Depressed / Feel Like I’ve Failed
Bastian replied to nateinct's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Also, the only reason I couldn't take mine were due to post op complications, no other reason. -
I am having revision and my Doc wrote a letter of exception. I didn’t have to go through six month nutrition classes. I am low bmi of 33, 5’1 at 183.6 pds. Bcbs called to tell me I was approved for 1 night stay and so excited to finally get this band removed and switched to the sleeve. My insurance was like, we approved it but what’s your weight and are you still diabetic? Which I am but you would think they can see my history since they are my insurance... I had so many complications with the band. My surgery date is 12/31, so crazy but so happy that I will start the new year on the right foot.

I apologize to the original poster – I’m off topic. @AchieveGoals So, I just checked out ALL your activity on the site. Your comment on this post stuck me as odd. You said " until GERD kicks in" You posted ” So a little bit about me, I was lap banded when I was 17 years old, got it taken out when I was 22 because of pouch enlargement. Now I am thinking of getting sleeve done. But the GERD part scares me, it's like exchanging disease states for one to the other. It helps get rid of Diabetes, but you acquire GERD, so severe to the point that people need revisions to another sleeve or another bariatric procedure. I would be scared to get an RNY or a Bypass, I am happy getting a Sleeve (and this was a decision I thought a lot over to even get to it), so the thought of so many revisions due to GERD scares me to even get this done in the first place. It makes me wonder if I will be one of those who undergoes this too, I don't have current GERD right now, sometimes I do get heartburn maybe three times a month, but I'm not taking anything for it chronically. Anyone have any thoughts? Thank you so much! You are assuming everyone has Gerd on needs revision? Not everyone acquires GERD or needs revision after surgery. Know that many of us have no complications and are doing fine years out. (I’m five years out) Your surgeon would be the one to talk to about having heartburn three months at a time and considering sleeve. -
Sleeve revision to RNY or Bypass reason
Healthy_life2 replied to AchieveGoals's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
So, I’ve read all your activity on the site. I understand your concerns. Not everyone acquires or automatically has Gerd or needs revision after surgery. Know that many of us have No complications and are doing fine years out. Your surgeon would be the one to talk to about having heartburn three months at a time and considering sleeve. There are risk and benefits with all types of surgery. Research ad do what’s right for you. -
Thanks for the advise everyone. I have an appt after the first of the year. I had originally planned to have surgery last spring/summer, but chickened out. I'm just afraid that once it's done, I'll regret it. There's no going back. Super scary!!! So many different things to consider. I'm worried that I will have cravings for the bad foods because that's what I want to eat all the time now!! lol!! But I just feel like such crap. No energy, short of breath, joint and muscle aches, etc. I'm a nurse and some of the people I work with have discouraged me from having the surgery. They say you shouldn't change your body permanently, it will cause problems. Some of my close friends feel the same. I have had a few surgeries in the past and have had weird complications, nothing super serious, just weird. I work with a girl that had this surgery and she is doing great, bumps along the way, but great!! Sorry for the long rant!! I know you all can relate and understand! Thanks again!!

Sister abandonment sucks!!! Mine freaked out as well but ended up adjusting. She worries about all medical complications I have never revisited her reaction‘s but remember I chose to keep this and PS private for a reason. I understand your reasoning 281%!!!!!

Insurance companies don't pay for it "to help you". They pay for it to lower their expenses in the long run when it comes to obesity related issues. People don't have to be a normal weight to cause less costs so some clerk at some insurance company couldn't care less if someone reaches a BMI of 30.2612 or 23.1524 when an EWL of maybe 50% only improves health quite a lot, therefore reducing expenses on medication or e. g. diabetes related complications, including not healing wounds and/or dialysis. Maybe the people outside of the WLS community have a more realistic view on what can be expected and what not than the patients themselves anyway. Don't you think insurance company clerks aren't aware of the possible outcomes (including the less favorable ones) numerous studies suggest?!

