  1. Hi everyone, I'm new here! I'm also newly sleeved (8/10/2017) and reading a lot about everyone's experiences and questions/answers has helped me so much already! My story is a long one but I'll make it short and sweet! As a child, I had a lot of trouble losing weight. Eventually my mother took me to see a pediatric endocrinologist who diagnosed me with PCOS which has been the bane of my existence. This contributed to weight gain for the next several years. I wanted to try all other alternatives before this and found a great endocrinologist to work with a few years later. I was very successful using non-insulin Victoza (liraglutide). It's a once daily injection in your belly. I lost about 50 pounds and was so happy, until the insurance companies came in and essentially ruined my life. 🤷🏼‍♀️ So naturally over the next few years I gained it all back - and then some. Fast forward to September 2016, my wonderful boyfriend gets sleeved. I commit myself to taking care of him and supporting him in his journey. May 2017 I start to get my ducks in a row for surgery. I held off for so long fighting with my insurance to pay for it, but it never happens (that's a whole different ordeal). I proceeded as a hybrid/self pay. Which is basically getting the insurance company to pay for them to go in and do a liver biopsy (I had a slightly enlarged liver) and I picked up the tab for the cost of the procedure. I am now 1 week post op and even though I have mixed emotions right now, I don't have any regrets. Thanks for taking the time to read my little story and I'd be glad to answer any questions! Anyone in Los Angeles

Honestly, I'm only one month out but from reading everyone's comments on the topic, people only regain when they start eating unhealthy and pushing their intake and grazing (snacking alll day long). Also, a lot of people prevented weight gain because they noticed they gained a few lbs and quickly put themselves in check. Those who have gained did not do that from what i'm reading.
  3. I know this is something I want to do, but I'm nervous about the long term weight gain I have heard about. Is there information to read up on? I eat pretty intuitively/healthy now after a lifetime of yoyo dieting, but I don't want to undergo major surgery just to keep yoyo'ing. How is weight set point factored in with this surgery? Are their consequences to bariatric restriction like there are with dieting?

Why can't we keep it off naturally?

Obesity is a time-dependent problem...this essentially means the longer a person's been obese, the less likely he/she'll maintain a weight loss after diet and exercise. Assume we have two 40-year-old women. Both are 5'5" and weigh 300 pounds with identical body fat percentages. The difference is one woman's been obese since childhood while the other one was thin all her life until massive weight gain during pregnancy in her mid 30s. The woman who's been obese since childhood is unlikely to maintain a major weight loss without surgery. Her body's had 30+ years to hormonally adopt obesity as its default state. If/when she enters a weight-reduced state with diet/exercise, her body fights to return to 300 pounds (and usually succeeds). Meanwhile, the woman who has been obese for a few years has a better chance of losing and keeping weight off. Her body hasn't had time to adapt to the potent hormonal influences of obesity. Diane Carbonell is a woman who was thin/average-sized until she became obese (300+ pounds) in adulthood after several pregnancies. She lost weight the old-fashioned way via diet/exercise and has kept it off since the late 1990s. I suspect her body never really had a chance to become acclimated to obesity since she wasn't fat for a terribly long time: http://www.dianecarbonell.com/
  6. Hi. My partner is having the gastric sleeve op in 5 weeks time because he is type 2 diabetic and needs to get off the medication. He is only slightly over weight. He used to be into his sport in a big way but has lost a lot of fitness due to the effects of the weight gain and medication side effects. So, my question is, what support did you feel you needed from your partner or family/friends after the op? Was it more about having someone to talk to openly about how you were feeling? Did you have mood swings? How did you feel in the first few days after the op with limited eating ability? How did you keep occupied in those first 2 weeks after the operation? Any tips and ideas greatly appreciated.
  7. Been away for a bit - went out of town the beginning of August and since then have been struggling with depressive episodes so all I do is lay around and watch YouTube lol. However, I had my diet visit today and it went well. I lost 4.6 lbs over the last month, which is all right! I have an appointment next week with a psych doc from my therapist's practice and we are going to discuss possibly starting Wellbutrin to help with anxiety and depression. It has some slight appetite suppressant qualities (and the NP today said it's also used for smoking cessation) so it would be a good fit compared to some medicines that might increase hunger/weight gain. So... overall, I'm coping. School starts next week and getting back into that routine will be a blessing. Thank you for reading & have a great week!

