tired but I am still taking it easy as not alot of calories going in and I dont want to expel the small amount I have to quickly.

    Psychology appt anxious

I was super nervous as well. The psychologist asked me questions about being overweight, how long have I struggled with my weight, what are my eating patterns, and what is my activity level. Then he asked me about bariatric surgery, why I think it’s a good option, what kind of support system do I have at home and what are my expectations and goals. I took the MMPI test and a psychological evaluation exam online about a week later. Then I met with the psychologist a second time to discuss my test results. Then he approved me for surgery at the end of the appointment.

keep postponing to start my preop liquid diet.

The length depends on your BMI. Some people can do 1 week. While others like myself needed 2 weeks. Worst thing that can happen is you get in that operating room and they open you up and end up closing you back up without doing anything because the liver was too big. I did 2 weeks. Yea its hard at first but after 3-4 days it gets easier. and as for coffee. While every surgeon is different. I was specifically told not to give up coffee during this time. that the pre op diet would be hard enough. I was free to drink coffee tho they said to use sugar free creamer. Also ask your bariatric team. While mine was liquid. They did say if i was struggling too much i could have 1 small meal a day of lean meats like chicken/fish 2-3oz and 2-3oz of certain veggies. (I did Sockeye salmon and asparagus)

    May 2022 surgery?

My surgery is May 12th. I’m on day 2 of my pre-op diet, I’m allowed to have 4 of my bariatric advantage shakes per day, clear liquids, and 2cups of veggies a day. Today I’m having muscle cramps from peeing so much! I’m getting really excited for my procedure. I’m 5’9 and weigh 300lbs.

    June 2022 surgery buddies

We are surgery date twins!. I'm in Oregon! I'm very nervous about the diet changes and my bodies reaction to foods after the surgery. I'm the type of person that researches everything, so I purchased The High-Protein Bariatric Cookbook by Staci Gulbin. Reading it has helped me feel a bit more prepared but I know not much will mentally prepare me.

    Renew bariatrics in Mexico

I am still looking into places in Tijuana, I have mixed feelings about renew because the people who answer the phones are not really competent and are nor the best at coordinating. Right now I am looking into Dr. Illian, I am considering either the mini bypass or the full bypass. I am a VSG revision patient. Are you a first time patient, looking into the VSG? Post-Surgery Infrared Sauna?

I had to look this up because I'd never heard of it. The problem is, you're going to sweat, which is going to lead to dehydration, big time! You can't drink easily right after surgery, and it's very easy to get dehydrated even if you're just sitting around at home. It's the number 1 cause for re-admission after bariatric surgery. I would be very wary of doing this until I was SURE I was getting plenty of liquids in.

scared...what will happen when I'm an old lady??

My bariatric center recommends three meals per day and one or two snacks if needed, and strongly suggest that we do not graze between meals and or snacks. The early days and weeks post op are the only time we have to sip constantly, due to swelling in our stomachs/pouches it just can't accept more than an ounce or two at a time. One of the reasons weight loss surgery is so liberating is because (once fully healed and eating solids) we establish a normal routine with food, the only difference is we eat less than non-wls folks. The whole idea is for life to normalize and not be a slave to food any longer. Best wishes!

    May 2022 surgery?

This doesn't make any sense. If it's BMI based, then those who have higher BMIs would have liquid diets but you contradicted that statement. My surgeon stated it's based on preference and also where you are having the surgery. My surgeon is performing my surgery in a Circle of Excellence (COE) hospital that requires the two week liquid diet because it has shown better outcomes, reduced surgery time, and less complications. Another hospital system that has their own bariatric program in my state does a one week liquid diet after a week of low calorie, low carb meals with lean protein. Like any other medical procedure, the pre-op isn't always a one size fits all.
  18. I'm not doubling up on any vitamins - all I take is one bariatric multivitamin every day. I know iron can be an issue, but pre-surgery I used to take the same amount of iron by itself because I wanted to be able to donate platelets (I have stopped donating due to lack of time). Our surgery center said no patches and no gummies. I will talk to them about going off the multivitamins.

    Exhausted....

