Wait...shouldn't Calories Per Day For Weight Loss Still Work The Same As Pre-Op?
Lissa replied to jewelwithin's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First of all, muscle weighs more than fat, so you may actually be building muscle. Secondly, your body is still pushing out fluids from surgery. Third, you may still be in the 3 week stall. Mine lasted about 2 weeks. It's not something you can change. Your body needs time to adjust to having a smaller stomach and to the reduced amount you're eating. Fourth, if you're anywhere near TOM, you may be holding Water. No matter which one of the above is the cause, you'll probably see a whoosh in a few days where you lose a few pounds really quickly. But, right now, your body is shrinking, so you may notice the difference in your clothes before you see it on the scale. Good luck!! -
How Much Did You Lose In Month 1
LoserMama replied to Mrs.Prisses's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Holy crap I'd be thrilled to have lost as much as you. I was sleeved 12/21, and post op I've lost about 17 pounds and I've been stalled here for about a week (guess that is the lovely 3 week stall) but hey, I'm 4 weeks now, so can we move on? -
Out 12 Days....,,frustrated!
Lissa replied to Kthump's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Kthump, Search for 3 week stall, although it sounds like yours may be starting a little early. Especially if you lost a good bit of weight on the pre-op diet, the stall kicks in and you may not lose anything for several days. It is normal, natural, and it will pass. Theories abound, but I think it's our body's way of readjusting to all the changes after surgery. You have gone from eating whatever you like to barely putting any calories in and your body says "Whoa!" The weight loss will resume, but this is a great time to measure yourself and see the changes in your size/shape that are going on. I walked out of my first size lost during a stall. I hadn't dropped anything pound-wise in days, then I put on my work pants and they fell to the floor. That's a big WOW moment, and it happened when I thought I wasn't losing anything. Look for the NSVs (non scale victories) and pay attention to the inches lost, especially during stalls. The stalls will happen, but they usually mean that you're losing inches as things adjust themselves. good luck!! -
Curious, Did This Happen To You?... No 3 Week Stall, But A Gain!
happy1957 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am curious, maybe a little disappointed, but I promised myself I would NEVER write about a stall. Well technically, I'm not. This is my three week weigh in. I expected no or very little loss based on what I have read here. I started solids last Wednesday and knew I've been consuming more calories, maybe 500-800 daily. My weigh in this morning shows a 2 lb gain. Has this happened to others? I know I am a slow loser. I lost 5.5 lbs during my liquid diet and 8.5 over the next two weeks. I read where many lose upwards of 25 lbs during that time. I am patient, but I can't imagine a gain.. Has anyone else experienced this? My Dr did make me throw away my hydrochlorothiazide which is a diuretic, could this be the cause? I have consumed a lot of ham/cheese roll ups this week as a source of Protein and low calories, maybe the salt is causing Fluid retention? (TMI) Also having a constipation issue. Using benefiber without any real relieve yet. Any suggestions? . Words of encouragement anyone ? -
I know I can. I was just bitching. i saw the videos of the surgery on Youtube. I do have to admit that the weight is dropping off at a scary pace. I didn't know a person could loose almost 3 pounds in a day. We'll see if I hit that 3 week stall everyone talks about. That will be week two of full liquids. I know, I shouldn't be concentraing on the weight loss at this point, but it's fun when you lose and it's been effortless. Boy do I feel good.

I am 31 days, 20 hours and 6 minutes from my scheduled surgery (but who's counting?!). So, as I scour the forum here for advice and information important to pre and post op, I'm seeing something very clearly. Once the surgery is done, it seems that one tends to become quite myopic. The big picture quickly narrows to a tiny pinhole of that exact moment and circumstance and it would seems that life will now only be that way. Let's look at the dreaded "3 week stall" for example. The more I read, the more I see that the body is trying to cope with its new configuration and trauma of surgery, and when the body is trying figure out what's happening to it, it will often start clinging to fluids or fat or whatever it thinks it needs to keep you alive. The fact that everyone goes through this just confirms that in my mind. Once you are healed more, the body can relax and start running on a regular rhythm again and let go of excess. I'm not a doctor or any kind of medical or health professional, but it's starting to make sense to me seeing it from a distance. It is for this very reason that I am going to take my scale to my mother's house right before the surgery and leave it there for a month. Sounds crazy huh!!! Well, I know me, and that's the only way I will stay sane. I can tell how much I weigh by the way my clothes fit anyway. I think if we back up from the scale and the daily "how much do I weigh" routine, it gives us a chance to settle into the reality of "this is my life now" and realize that the weight will come off. Just let it happen. Relax. It doesn't help to obsess over bouncing up half a pound between losing four more. Let go of the minutae of it. Wait a while to see a bigger result. Broaden your scope and just let it happen. I'm telling this to myself more than anything....

