    What ya eating tonight?

I found vegetarian refried pinto beans at food lion and the fat, carbs and sugar even calories are less than fat free refried beans. They are made by old El Paso

    New Here

the things i was eating the most at 3+ weeks out was tuna salad, and canned chicken salad. They are very soft and moist and are generally well tolerated. baked fish is also a good one, or shrimp. black bean soup was another staple for me, i'd add in a little unflavored protein powder as well just to help supplement. You do need to add the meats back in to help get your protein ( unless you're vegetarian). Just start small, take one small bite of tuna, and wait 4 or 5 min. then try another. and chew it up really really well, this helps tons! Good luck to you!!

    Help! Hair loss!

Barbie, do you recommend a specific brand of Nioxin shampoo? I would want to use one with no animal products and not tested on animals, since I'm a vegetarian. Thanks so much! Great to have your professional advice.
  5. When you say you don't eat these foods, does that mean that you don't like them or they don't agree? At this stage, those foods do make up several good ways to get in your Protein. You can puree just about anything to make something to eat. I put canned chicken with a little bbq sauce and pureed that. You can put vegetarian chilli in a blender and blend that, but you should strain it afterwards. You can also have cream Soups that have been blended and strained. Unflavored Protein Powder can be added to those. Just a side note, I would not recommend eating baby food. Those foods are manufactured for babies and you can't get the proper nutrition from them. Protein shakes at this stage is also a really great way to get what you need. You may want to open up a little bit and try different types and see if you can find one that you like. Good luck!

    Thinking about going vegan

I've been a vegetarian for a long time and a portion of that time I was vegan. I had been thinking about going back to a vegan diet just before I decided to have wls. Now I think I'm going to remain just a vegetarian until well after my surgery. Once I am comfortable with my new life style, I might look at going back being a vegan. There are a lot of vegetable based Protein out there and if your still having trouble getting enough, there are the Protein shakes. Have you tried Vega? It's vegan and has everything!

    real Food

The BEST fast food I found is the lunch bar at Whole Foods Market, Sprouts, Barons, Henry's, or Harry's There is such a huge array of very delicious wholesome foods, that it puts MOST fast food places to shame. The Whole Foods near me just opened up a Smoked/BBQ section. So, if I don't want deli, Italian, Asian, or vegetarian, and I can visit the smoked section.

    Not liking meat anymore

I went through a phase where hard Protein didn't appeal to me very much. And certainly for the first couple years mostly nothing I liked preOp interested me either. You can do healthy vegetarian Bandster but it requires considerably greater research on your part.

    Not liking meat anymore

Sure, there are many vegetarians with the band. You just have to be very careful to eat healthy and get enough protein from other sources.

    vegetarians and vegans

I also wasn't vegetarian before banding. After meat being impossible to eat because I can't keep it down I developed a huge dislike for it. I love the vegetation lifestyle.

    vegetarians and vegans

For my protein sources, I turn to beans (kidney, garbanzo, refried), hummous, lentils, loads of fish, yogurt, milk or soy milk (although I think soy milk has fewer grams of protein vs. cow's milk). I'll have some peanut butter from time to time but it's a trigger food for me. I use toasted sliced almonds on my salads, and add some cubed cheese, too. I wasn't a vegetarian to begin with but gave up meat when I got banded.
  13. Is it possible to become a vegetarian with the lapband? I've tried high protein diet but I don't tolerate any meat well now do I have a craving for it....

    vegetarians and vegans

I'm not going to lie, I struggle with it. Eggs are a great source of protein, but I don't always feel like making them. I buy the Garden Veggie Patties by Morningstar from Costco (they are bigger and have 18g protein). I try to drink one Muscle Milk Lite or Premier Protein daily, but that's not always the case. Cottage cheese and greek yogurt are great sources of protein, as well as beans. I like making salads that are protein packed (spinach, eggs, beans, sunflower seeds, cubed fake meat if I have it). I snack on low-fat string cheese almost daily. A lot of the processed fake meat products have a good deal of protein, but they are also pretty dry so I have to take tiny bites and chew like crazy. They are the #1 thing that makes me PB or in the beginning, get stuck. I have, to date, lost 61 pounds. I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian (though I don't drink milk, I do eat dairy products). Before surgery, I was definitely a "starchitarian" so the lap band lifestyle has most definitely helped me lose weight. My body loves the extra protein that I get, and the band limits the amount of starches I can eat. I'll definitely be following this thread to see if more suggestions come through. I would love to hear them!
  15. I'm looking for suggestions and information from other vegetarians or vegans about their experience with lap band given the limited protein intake with the lifestyle.
  16. Mary Jo I can so relate. I ate food because of the years of sexual abuse that I received as a child. Not making excuses because the minute I can identify the core I am now free- fre to choose - to get in the solution. I am a very pretty woman. The little girl in me says that if I am pretty and fat- I am protected and no one will take my body- so I would lose the weight - ( been exercising, no red meat since 1999, vegetarian since 2011, working out since 1999 and l.) however, once weighing 375, I began to change and lose weight. The moment I get close to 250 lbs, I would plateau and gain the weight back. Not platuea in weight loss...but that block..mentally of fear of the attention...so I would self sbatotoge. I just spoke to a doctor about these same issues. I will and are working on healing from the pain and void that I am feeling with food. I would love to join a group that will help me with this or a psych dr. That focuses on barbaric patients. Not doctors that just want approval but really will deal with the issues that brought me to that weight in the first place. Since my surgery in march 2013, I began at 290 lbs. I am now 252. I have not seen 240's as an adult. So I am so close. I can feel the block trying to trap me to stop eating healthy and I have slipped in some ways. But this article and discussion has allowed me to identify one of the major things I must work on to live healthy physically and emotionally. I can't wait to see what 249 feels like! Thanks