I'm not sure, but a bariatric surgeon may require your heart to be healthier before clearing you for surgery.
  20. After waiting for what seemed like forever, more weight gain, and health scared due to my weight, I finally officially have my initial consults with my Bariatric surgeon team on Monday!!!!

  22. What a journey it has been lately. I’ve gained nearly ten pounds in two weeks...slowly creeping up to a number I fear. At 5’1” I’m now 272 pounds, BMI 52.4. I originally was diagnosed with multiple right upper lobe PEs on 4/16. I was not originally admitted, just sent home on Xarelto. Fast forward to last week, I was admitted for a few days on the cardiology floor for a work up due to a return of symptoms. No new clots, but was diagnosed with Right Ventricle enlargement and Pulmonary Hypertension via a right heart cath. Got discharged, saw pulmonology yesterday, did a walk test, scheduled to come back for PFTs. Last night was feeling worse, high Hr and BP, severe headache, re admitted. Had some basic labs and tests today, they felt comfortable discharging me. Got home an hour ago, started feeling short of breath, dizzy, nauseous again. Checked BP and it’s really high. Going to rest a bit and re check. Don’t want to end up back in the hospital. So exhausted...sick of my weight slowly killing me. I have my initial consults with my Bariatric Surgeon, nutritionist and exercise specialist on Monday (it just got scheduled today) so there’s the beginning of a light, but I’m exhausted. Please pray my BP comes down and I don’t end up back at the hospital.

  24. The problem with traditional dieting is that after you've lost weight, your body literally fights you to the death to put it back on. This has been scientifically proven. I'm sure this has something to do with the fact that humans have evolved to survive in a feast and famine environment throughout 99% of our history. Nowadays, the feast never ends. This is a relatively new phenomenon, and our bodies haven't had time to catch up yet from an evolutionary perspective. It's the reason why the lasting success rates of programs like Weight Watchers, etc are incredibly low. I believe the weight gain relapse odds plummet after two years of keeping the weight off. Most people don't have that much willpower. The only program besides surgery that I've seen truly work is Overeaters Anonymous, and that's for the people who truly work it. This generally means meetings multiple times a week, step work with a sponsor, service work, etc. It's a complete psychological and lifestyle change. Give it another shot if you want, but one thing I'd say is to trust your track record rather than your emotions. It sounds like you've been dieting on and off forever. What'll make this time any different? If nothing changes, nothing changes. I don't think anyone here wanted to have surgery. We did it because we were at our wits end. As for the people in your life who're telling you not to do it, ask yourself how much they really know about it. Like I used to, they probably think it's only for people big enough to be on TLC, super drastic, etc. It's really not, and frankly, I don't think anyone really needs a football sized stomach that produces tons of ghrelin in this day in age. It sounds like you've done a lot of research on the matter. You have a well-informed opinion, which means that you can disregard ones that aren't well-informed. A calculus student probably wouldn't take an algebra student seriously if the algebra student looked over his work and told him that it was all wrong. Btw, staying obese is generally far riskier than bariatric surgery. Diabetes, clogged arteries, high blood pressure, etc versus some very minor surgery risks. I don't know what your personal health situation is, so take what I just said with a grain of salt, but if a decent surgeon looks you over and says you're good to go, you're probably good to go.
  25. Having bariatric surgery is not "the easy way out"... it's really the only proven treatment for obesity. One surgeon told me that if you have more than 100 lbs to lose, the odd of losing it and keeping it off are 1 in 2000! I had lost 50, 80, 100 lbs various times and always gained it back. Yes, I might gain my weight back this time, but the odds are much better since I had surgery. You can try to lose that 85 lbs but even if you do, you will almost certainly gain it back, and based on your history, you will end up heavier than ever. However, in order to keep the weight off after surgery, you will have to make permanent changes to your eating habits. For example, I'm 8 months out and I can eat anything I want... which means it's up to me to choose the best options. Right now, I'm limited in how much I can eat as long as I eat protein rich foods, but if I'm eating cookies, I can eat too much too easily. I had sleeve, not bypass, but the outcome/recovery is basically the same. You just have to be more careful with vitamins after bypass. I don't feel that I'm "missing" 90% of my stomach, but eating definitely feels different, and that can be frustrating sometimes. However, I am happy I did the surgery.