When I Don't Lose For A Week Or So....
BettyBoop replied to MikeC's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think we all go through the dreaded 3 week stall. Stay with healthy foods and what you can eat comfortably. I myself wouldn't even try to eat junk food anymore. Why set myself up for those bad habits again? I'm not quite 3 months out. I was at a stall for what seemed like weeks, right after surgery. It was driving me batty! I even thought I did better on my own with the weight loss I had lost before surgery. I still only get in 400-800 calories a day. Then boom, the scale started moving. Looking at my tools on MyFitnessPal, I had lost 10 pounds in 20 days. That is on average a half a pound a day! You're going to have stalls. You're body is just rearranging it's self. While you stall, you lose inches. Once that is done, the scale starts moving again. You didn't gain all your weight overnight. You're not going to lose it over night. -
So Strange Getting Used To Eating Differently
MegInNOLA commented on mars411's blog entry in mars411's Blog
Y'all hang in there. There are ups and downs in the speed of weight loss, especially at the points where you add different types of food. And there's the infamous 3-week stall that might happen at any point in the first couple of months and last for a LONG time! Trust your sleeves. I understand about food being a central point around which your social activities revolve--same here. Now, almost 9 months out, I still enjoy gatherings and social activities--I've just learned how to do it within the new restrictions. I eat snack-sized meals, slowly, and enjoy the conversation and visiting with people I don't see every day. At business functions, I chat with different groups while holding the exact same plate of stuff the whole time--nobody knows (or cares, really) that you're not eating. Check in with the scale but don't let it ruin your mood! It's all going to come out okay. -
Yep. Patience and do a search for the 3 week stall. Almost every sleever has one, and the length varies. Theoretically, your body has to adjust to our reduced eating habits. But you will start losing again. In the meantime, look for the NSCs, like looser clothes and increased energy levels. good luck!! Lissa

Eve Gastrectomymy Gastric Sleeve Journey
andersonlj replied to andersonlj's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I always weight on Monday mornings since that is the day of the week that I had my surgery. I have been very happy with my weight loss since my surgery on Dec 11, 2011. This week when I got on the scale I had gained almost 2 pounds. How could this have happened I wondered. I know that I did eat a little bit more on New Years Eve but could that have caused me to gain 2 pounds. I certainly hope not. I was looking at one of the boards and I came across what some call the 3 week stall. I have read postings by several people who seen to have suffered the same thing. I have put my scale away and I am continuing to get all of my protein, vitamins, fluids and most important my exercise. I am hoping that when I get back on that scale next Monday I will see a good number again. -
This Week Is Just Not Starting Off Right-- Week 3
andersonlj commented on blackanese25's blog entry in blackanese25's Blog
This is called the 3 week stall. It happend to me also and I gained a couple of pounds and I thought it was because I ate a little more on New Years Eve. I have put the scale away and got back to eating all of my protein, water, taking all of my vitaimins and have continued to go to the gym. Next week when I get the scale out I know that the number will be a good one. Keep up the fight. http://www.tickerfactory.com/ezticker/weight_loss.php/wLHbQ7h -
3-week Stall, Right On Cue
andersonlj replied to thebionicbroad's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I never heard of the 3 week stall but I have also suffered from the apparent dark hole. I thought that it was the little extra cheese that I had on New Years Eve along with my blended chili. I too am not going to get close to the scale for another week. I am no different and can get discouraged when I am doing so well and them....bam!!!!! I am glad to hear that this has happened to other people and I am not alone in this.....thanks for sharing. -
Yesterday was three weeks post-op, and the scale hasn't moved for a few days. I figure that this is (insert dramatic music here) the dreaded 3-week stall. If it weren't for you wonderful people on this forum, I would've been convinced that I was eating too much (600 calories a day?), had already stretched out my sleeve, I was a complete failure already, I would be the only one the sleeve wouldn't work for, and the Earth was falling into the Sun. But no. Because of you all, I knew what to expect. Last week, I took measurements, I've put away the scale until next week, and I'm going to keep plugging away at following the rules. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