Nervous and unsure about surgery
catwoman7 replied to erin1280's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
these surgeries are very safe and complications aren't all that common. When people do have them, they're usually minor. Working in ER, she just sees the people with problems. There are a ton of people out there who have never had issues. with a BMI of 47, you will definitely qualify. If you're able to lose the weight on your own and keep it off, then great - but just know that only about 5% of obese people are able to do that. I tried and tried and tried my entire life, but the weight kept coming back. This was my only chance of losing it for good. yes - there are risks, as there are with any surgery, but in my case, the risks of staying obese FAR outweighed the risks of surgery. good luck with your decision! As so many others have said, my only regret is that I didn't do it years ago. -
October 2019 Surgery Peeps - how are we doing?
lvidacovich replied to Cherylmilla's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for checking in! I'm doing good. No complications yet, no real issues. Down 56 since surgery and today is 8 weeks. Sunday will be 2 calendar months. Down 102 total since my HW this year. I'm doing barre and started going to the gym last week. Next appt is Jan 22. I hope to be around 260 for that. If so I'll be well on my way to my needed 250 before April for a Hawaii trip. -
Picking a goal weight...Psychiatrist worried
Darktowerdream replied to Briswife15's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I let go of some focus of weight goals I’d set while working on my health issues and I think I’m on the edge of healthy weight. In all honesty I’m at the lowest I’ve been in a long long time. My perception of time sucks as in doesn’t exist but when I first fought to lose weight against metabolic disorders and physical disability I might have hit 125lbs it didn’t stay there long before settling at 135lbs. I’m hoping due to my height and bone density change over the years that I can reach optimal goal weight for me of 100lbs (106lbs dressed) or in that general vicinity. I’ve a sinking feeling I can’t hit goal without some skin removal surgery though might there be some eating disorder issues involved. Probably. But I’ve struggled to deal with this alone for many years. I’d say it’s par for the course with Autism. Do I wish I didn’t need to worry so much, sure? But between metabolic disorders, physical disability, and inability to exercise it naturally complicates things. I’m trying to take things moment to moment and not worry about the goal weight but at the same time it’s in my mind the issue of excess skin skewing the numbers and how I see my weight. -
Good morning All, My recent physical showed I have a BMI of 47.4. I'm 39, weigh 285 lbs and about 5'6". My Dr. has recommended, and made an appointment, for a consultation with a weight loss surgery center. At this point, I do not even know if surgery will be suggested or just put on a way strict diet. I do have pre-hypertension and am on BP medicine. So I think, based on my research, I should qualify. However, I am quite scared. I know 1 person who had the sleeve done and he highly recommended it. But, my best friend is an ER Nurse and she is telling me to avoid it due to complications she has seen with ER patients. I have read about how so many of you only regret not doing it sooner, which makes me a little more optimistic. I would love to from some of you who were in the very early stages, what concerns and hesitations you had and how you ultimately decided to go with the surgery. Please share anything you think would better prepare me for the consultation too. Thank you!!! P.S. I love how supportive everyone seems here as I have been reading many entries and comments

Very funny Sid! I am sure my office mates would love that. I actually have dysplasia (a structural abnormality in my hip) which has caused significant tearing in the labrum in my right hip, unfortunately the only thing that is going to make it not hurt for me to walk is a hip replacement and my Dr told me insurance companies don't wan to be responsible for costs associated with surgical complications of patients who are obese related to elective procedures. So if I wan't my hip fixed I need to lose a significant amount of weight. Losing excess weight will make me healthier and change my life, but without a replacement hip I am going to be in pain with every step regardless.

Gastric Bypass complications

I'm two months post op and I had my surgery in Tijuana Mexico. No complications at all! Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Hi Cathy, I am in Texas too, but haven;t yet had my surgery yet. It's scheduled for next week and I have a bad case of cold feet setting in. So sorry you are having this complication. Did they tell you how long it will be before they fix your leak and how they are going to do that, success rate etc?
-
complications - esp major ones - aren't that common anymore. Maybe she just sees more since she works in the medical field (and doesn't see all the people who DON'T have them). Or maybe she's got outdated views of WLS. Back in the 60s and 70s, it WAS dangerous - but not anymore. They've come a long way since then. It's become a very safe and routine surgery. Sounds like she's the one who needs to do some research!

I just started my journey by attending an orientation seminar. Decided to tell one sister who worked medical-related career. Her first reaction was, "No way. I would never want to lose my ability to eat what I want." I am one of six kids in family. All six of us became obese in adulthood but I was first starting about age 20. My weight is now highest it has ever been at 245 with BMI at 45. I have multitple comorbidities and found out last week I am pre-diabetic with A1C at 6.2%. I told her at age 66 I didn't have enough years to lose weight to prevent diabetes/heart disease. My reason for wanting WLS is I want to live more years in retirement than Dad who died at 72 from obesity, heart disease and diabetes. She mellowed out some but kept telling me about all the horrible complications she has seen in people with gastric bypass. I told her she was only seeing those with complications and not most WLS people who do great. "Do whatever you want but really get informed before you decide." EXACTLY. My life. My health. My retirement. Wait until she is morbidly obese herself. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app

I am OFFICIALLY SLEEVED! (surgery was Dec 9th, 2019)
It was an easy procedure for me and I am not having complications. If you want to see part one of my journey go here: https://sabrinagoddess.com/life-on-the-other-side-post-op-wls
I will be making new posts during this whole process!

yeahhhhhh we are only 3 months apart on the sleeve journey. I found it has been way easier to lose with the sleeve than it was with the band...... although i loved my band. Sleeve was the easiest SX i ever had too.....

@bayougirlmrss I was told this is the fastest weight loss surgery, but I am not really looking for extremely fast. I want it to be healthy. This is our new tool and we can use it wisely for sure. Are you taking your biotin and vitamins?

