    Day 3 Post Sadi-S

OK, so today, I had a scrambled egg for breakfast with a teaspoon of reduced fat cheddar. Lunch was 2 thin slices of deli ham and an ounce of havarti cheese. I only ate a little bit of the ham because I'm just not a lunch meat person. I ate the cheese. I had a Greek yogurt as a snack later. Dinner was Ahi Tuna and a mix of potatoes, squash and carrots. I ate 2 ounces of tuna and a couple bites of carrots and squash and a bite of potatoes. Most days I have either an egg or yogurt for breakfast, a tuna pouch for lunch, and dinner is usually fish and a veggie. I can hardly ever get to the veggies. Tonight was unusual, but I really love squash and carrots and I think I overate and ate too fast because I felt too full. I'm still learning this new anatomy. I am still having trouble getting enough protein since I can't eat much, so I usually have a Fair Life Core protein shake a couple hours after dinner. I will say I'm experiencing what I think is hunger, but it great that it takes so little to satisfy it! I used to get hangry and I'd always eat til I was stuffed. It's a miracle to me to eat so little and be satisfied! Sent from my moto g(6) using BariatricPal mobile app
  2. I am 2 weeks out from a MGB and I still have am not hungry at all. Today I did get a yogurt down and one Protein Shake, which I am over those. How long was it before you wanted to eat or felt like you wanted to eat.

    Portioning out food

depends on what it is. Something like yogurt, I measure. Meat - I weigh. I'm thinking the more solid something is, weighing is probably more accurate.
  4. I make chicken salad - some mayo or yogurt, and I add fresh halved grapes. Great to take to the office for lunch. I also make Chinese chicken salad - bottled low fat asian dressing, greens of your choice ( I like spring greens ) diced chicken, diced water chestnuts (very crunchy and low calorie) tablespoon of sliced roasted almonds, chopped green or red onion and you have a lovely restaurant quality salad ! Or I might make riced cauliflower - steam it a bit then toss in a pan with other sautéed vegetables and add diced chicken at the end to heat it up with the rest - sautéed in teriyaki or low sodium soy sauce with a bit of oil so it doesn't stick - or instead of asian sautée in just a bit of oil and add hot sauce and make it Mexican and serve like a tostada with salsa.
  5. Welcome, Chelle. I will first say that I did feel pretty good before surgery, although my labwork suggested otherwise. I had been obese for so long that I guess I didn't know better. Once I lost all the weight, I realized how "good" really feels! In answer to your questions: Taking meds: I did have to crush them for a couple of months and it is disgusting. Unfortunately, that's part of the process. I found that the quickest and easiest way was to simply put the powder on my tongue and wash it down with water. (I tried them in liquid, in yogurt, etc.--even worse.). After trying various multivitamins, I found that "soft chews" worked best for me. Even the so-called "chewables" in hard form made me gag. Water: It is indeed very difficult to get the full amount of water at the beginning, but it gets better over time. Bear in mind that protein shakes can count as part of the liquid requirement. Just do the best you can. I had a bottle of water with me all day long and took sips as often as I could. Liquid and puree stages: Yep, they are boring. I found, however, that I had no appetite whatsoever and had to force myself to get enough protein every day, so I didn't really care what things tasted like. If you mean "bland" as in not spicy, that is probably best in the beginning. I ate lots of non-fat Greek yogurt at the beginning, and I got really sick of protein shakes. Again, it's all part of the process and you will get through it. I've never heard of anyone having to "start over" after eating the wrong things during the puree stage. Some people talk about a "pouch re-set" when they stop losing weight, but that's more psychological than an actual physical issue. Good luck! I promise that you will look back in six months and wonder why you hadn't done this sooner!