How Long To Start Losing Weight After Surgery?
MoonSiren replied to enixon2010's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't worry! It will come off of you but I hear there is a 3 week stall. I didn't have that problem myself. The only reason you lose weight is your body is burning more calories than you are consuming. -
This Week Is Just Not Starting Off Right-- Week 3
blackanese25 posted a blog entry in blackanese25's Blog
Ok so lets start with stats Heighest 270 Surgery: 238.1 Current 223.2 * I actually gained 4 lbs in 3 days* Height 5'7" So let me start off my saying... BLAH!!!!!!!! OK so here goes.. I thought I was doing really well.. I was going to the gym 5 days a week, staying motivated, drinking all my fluids, and trying my best to stay on the program.. Don't get me wrong im not perfect and I did cheat.. normally I don't regret it because I really work my butt off at the gym, but recently I think because I've been justifying my cheat with a "well ill just work extra hard at the gym" im actually seriously sabatoging my progress. Let me say though funny part is im not cheating my eating foods im not supposed to eat.. but because i work in a bar im having a drink instead.. SO NOT A GOOD THING as im only 3 weeks out of surgery. Why am I telling you this... BECAUSE I AM GOING TO HOLD MYSELF ACCOUNTABLE! Now here is the kicker... TODAY I WENT TO THE HOSPITAL FOR SEVERE ABDOMINAL PAIN ON THE LEFT SIDE... I was in the ER for 11 hours, and they still have absolutely no idea why i have this pain .. i don't honestly think its because of the alcohol, but it scared me enough to realize that even a small cheat can be DETRIMENTAL to my health. As of now i am still in a considerable amount of pain, docs did an iodine test to see if i have any leaks and a CT Scan, all which came back normal.. SO why the pain? If anyone has the answer to that... PLEASE LET ME KNOW. From now on though.. im stickin to the plan cuz one thing i do know.. even though the alcohol may not be causing my ab pain... It sure as hell is contributing to my WEIGHT GAIN! And it is wayyyyyyyyyyyyy to early to be gaining weight! I mean ive heard of the the 3 weeks stall... but the 3 week weight gain.. GET REAL! So here is my pledge.... I will abide by the rules, i will still hit the gym, and i will hold myself accountable! -
And you may be experiencing any number of issues post-op--water retention (TOM?, salt from broth?), a slow end to the 3-week stall, etc. You may also be a slower loser, due to your lower starting weight. That's okay, too--as the poster above says, you know this is a "forever" tool, so celebrate every pound that comes off--you won't be seeing it again!!

Please Help! Im A Little Worried.
UXgrrl replied to blackanese25's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I gained a few pounds when I hit my first TOM after surgery (which coincided with the 3 week stall) and again when I ate too much salty ham over Christmas. Both times the weight came off after a couple of days, but if I hadn't been weighing myself obsessively every day (sometimes more than once -- I can't help it!) I wouldn't have noticed and stressed over it. It can be very depressing when you're watching the scale so closely and the pounds don't drop off as fast as expected. I'm trying to "forget" to weigh myself in the mornings because, if the scale didn't have good news, it tends to wreck my whole day. I know this journey isn't just about the weight but I'd be lying if I said that's not a huge part of it, and I haven't been at this long enough to see a significant improvement in my other weight-related co-morbidities. I keep reminding myself that, at my current level of calorie intake, there is no possible way I can't lose weight, however slowly. If I track my food and keep the calorie level down, then the weight will have to come off eventually. -
Super Saturday Weigh In
Less of Leslie replied to sleeve 4 me's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Weighed in and the 3 week stall is OVER!! I lost 2 lbs this week! I will NOT be fat forever -
Okay, yesterday I hit 2 weeks post-op. I mentioned before that I lost 13lbs on week 1. Haven't lost a damn lb since! I have tried on some smaller clothes that fit (1 size lower). I see a lot of posts about 3 week stall, but anyone else hit a 1 week stall that can shed some light on why so soon and when will it pass. Weighed myself again today. Still no other loss.
-
Yes, search these forums for 3 week stall, and you'll find a bazillion posts. This is a VERY common point at which to stall. Don't worry - the scale will start to move again. Just try to focus on getting in your liquids and protein, and developing new habits. You'll do great!

3 Weeks Out Of Gastric Sleeve Surgery Today And Guess What? Scale Won't Move!
Less of Leslie replied to mchez1986's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am in the 3 week stall. I haven't weighed myself since Tuesday (A big deal for me!) I won't weigh until Sleeve4me's Super Saturday weigh in. I can't keep looking at the scale EVERYDAY. I am hoping to see a big drop on Saturday. I know EXACTLEY what you mean. I am so scared that the weight is not going to come off. Thats's all a head game and we have to remind ourselves that it WILL come off, slowly maybe, but it WILL.....right? -
I have been gaining a little weight in the past couple of days. The only thing I started was drinking low calorie gatorade. Water is not comfortable for me to drink so I wanted in increase my fluid intake. So I started drinking low calorie gatorade. I am having fears that my weight loss was temporary and I will gain the weight back. I went back to a semi liquid diet with soups, protein drinks. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this the 3 week stall?

I'm in the 3 week stall right now and HATING IT!! I am obsessed with the scale and not seeing it move is driving me nutty!! I will not get on the scale until next week. Hopefully it will break soon so I can feel like I'm on track.
