    Are you vegetarian?

I am a vegetarian & am working on weaning out dairy & eggs to be vegan. You will get a lot of differing opinions on this topic, but ultimately you need to make the decision that's right for you. It is actually very easy to be a vegetarian with the sleeve. You can get in your Protein in a variety of ways: cheese, tofu, dried edemame (this has been a life saver at 14g of protein for only 1/4 cup), yogurt, meat alternatives (I like Gardein products), Beans...I'm sure you get the picture. I have tried meat twice since being sleeved 6 months ago. It was moist & I chewed very well & vomited both times. My sleeve doesn't seem to like meat at all. So, I make it a point to just eat as healthfully as I can using mostly plant based whole foods. I can not get in the quantity that I did before being sleeved. I keep track of my food intake on My Fitness Pal so that I make sure to get in enough protein. Different doctors & nutritionists will have differing opinions too. My nutritionist says that my diet is a little carb heavy, and that I would lose weight more quickly if I ate less fruit, rice & beans, tofu & rice, etc. You know what, I've lost 101 lbs. in 6 months so i'm not really that concerned. I eat what feels right & healthy. I drink my Water. I exercise. That seems to work out just fine. So, don't let anyone discourage you from being vegetarian or even vegan. It is possible to get in all your protein without any animal products. It is also not the end of the world if you eat 2 pieces of fruit a day instead of the half a piece recommended. You can also eat healthy grains in moderation too. Quinoa is a great one. So, listen to your body's intuition. Sometimes it's the smartest thing that we can do.

    Are you vegetarian?

I feel best when I am eating a sugar-free, whole food, plant based diet, but I'm not sure how well that would work with my sleeve. Any sleeved vegetarians here? I have not followed such a diet in years, but when I did, I had tons of energy and felt great.
  4. Whole Foods sells a vegetarian broth in a cardboard box/can, found with the liquid soups. I think the brand was Pacific. Their veggie broth is kosher, too. Unfortunately, it tastes too vegetable-y to use as a straight substitute for chicken broth. For some recipes it would be great, for others too strong. So you can try a box and see. I've used it in other recipes and cut it with water if it is too strong.

Trying to get my weight up

I appreciate the honesty. But realistically there are many things that I already don't eat. I am vegetarian. And fairly strict.. I don't know what accounts for my body changed that won't allow me to metabolize and lose weight. So many things that are in the average diet I don't eat But you would never know that looking at me.
  6. Wow! what a journey this has been. this all started 8-8-12. six months of classes, 2 psyche evals, 31lbs gone... got this pre-surgery diet. um, high protein, zero starch. ok. I'm a vegetarian going on 6 yrs now. eat salmon or tuna occasionally. not much on pasta, bread, rice, etc. not big on dairy either. you think I would be a stick person. haha. weight loss has been slow (not a gym rat). I'm excited and terrified at the same time. trying to keep up the protein, and worried about losing my hair (heard the horror stories). supplements? protein shakes? juicing? doing them all... any input from all you advancers would be greatly appreciated... thanks.

    Thinking about going vegan

Did you ever end up starting a flexatarian, vegetarian or vegan diet? Let me know how it's going. I know a couple people mentioned with how little we can eat they are worried about not getting the nutrition we need - but think about it - all we really get from animal protein is just that protein. We aren't really getting a lot of other nutrients from it if you aren't incorporated the vegetables & fruits. I figure I'd be getting MORE nutrients on a vegetarian or at least a flexatarian diet from whole foods than I get right now. I do take my multivitamin every day as well. Anyway - just wondering how it's going. I'm 6.5 months out and I've really been thinking about this as well. It was something I wanted to do before I ever had surgery - but every time I tried I just couldn't stick with it because I'd get too hungry. I'm thinking for the summer doing 1 day a week as a raw food vegan day, another day as a regular vegan day and at least 2 days where I eat meat and the other 3 just being lacto-ovo vegetarian and see how that works out for me. 8. I just made this flavorful dish that is vegetarian but very delicious! You need: 2 tbs of Olive Oil, 4 cloves of garlic-thinly sliced, 2 tsp of grated ginger, 1 tsp seeded, coarsely chopped Habanero chili (which I found at chain grocery store), 1 tsp ground cumin, 1 cup chopped onion, 4 cups chopped Yam, 3 cups cauliflower florets, 28- ounce can diced tomatoes, 2 cups cooked black Beans, 1/2 cup Water, pinch saffron (boy that's expensive!), 1 cup chopped cilantro, 1 tsp of sea salt, or to taste. 1. Heat oil in 6 qt. stockpot over med heat. Add garlic, ginger, habanero, and cumin. Sauté until fragrant (about 2 min. 2. Add the onions, yams, cauliflower, tomatoes, beans, water, and saffron. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and cover (should be simmering), stirring occasionally, for 20-30 min. 3. Add the Cilantro and salt- adjust seasoning- let simmer for 5 more min. Although it suggests to serve with rice- I had to pass. Another option could be flatbread. It had nice heat- not a summer dish but its been chilly here in New England!