    800 calories

I’m three weeks out from surgery and I continue to be amazed by the fact that I truly feel no hunger and have no cravings. At this point, I’m averaging 300-400 calories per day max and, although I know it’s hard to believe, I feel fantastic! As someone who has dieted on and off for the past 25 years, I know the misery that comes with starvation. What I’m experiencing now is NOTHING like what I’ve been through in the past. For example, I just ate just 2 oz of tuna mixed with Greek yogurt, and I’m full and feel totally satisfied! I don’t feel stuffed but I absolutely could not eat another bite. The gastric sleeve does all sorts of amazing things to all the hormones that cause the sensations we all fear, and for me has been a godsend.
  8. I get over 100 grams in every day. It's not that hard if you focus on protein first and have protein at every meal. I'll usually have Greek yogurt in some form for breakfast, often a protein shake as a mid-morning snack, something like cottage cheese or a couple of chicken skewers for lunch, some other kind of protein as a mid-afternoon snack (a couple of baby bell cheese things, or light & fit yogurt), then usually meat and vegetables for dinner (I really don't need the mid-morning protein shake to get over 100 - but it guarantees that I do, and then I don't have to think about getting in all my protein for the rest of the day - by adding a shake, I know I'll be over 100 by the end of the day. Plus, I'm one of those who happens to like protein shakes...)
  9. I'm six days post-op and I think I finally turned a corner. While the pain from the "big" incision still hurts pretty bad, it has become tolerable. The gas/bloating seems to be subsiding, and the cramping I had after swallowing seems to be going away (though not completely - it's just not as bad and less frequent, but still super painful when it does happen). I also haven't had a normal BM, but I have been "productive", which I guess is better than what I've read some of you have gone thru. In other words, no constipation! So, I guess my question now is, when does this damn weight start disappearing??? LOL!!! I'm still having a bit of trouble getting all my fluids in (up to about 40oz. water, one 11oz. protein shake and various SF popsicles, pudding, yogurt, soup, etc.), and have zero appetite. That said, while I'm not the least bit hungry, I'm starting to crave the taste of certain things. Now it's like my tastebuds are on extra high alert! Is this normal? Does it go away? I've never had food issues before and I hope this doesn't trigger something. Anyway, now that I'm feeling better, I'm looking forward to LOOKING better! Almost everything I've read, either a post or an article says the weight will literally start "falling off". I really hope that's true. I've come this far, and I can't even imagine this not working. I'm still 1# heavier than I was the day of surgery, so I'm chalking that up to the last bit of air and fluids they pumped into me. 🤞 The weather here is supposed to be super hot & humid all week, so I don't know how much walking I'll get in, but I plan to be up & about around the house...doing housework or whatever else I can to keep active. Thank you all SO MUCH for all the kind and supportive words. It really does mean a lot! 🤗 P.S. Downside of pain meds... Norco makes me HYPER (as opposed to sleepy or loopy). It's now 1:00am CT and I'm wide-the-flip awake... 4 hours past my bedtime! Argh!
  10. I was told 1/2 cup at a time. If it's something like yogurt, I can eat a whole half cup, but most other food I can eat 2 to 3 ounces at a time. I'm on week 5 and I can eat about 2 ounces of fish, or about 3 shrimp. I love veggies but I usually and full by the time I get to them. I am supposed to have 3 meals and one snack a day. Sent from my moto g(6) using BariatricPal mobile app
  11. Wow - we're almost surgery twins! (Mine was 8/19.) I'm glad to know this is mostly normal. I thought about the yogurt, pudding & Jell-o being too much, but it's on my list an encouraged in order to get calories in and promote digestion. I'm sure those fudgesicles tasted heavenly! I sent a note to my Dr.'s team last night (hoping they'd see it first thing this morning & reply ASAP) but I haven't heard from them yet. Tylenol does NOTHING for any type of pain and that's all I'm on at this point. Also, the bloating, distension and all-around discomfort are getting old fast. I understand needing time to recover, but I've had a c-section, breast reduction, a tumor removed from the base of my brain, and other "minor" surgeries, yet I don't recall any of the recoveries being this drawn-out or uncomfortable. As for the , today was a beautiful day! LOL! Not quite a full-on BM, but enough that I got A LOT of relief. Hope it happens soon for you too!!!

Help! Ate too much! Pain in the middle.

Hi everyone. Just saw the Bariatric program nurse and we were troubleshooting what happened. She feels that even light mayo is too much fat to tolerate at the purée stage for some. She recommended using fat free plain yogurt instead. We discussed how not having good coping mechanisms for stress led me to seek out pleasure from food and take in more then was appropriate. I’ve had stress with my mother, my daughter and my dog this past week and my normal way to deal is to devour something rich and put myself in a food coma. Because I tried to use my old method with my teeny stomach pouch I caused a bolus of food to get stuck. In some ways I wonder if I did this so I could get everyone to get off my back this week. Not consciously but maybe a self sabotage so everyone would have to fend for themselves. I see it now but I didn’t see it then. I’ve got to stay self-aware while eating. This was too traumatic of an experience to repeat.