December Surgery dates???
Giselle1225 replied to Kimmerz23's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi guys, so I was sleeved on Tuesday afternoon and was sleeping all day after it. Even the walks in the hospital got me exhausted. Gas pain was no joke but waking, gas pain medications given to me and a breathing exercise machine helped a lot. I got discharged yesterday with 5 incisions in my stomach. Other than the gas pain I was mostly fine. I had to do a liquid challenge the day after surgery to be discharged home. NYU was amazing. My highest weight was 258. Before liquid diet I was 253 and the day of surgery I was 240. My liver was great and no complications. I’m 5’3 and 33 y/o. Hope all of you have a speedy recovery. I’m trying to get rid of all the gas but constipation does not help. Feel free to ask if you have a question. Good luck. -
Can I take Xenical before surgery?
Ninja-slash-nerd posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Xenical (orlistat) blocks some of the fat that you eat, keeping it from being absorbed by your body. I'm in my third day pre-op and I ate things I shouldn't have yesterday because I was hungry. I have my surgery tomorrowl. I've lost 10 pounds since the whole process so I won't worry about gaining weight. But the problem is that xenical makes your stool loose. I have this silly worry that when they operate on me, they won't be able to do it well because the stool in my intestine is loose and therefor have complications. (Is this a dumb thing to worry about?) -
Is the pre op liquid diet for losing weight before the surgery? or is it for cleaning out the intestines and stomach before surgery?
SorryNameTaken replied to Ninja-slash-nerd's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is actually for shrinking the liver. The liver lays over the stomach and has to be pulled back for surgery. In rare cases, if the liver is too big, they cannot reach the stomach to perform surgery and they have to cancel the surgery. The weight loss that comes with the liquid diet is also a plus, every pound lost is a less likely chance of complications! -
From a Sleeve to a bypass
GreenTealael replied to Empress24's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
If you do not have any complications such as GERD, consider asking about DS, SIPS or SADI compared to RNY. Good Luck 💚 -
Hi all, I had the sleeve done at the end of August and have had major complications from an undetected leak. We're talking I was on death's door but due to many prayers and wonderful doctors I'm still here. Been in the hospital since Nov 5th, doc says no matter how he does it I'll be home for Christmas, I'll just have a feeding tube so there's some good news. Just have to come back after the new year to finish fixing myself up. Anyway, one of the possibilities and the end case of all this is that they would have to remove my entire stomach and attach my esophagus to my small intestine. Is there anyone who has had their whole stomach removed? The doc makes it sound like it's no big deal but it just seems like a big freaking deal to not have a stomach at all. Hi, I had. Some complications and will be on stage 1 diet longer than expected. Has any had experience with significant water retention and what if anything helped? I thought stage 1 diet was 5 days? What is the longest? Sorry for brevity but in pain. Thanks, Mya

My successful gastric sleeve surgery was Dec. 2nd and I'm doing great! No complications, little pain - haven't seen the need to take any of the pain med - and no nausea except one dry heave episode the first night, probably from the anesthesia. Right now it basically feels like I did a really hard ab workout yesterday. My surgeon has his patients continue on a high protein liquid diet for one month post-op, the same as two weeks prior. Forever breakfast will be a green smoothie with only two small chunks of frozen fruit, mainly spinach, protein powder, water, and some kefir. I started taking Barimelt vitamins prior to surgery and really like them. I'm losing a pound a day, though will only weight myself at home one day a week. Of course the weight loss will slow down but it's amazing right now. I have no hunger at all so have to keep careful track of when I've eaten and how much, but food journaling is an important habit to get into and keep and it's helping - once I waited too long and got a headache, probably from hypoglycemia which resolved immediately after eating. Everyone is different but so far my experience is an extremely positive one. Good luck!

Dec 18th and starting to getting cold feet already. Forever is forever. This has come on very suddenly for me as I have a hip injury that requires surgery to fix. I saw an orthopedic Dr. who told me insurance companies won't approve elective surgeries on people who are as overweight as I am (5'10 303) because they don't want to be responsible for post-op complications people who are as overweight as I am are prone to have after surgery (infection etc). I have been ridiculously healthy my entire life, but am seriously overweight and started taking high BP medication about a year or two ago. I just turned 49, have arthritis in my right knee and in the past two years have been experiencing pain in my right hip and high thigh area. Walking makes it worse, and so I am limping around doing as little as possible these days. So I went to see a Bariatric specialist who was able to get me approved for surgery in less than a week. Today is day 3 of protein shake diet. It's not bad, I am not hungry, it's just a lot more rich and sweet tasting that I would normally eat. It is really boring and has taken all the fun out of eating. My relationship with food has always involved eating because I like to, it tastes good and eating all the wrong things (bread/pasta carbs fried foods, fast food, junk food, nearly exclusively red meat and some seafood.) I think the scariest thing for me is risking my hair falling out or some kind of internal injury to another organ, leakage/sepsis and my normal fear of needles, doctors sharp object surgery etc. I am now starting to question if I am doing the right thing, or for the right reason but know in the long run I will be much healthier if I lose a lot of weight. Mostly I am tired of being in pain every time a take a step, but I question why an insurance co would not approve me for hip surgery why they would approve me for a bariatric surgery so quickly. I also am concerned as my health insurance is changing companies Jan 1st and wonder if the new company could refuse to cover me if there should be an issue citing a pre-existing condition?