    What is your favorite product?

Torani SF syrups, Laughing cow babybel cheese and the soft cheeses (50 cal and 35 cal, respectively), Sargento reduced fat cheddar cheese sticks, 100-calorie packs of almonds, Sabra individual hummus packs (though I prefer fresh hummus, they are good in a pinch), Morningstar vegetarian "sausage" patties (80 cal, 10 g protein, low carb), low-fat ricotta cheese, fat-free plain Greek yogurt, PB2 or JustGreatStuff powdered peanut butter, almond milk, lite soy milk, Morningstar veggie "meat"balls, spaghetti squash (lots of fiber and filling), watermelon (seems to make me lose more weight and keeps kidney stones at bay due to citrates), strawberries (dipped in FF Greek Yogurt mixed with SF black cherry torani), homemade iced coffee, Designer Whey and Unjury protein powders, Pure Protein protein bars (only eat 1 about every 2 weeks), Weight Watchers Greek yogurt bars (80 calories, 5 grams protein, 13 carbs--once a week treat but better than commercial fro yo or ice cream plus good protein boost for low-cal treat), SmartWater (electrolytes!), Rancho Gordo dried beans--make the beans from scratch and they are so much better than canned, homemade salsa from the local Mexican joint--put it on everything for extra flavor, sprouted tofu--more protein, Morningstar crumbles for homemade veggie chili, red pepper strips, mini cucumbers, romaine lettuce, Penzey's herbs and spices, fresh cilantro, Granny Smith apples (occasional treat for fiber boost), quinoa (protein boost).....

    I wanna scream!

The smells are hard for me! I usually try to eat when they're eating....unless it's outside of mealtimes. I try to eat approximations of their meals and since I shop...they eat pretty much what I shop for. I find myself gasping at their portion sizes...my husband ate some vegetarian sausage parties yesterday...but he had four of them! Yup that was me not so long ago! It's hard at restaurants....

  12. I really think that you will be happier with the surgery. I can lost 40 lbs, but I gain it back then lose it then gain back ... etc. I'm where I am in my weight because I can't get skinny so I'm having this surgery in hopes to fix that. I'm 38 and my body doesn't lose like it use to. I am even a vegetarian who has cut out sugar. I use Splenda. I don't have caffine and I still can't lose the weight. So this is the next step. This step seems to work for people who can't lose it any other way. I can do without the bad food, but my body still seems to stay fat. Best of luck!!!

    Tofu!?!?

Protein content in tofu: One half-cup serving of raw firm tofu contains 10.1 grams of protein. The recommended daily intake is 56 grams for most men and 46 for most women. A half-cup of tofu is approximately 4 oz by weight, or just under 1/3 of the average sized 14 oz package of tofu. By comparison, 1/2 cup dairy milk contains 5.1 grams of protein, one 3 oz egg contains 6 grams and 4 oz ground beef contains about 26 grams of protein. Tofu is an excellent source of vegetarian protein. Calories in tofu: One half-cup serving of raw firm tofu contains 94 calories. By comparison, 4 oz ground beef contains 331 calories, 1/2 cup of 2% milk has 60 calories and 4 oz of cheese packs 320 calories. http://vegetarian.about.com/od/healthnutrition/p/tofunutrition.htm Any recipe you have or find can be converted to using Tofu, it's a Great Protein alternative and if it calls for rice try Quinoa, it's healthier than rice. Problem is Society is all about eating meat When a plant based diet is much healthier in general.

    Just starting!

Hi all! I'm two nutrition visits and a psych eval away from submitting for insurance approval! I'm super excited for this surgery and hopefully to have the outside match the inside! I'm really nervous about getting approval. My highest weight was 330 but then went vegetarian and was at 290 and had my gallbladder out and my surgeon suggested I look at WLS. I'm starting the pre-op diet early that consists of 1200 calories a day so I can lose more weight before the surgery. My surgeon said hopefully we'll have a July/August date. Fingers crossed! Looking forward to getting to know everyone and sharing this journey with you all.

Please help in pain and confused

Honestly I don't mind if my food is the cause if the pain ill go vegetarian..
  16. The diarrhea might be gallbladder related. Is it just with certain foods or all the time? I had mine out back in September and I know if I eat certain foods I have to go to the bathroom within 15-20min after. I have a friend who had hers out and had to go on a full vegetarian diet because the majority of foods gave her diarrhea.