FYI I don't smoke - just realized the way I worded it could have implied that I do. I just thought it was interesting that it can suppress appetite and cravings, including nicotine cravings.

  8. You said you completed a 'light' workout. That may be the key to your weight gain... Glycogenation is the dominant reason for weight gain when working out while consuming so few calories. Exercise boosts our muscles' energy storage capacity. Since active people need more fuel, a body that has just exercised adapts by increasing its capacity for glycogen storage. This process leads to temporary water weight gain. Also, very low-calorie diets (read: the pre-op liquid diet) can result in water retention. Therefore, you may be losing fat, but the progress you've made is masked by water weight gain. Maybe you lost a pound or two of fat the first few days but gained a few pounds of glycogen and/or water in that time. In summary, stay off the scale. Let your body sort out the changes it's experiencing. Measure your progress by the looseness of your clothing, not by an arbitrary scale number. Good luck to you.
  9. No. No weight gain after surgery. Thanks!

    That time of the month…

Did anyone notice if their water retention/weight gain intensified after getting the sleeve as well? I have been sticking to the diet and making sure to keep my fluid intake up...but it seems that I'm retaining water worse than I had before. It may also go hand in hand with the intensified period, bleh.
  11. Yes and honestly my OB said the same thing to me when I was pregnant with my daughter in 1998! Basically when I was blaming my excess weight gain on not being able to exercise (had some spotting early on) he didn't pull any punches and laid it on the line for me.

    No weight loss first week??

My nurse had warned me before surgery that a lot of people show weight gain between 6-10 lbs the first few days after surgery. I don't think I even weighed myself til after my 2 week post op. Also I didn't even want to bend over to take out my scale. They also recommended only weighing myself once a week. After 3 weeks I stalled for about 12 days which was frustrating. But I read a lot of people on here had the same happen at the same time. I remember for about the first month I completely regretted having surgery and thought it might not work for my but I'm still chugging along. I've been losing almost exactly 2 lbs a week since my first stall. I'm down 84lbs since my highest weight. Just keep reminding yourself of all the non scale related reasons you're doing this and it will be easier to keep focus. Measurements are another great way to see progress. I suggest taking them now if you haven't taken them since beginning the process. I didn't take mine until a month after surgery and I've lost 18 inches since then. Best of luck! It will all be worth it!

    No weight loss first week???

You will gain after surgery. The weight gain is from the IV and gas during surgery. I gained about 8lbs and loss it within 1.5 weeks. I was pre warned of this before surgery so it wasn't a surprise to me. Hang in there, the weight will drop.
  14. *insert newbie pre-surg boilerplate disclaimer* My take away from Dr. Vs video is a bit different. I feel like he was saying that exercise is not a magic bullet to achieve long term weight loss success. He pointed out that many people use it as an unproductive punishment, rather than a natural evolution of fitness. He said that weight loss after surgery is controlled by diet rather than exercise. And that before we go to the gym, we need to be sure to confirm we have 1) A great post WLS diet in place and 2) We have our head/psychology/stress management in good shape. Then and only then will exercise benefit our long term goal of staying healthy and at a normal weight. I think he makes sense here to some degree. And completely agree that what works for my fluffy ass, isn't going to necessarily be true for anyone else. (Example: So for instance, I'm fluffy and might think, "Dayum, I'm fluffy cuz I like Dr. Phil too much and I'm not disciplined enough to get to the gym each day." So I try harder to go to the gym, I'm just 2 months post surgery, and eating too few calories to support an intense, extended ass whoopin' at the gymn--barely meeting my protein requirement. I do my circuit, come home, am exhausted and hungrier after the activity...and I flop down in my easy chair, turn on Dr. Phil, am starving and yet, beat and end up eating more volume/calories or eating off plan with easy slider food (like a whole can of Pringles or falling into a bag of Lay's, cuz my body is demanding more calories, those types of calories don't stretch my pounch and go down SO DAYUM GOOD. I end up undoing all the good of the activity and worse, to the point that I would have been much better off, just staying on my post surg diet, doing something to address my stress levels and processing the headwork that contributed to my fluffy state and not exercising in the first place. Or--I only go the gym 1 time a week cuz it makes me feel like a crap sandwich and so I beat myself up for it for being such a loser which makes me depressed and I end up turning on Dr. Phil, grabbing the can of Pringles, etc--and then find it nearly impossible to force myself back to eating as I KNOW I should. Weight gain/guilt ensue...) There was a fairly recent study that shows some argument that exercise alone will not help weight loss. But, I do know that doing exercise like slow burn and resistance training absolutely helps improve insulin resistance, which directly affects weight loss and how calories are processed by the liver post workout...so, yeah. Interesting question and love the discussion!!