    ANY1 FRM CHICAGO?

Thanks for the response! I has neck surgery C5c6 fusion in Novemebr 2012. I am just returning to work. The surgeon told me I had some lower back disc issues also but we will deal with them later. I lost 60 lbs in doing that! I wanted this surgery to assist me and working out to tone me....now I am stuck..in pain...no working out...but I am grateful that I had the surgery before this issue . Hope to meet the chi town people in a support group or something.

    Just ate a Wendy's cheeseburger!

I dont eat fast food now and I'm preop but its not because it doesnt taste good, its more for ethical reasons and sustainable reasons (I'm getting my master's in sustainability). If it is craving the fast food you are worried about..think about how much water goes into that patty, feeding the grass, feeding the cows, etc. Think about how much oil is used to transport the meat to all the mcdonalds. Think about the video that shows KFC workers kicking their chickens. Think about all the fillers they use. I'm in no way a vegetarian but I prefer knowing where my meat came from. I'm not putting anyone down I just like to educate people about how bad fast food is (not only for your bodies but for the environment) I tell this to thin friends and family as well

    skim vs 1%

Well and that isn't a bad thing. There are a number of nutritionists and scientists that have found that Dairy really isn't all that good for you any way. Its bad fat for the most part of has to be balanced out with base (non acidic) fruits and vegetables to keep it from affecting you in some negative ways. This is from both vegetarian, vegan and meat based perspectives equally.
  20. Exactly! I've been vegetarian for 17 years & eat sugar, carby pastas, fat, & other things that have made me gain tons of weight! I got sleeved 2/6 & don't regret it. That was a silly comment. Thanks FallenAngel for addressing it! :-)

    Any Sleeved Vegetarians Or Vegans

I am a 17 year vegetarian & i've been living on the Premier Protein Shakes from Sams/Costco. Cheap, convenient, & 30g protein in each. It's easy on my stomach unlike most foods which hurts to eat. I was sleeved 2/6 & down 47 lbs so I guess I'm doing well.... I guess lol
  22. I think Proti is what my surgeon's office sells. I bought some, got them home, and then noticed gelatin in the ingredients...so not vegetarian. Bummed me out! Probably not an issue for most people, but since I'm a vegetarian, I had to return them.

    Indian Vegi Diet

After surgery I enjoyed a lot of curried dals... I would put spinach or greens with them and then puree them and eat with a little yogurt.. It was delicious. As far as the liquid portion goes.. you just get a Protein powder and mix it with the liquid of your choice. If you like, you can even get an unflavored Protein Powder and mix it with some lasse.. (the salty kind not the SWEET lasse with fruit in it) If you look at the diet your doctor gave you, you can see many vegetarian foods that you can cook into a healthy curry. As a vegetarian, you may find it more challenging to get in your protein at first, so you may need to supplement with powders for longer until your stomach can tolerate enough food for you to get sufficient protein from your vegetables/dairy/legumes. Talk to your nutritionist, she/he should be able to help you with some suggestions too.
  24. I ended up with kidney stones about 6 or 7 weeks also. Thankfully they passed on their own. I could tell bc it looked like someone added pepper to my urine. I do not think that protein per se is the issue--it has more to do with staying very, very well hydrated if you are prone to stones. My surgeon's office recommends enough fluid in this case to *output* 64 oz of fluid minimum per day, which means drinking at least 100-120 oz of water/day. Also, they gave me a low oxalate diet to follow, so while I had the stones, I didn't drink tea, cut down on dark green veggies, decreased soy (which wasn't easy since I'm a vegetarian and want to make sure I get my protein), etc. Now that I am feeling better, I am being less restrictive with the low oxalate diet (except that I limit my amount of hot tea) and I drink tons of water. That seems to be working for me.

    Any vegetarians out there?

I actually want to become a vegetarian but I'm afraid of the iron level. I don't wanna take iron pills which I don't but did before surgery (had a bleeding issue with period) so if I don't eat steak not daily I might need iron pills. I also want to just e healthy & avoid fatty food