    Who Are You?

I am more than my decision to have a VSG. I am 33 years old and have been large all my life. I come from a family with a history of Breast Cancer, Conjestive Heart Failure, Diabetes, and Morbid Obesity. I plan to be different. I am a wife of 1 husband and an adoptive mother to 2 awesome boys ages 3 and 11. My background is in Professional Development and Recruiting. My DH and I have been trying to have children of our own for 9 years!! We have been and are more that ready to conceive children. I have been told over and over you are just too fat to conceive babies and every time I hear it it breaks me down. Thus my decision to have VSG Surgery. At first I was one of the skeptic about WLS. I would say "Why mess with you blueprint?" Until I realized I was one of the one that could not lose weight on my own. I have Yo-yo dieted, tried vegetarianism, and restricting what I ate. I have failed miserable with all of these things. After meeting with Dr. Jamokay Taylor he educated me on the benefits of WLS and how with a lifestyle change I could finally succeed in conceiving my babies. I am overly excited about my decision and can not wait until September 23rd when I am on that table changing my life. Thank you all for the positive support I receive daily. Looking forward to a new me! Here is a before VSG picture of me and I am looking forward to my after picture.
  18. Hello everyone! I hope this is the appropiate forum, just a quick background about me. I'm a African-American female, 24 years old and I have decided to get the RNY. I had my gallbladder out in November 2012 and my surgeon said I had fatty liver from being overweight and should consider WLS. At first I was angry because I didn't see myself as extremely obese and needing WLS. I had converted to vegetarianism in March of 2012 and went from 330lbs to 290lbs. I thought that I was on a road to healthy lifestyle and felt more confident than I ever had. But I chose to go see the nutritionist and do some research about WLS and see hwat happens. As of last month I decided to start the paperwork and today after my 5th visit (I have to do 7 for insurance) I've decided to go with RNY. I've been reading the threads on here and talking to people who've had both sleeve, lap band, and RNY. I was nervous for a while and people keep telling me that there are easier ways to lose weight. But I feel as though I need real help! I want to live a long and healthy life and I want the outside to look how I feel on the inside. I have two visits left and my psych eval before they submit to the insurance company for approval. I'm so nervous; I'm scared they'll reject it and I will have gotten my hope up for nothing. Also, today I was given the pre-op diet. The nutritionist wants me to start earlier so that I'm not struggling 10 days before and I'll be used to it. Any suugesstions!?

  21. Has anyone wondered if lack of dietary fat can cause hair loss? I am a vegetarian and all of the dairy products that I eat are fat free or low fat--0% Greek yogurt, low-fat cheese, low-fat ricotta, soy products, etc. My surgeon always says not getting enough protein the first 2 weeks after surgery (or on an ongoing basis) is the biggest reason people have hair loss a few months later--so I was diligent during the first 2 weeks and after that about getting mine in. However, I am still losing hair. I take Biotin and I'm not sure if it's helping (surgeon said it might not help, but it can't hurt). My hair loss isn't awful--only I really notice it..my part still looks ok etc. But it's embarrassing when it comes out during the day on my clothes or on a table etc. It was enough that my stylist noticed it. I had my hair colored a darker red yesterday and also had a few inches cut off. I also bought some Nioxin shampoo. I am seriously considering adding even a TBSP of good fat to my diet a day--maybe some olive oil on veggies or half an avocado, etc. Any thoughts?

PRE-OP VSG VLOG 12 Foods - I need your input!

Greek yogurt - I never ate it before surgery and now love it! In your later stages, you can eat things like quinoa salads, cheese enchiladas, meatless chilis, lots of choices - you'll essentially eat whatever you did before, just in smaller (much smaller) portions. I dont restrict carbs, sugar, calories - I track and target protein and fluid intake only. It just so happens with just targeting protein and fluid, the carbs, sugar and calories stay naturally low! Your surgical center should have a nutritionist on staff that should provide you with a very detailed diet plan for both veg and non-vegetarian patients. If not? Yikes, that scares me - but I know this VST community will come to the rescue!

    Foods after 6 weeks

Hi pretty much anything I would normally. I am a vegetarian though. Today I had my first raw carrots. I am 6 1/2 weeks out.

    New Here

I am not a vegan or vegetarian I am afraid of meat because I have a hard time processing it. My stomach is very tight in the middle and sometimes meat makes me have nausea. The taste of meat is not appealing to me. I would to be able to eat it but the texture in my tummy and the way I feel when trying to process/digest it is not pleasant.