  17. Are you measuring yourself? The scale is not the whole story. I went from a size 14 to a size 10 with only losing 5 lbs. I'm working out like crazy, my hips are narrowing, my waist is shrinking, my thighs, are getting more firm, as are my arms. I keep dropping the width on my bras! But in that time I've fluctuated between 172 and 168. Sometimes up, sometimes down. I'm about to start trying on size 8's and haven't lost a single lbs in 3 weeks. Also make sure your sodium intake isn't too high causing retention, check to see when you will be getting your period as that can cause water weight gain as well. DON'T PANIC!!!!!!!!!!! You are committed to this, working hard. It will happen for you, don't give up and don't be discouraged!!!!! CHeck your measurments, enjoy the success you've had so far. You are doing AMAZING! You have recommitted and are on fire, this is exciting.
  18. I am between 8-9 months out and a couple months ago, I'd not been as disciplined. I've been stalled or stuck in the same 5lb range for about 2months. For the last month, I've gotten back on track with what I eat and I've been killing it in the gym. Last week, id dropped 4lbs taking me to 222lbs. This week, I've been working just as hard and I've gained over 5lbs. Can someone shed some light. I'm trying really hard not to cry because it makes no sense.

  20. Hello everyone So I'm 14 months out from my sleeve and I have had a stable weight for months now and my partner wants us to try for a baby. I also want a baby but I'm so scared of gaining weight. Like I mean is bad how scared I'm to gain weight its literally all I think about. I just don't never want to see myself at the weight I was before.

When did your weight problems start?

It's eerie how our weight gain trajectories and stories have striking similarities. Thank you for sharing your story! In addition to weight gain right before the onset of puberty, I also had a father who was a problem drinker. On top of that, he was also a crack addict during my early and middle childhood years. I used food as a distraction starting in my preteen years. My mother was obese and worked long hours at a factory, so she'd come home hungry. Her portion sizes were massive. The role-modeling for reasonable choices simply wasn't there. I, too, received unwanted attention for my breast size in my pre-teens. I was wearing a 38C bra at age 12 when many of my classmates were still flat-chested or had smaller breasts. To keep a long story short, I fought the battle of the bulge for 2+ decades starting in my teens. I could lose substantial weight, but could never keep it off. In fact, I'd lost 200+ pounds through yo-yo dieting in those 2 decades (lose 30, regain 60, lose 50, regain 90, etc). Bariatric surgery was/is my last hope for keeping the weight off.

I am concerned that you are taking such a drastic step physically without considering the mental/emotional aspect of your eating choices. If you gained your weight back with the sleeve, how will you prevent it this time? It can't be a solely physical solution - your body adjusts and your brain learns how to get the calories it wants, you've already proven that. Weight gain isn't solely a physical thing - the solution isn't solely physical either. It really worries me to see folks keep cutting away at themselves thinking the next surgery will be their nirvana, when what really needs to happen is dealing with the mental issues that drive the weight gain. From a personal perspective, I started looking into WLS two years ago and went in to therapy to deal with my compulsive eating issues before I had the surgery, and I think it's still a challenge even after all of that work. Just a thought, this isn't a judgment by any means, I found therapy to be really helpful and I'm so glad that I have that support right now as I deal with post-op stuff.
  23. First off, this is for bariatrics. If you're only 115 lbs and have never been higher than 175, why are you even on here? Secondly, everyone has different issues which caused their weight gain. Google it. Everyone here is already at their breaking point with their weight, to the point that they're considering extreme measures. They don't need you belittling them for being overweight and throwing your weights in their face. Go away. K, bye. [emoji1308]

Too many simple carbs (sugar) can cause weight gain. Plus....gas & stool you wouldn't like.

    Insulin

I'm just starting my process. Saw the surgeon last week, the endo today, NUT tomorrow...etc. The reason I had to see the endo was elevated A1C. It must be below 9.0 before they'll operate. I'm tentatively scheduled for 12/18. Endo put me on Xultophy, which is insulin/liraglutide. I've never been on insulin. I know it causes weight gain and the doc was adamant that I not gain weight prior to surgery. My question, however, is were any of you able to come off insulin after surgery?