    Day 3 Post-op...still a lot of pain

Thank you. It was a terrible experience. I never reacted to anesthesia like that before and I hope I never do again. Could it be the yogurt and pudding is too much for you right now? I’m on clear liquids only at the moment. Herbal tea has been a life saver for me during this time. Broth has been good for me as well. I’m having a hard time tolerating the protein clear drinks unless I dilute it with water. I hope you start to feel better soon. This recovery is no joke.
  14. I'm so sorry that you kept getting sick in the hospital. 😞 Thankfully, I haven't had any issues with nausea or vomiting, but I do constantly feel full, making it difficult to get all my fluids in. Plus, I get this horrible pain when the liquid/food (yogurt, pudding, etc.) hits my sleeve. It's like a terrible cramp or spasm that lasts a few seconds, then passes, but it's BAD when it happens. I haven't tried a heating pad yet, but I just took the last dose of my pain meds, so I sent a note to the dr. requesting a refill. I tried to go a day without them, but I could hardly stand up. With them, I can get up and walk around without issue. Hope you feel better soon!

    Weight Gain Post VSG

ice cream is a slider food - it melts quickly in your stomach and goes right through - and it's full of calories to boot. If you're still feeling restriction after "regular food", you haven't killed your sleeve (and I'd be surprised if you'd "killed" it in the first place!). you'll have to try to get back to what you were eating before the pandemic started....focus on protein first, track everything that goes into your mouth - you know the drill. If you feel a binge attack coming on, get out of the house - or if that's not possible, be sure you have lots of safe stuff around, like raw veggies (you can even make a dip for them out of plain Greek yogurt if you want - I stir in or season it with different things), SF Jello, SF popsicles, lots of fun zero or ultra-low calorie beverages, maybe some grapes.... your surgeon will not be mad. They've seen this before - and probably moreso than usual with the pandemic going on. edited to add that sometimes when I'm starting to binge, I'll have a big bowl of something like All Bran or Trader Joe's High Fiber Cereal. They're super filling because of all the fiber (but you may want to start with a more manageable amount if you're not used to a huge fiber intake, though -- or you may be sorry a few hours later!)

    Favorite Grocery Products

Siggi's yogurt, especially the vanilla and cinnamon and pumpkin spice. 15 grams of protein! and it satisfies my desire for "a little something sweet." Kibo's chips (I get mine on Amazon). 7 grams of protein; I bring them for lunch frequently to eat with tuna salad or chicken salad instead of any bread. I usually eat 1/2 the bag at lunch, and then save half for a mid day pick me up, with a piece of fruit.

    Surgery done today

Day 13-14 moving on to Purée diet. Encountered some difficulties with purée. I mixed up some canned crab with light mayo and yogurt and I apparently did not soften it enough. It got stuck in my esophagus and I got a bad series of spasms in the area between the breast and at the top of the stomach. I’m still feeling tender hours later but my vital signs are normal. I don’t think I did any permanent damage but I plan to step back to full liquids or maybe even clear Liquids tomorrow. So that is a very important lesson learned. Purée must be very wet and loose at first. I’m also eating too fast. I got overconfident with the way full liquids went down. Other than that I’m walking twice a day for about twenty minutes each session. I feel a little depressed today but hopefully tomorrow will be better.

    How often to eat?

What kinds of things are you eating? When I started the pureed food stage, I was eating 2 ounces at a time, consisting of triple zero yogurt + protein powder, sugar-free pudding + protein powder, pureed refried beans + protein powder, unsweetened applesauce + protein powder, or cottage cheese. I have been eating three "meals" per day plus liquids (protein drinks, sugar-free popsicles, sugar-free Jello, protein soups, etc.) in between. Are you tracking what you eat? I track everything in MyFitnessPal and I average around 400 calories per day. I don't really feel full when I eat, but I don't feel hungry, either (haven't felt hungry since the surgery). I just measure out 2 ounces and eat it, and don't feel much different before and after the meal. I'm 5 weeks out and on the "soft food" stage, but I'm still mostly eating pureed foods and ricotta bake (definitely the best thing I've eaten since surgery and now my go-to dinner; I split the recipe into 8 portions and that's dinner for over a week). I just recently started adding half an ounce of canned chicken to my refried beans and ricotta bake meals.

    How often to eat?

When I was at the purée stage ... I barely took in 300 calories. I at non fat Greek yogurt, bone broth , sugar free pops, jello and protein shakes.
  20. First banned in 8/2008 @ 385 lbs went well, lost 100 lbs,,,,after 4 yrs blow it out with major slip from stress etc,,,,,removed waited and replaced in 2014,,,,,regained of course. Started over and was so scared of another slip I didn't have regular fills. Managed to get down to 350 with only one fill post op. Finally went back and had fill under fluoroscope last month 7/2020 and looked good, filled from 5 to 5.1. Felt no difference so just added 1 cc more Aug 2020 and man I am restricted. I don't remember filling this way after a fill. I drank the water in the office and seems ok but really should have just got .5 cc but wanted some restriction, I feel full all the time and water goes down slow, if I eat soft things it does go down but feels like it's still in the band. It's been 4 days and just now on soft food, yogurt, soups etc... Should I go back or just wait a little longer,,,I just can't remember if it takes a while after a fill to not be belching and slimming all day long. Believe I have the 14 band and think I maxed out at 7 cc yrs ago.

    Day2 after surgery.

Wow, I didn't get yogurt until a week out! Looks like you're doing great. I'm sure they're pumping you full of IV fluids, which will help make up for lower fluid intake the first few days. Welcome to the other side!

    Anyone for August 2020

I just wanted to update for those who are headed to surgery soon. I am one week and a day since sleeve surgery and I’m pretty much feeling 100%. I didn’t really ever have pain from the wounds. I did experience gas, I wouldn’t call it pain but it was very uncomfortable. It lasted about 24 hours and got better with walking. I had minor pain when I left the hospital but Im a single mom with a one year old and it was hard not to pick him up. I had to lift him onto the changing table, give him baths, etc you know regular mom stuff. That pain subsided pretty quickly too and I didn’t have to use pain meds much. Being on liquids again for another 2 weeks is the worst part but it’s not unbearable. It was difficult for me to get a protein shake down this first week. They just felt heavy and sweet and weren’t setting right but I kept trying different ones and found ones that I could tolerate. Protein water has been a life saver. I found some sipping soups yesterday that have been helping me feel more satisfied. I also talked to my surgeon’s office and they told me I could try some Greek yogurt and that went well today. I went back to work day 6. I’m a teacher and all my student are virtual for now so I’m basically just sitting in front of a computer all day. I was feeling really tired like I needed a nap midday and then super exhausted when I got home from work but not today. Today I felt great. You feel better every day. I’m just so excited to start seeing results. I have lost 11 lbs since surgery.

    Water

I was a big water drinker before surgery but I have struggled ever since. I don’t know why but think it may have to do with being a water guzzler before & now I struggle to have more than a mouthful at a time. I keep water beside my bed, in the car, in my living room so it’s always on hand. I try to keep my fluid levels up by drinking green tea (have done so for years), eating high water content foods like lettuce, fruit (watermelon is great), drinking yogurt, eating milky porridge, etc. Of course it’s not easy to measure your fluids accurately this way but as long as your urine is at least pale lemon in colour & you pee often, you should be ok.

egg? chicken? beef? pork? fish? beans? cheese? yogurt? milk?.. you're gonna need to be a lot more specific.

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

Today is 6 weeks post-op. I'm down 4lbs from last week, which felt good since it felt like I might have been starting a stall. Still on my doctor's fairly restrictive diet. So far for normal foods I've only done scrambled eggs and pureed chicken salad with hummus and greek yogurt instead of mayo. Both went down with no problem. This will be the second week of me mixing in regular food twice in the week. Next week I'll go to three times a week, barring any issues. Exercise has continued to be a chore due to the heat, but things are cooling down this week, so looking to increase my activity some more. Yesterday was very difficult for me. I ended up receiving some really lousy news that completely devastated me mentally and emotionally. My usual routine would have been to indulge in some comfort food. Except that isn't possible now. Which is definitely for the best, but it really didn't help my mood or mental state any. Still feeling upset today and just trying to get through it.
