    Lactose can be your Enemy!

Oh yes...lactose can certainly have that effect. Which makes it inconvenient as heck b/c most pre-made shakes are heavy in lactose. Generally now I use protein powder (I like IsoPure, BioTrust and Purely Protein), and make my own shakes with either lactose free milk, oat milk or almond milk. Eggs don't bother me, (but I do know they bother some who are lactose intolerant). so I eat them a lot (egg beaters, because of the calories). When I did puree's, I actually ran chicken through the food processor with a little broth and it made a thick, high protein soup. It sounds gross but with a few spices it wasn't that bad I also had to give up cottage cheese and yogurt, although I did try almond milk based yogurt, but didn't care for it. Some people do like it though, so maybe it's worth a try for you. Peanut butter and almond butter are also a nice treat but the calories/fat can be a problem if you have too much, of course. Hope that helps a little. It's a challenge, for sure, but you got this! I've found that this whole process is full of ups and downs (and not just the weight either) but when I focus on the big picture and remember why I did this, it makes it all worthwhile!

    Food Before and After Photos

First time posting meals but I did read through almost the first 100 pages of the thread. Let me just say, there was a lot of salad and yogurt... and I plan to continue that trend. 😂 Breakfast was 1/2 cup nonfat plain Greek with 2tbsp peanut butter powder and 1/4 cup frozen berries. Ended up eating the rest for first dinner (5pm). Oh, and no sugar added hot chocolate with a scoop unflavored protein powder (not pictured). Lunch was 1/2 cup cottage with 2 slices roasted turkey slices and sautéed with 1/4c onion, 1/4 cup zucchini some garlic, and some garlic chili sauce. Second Dinner 7pm was a low carb tortilla crusted with shredded cheese blend and dipped in 1/4 cup simply ragu. Ended up eating the whole thing over an hour.

    Pre surgery diet freak out

I did a 2 week "full liquid" diet. I was hungry the first 3 days and it got so much easier after that. I did a protein shake mixed with ice and pb fit for breakfast blended. Then broth for lunch and protein shake for dinner. I also had yogurt in between lunch and dinner (i would go 6 hours between lunch and dinner due to work. Decaf tea was my friend. So was the gatorade zero and crystal light. The first days are the hardest but do not lose your resolve, then it makes it harder to start again! Good luck! Protein powder

I use Naked Whey to put extra protein in my drinks. Or are you looking for an unflavored clear protein? I just ordered Celebrate Vitamins' Unflavored Protein with probiotics and hoping that it works well for adding protein to yogurt/etc.

    Purées Not Going Well

The change in your taste buds can really make things difficult. I couldn’t eat some of my favourite vegetables & proteins for quite a few months so I hear you. Don’t worry, they will start to taste yummy to you again as you progress. I found nothing really tasted good on the purée stage until a friend told me she could successfully eat puréed poached chicken with lots of gravy & chicken stock. It was probably the salt from the gravy & stock that made it tastier lol. I ate a lot of soups - strained & puréed - as they seemed to go down more easily. As did yogurts. Take it slowly to introduce purées especially if they are causing you discomfort. Start with one purée meal a day. You may be someone who needs to go through the stages more slowly - it’s not uncommon. Good luck.

Meal plan for 1 year post op

Congrats on the 70lb weight loss!!! My first thought would be to do whatever you did to lose those 70lbs! You've done it before, and you can do it again! Cut out whatever foods you are getting "sloppy" with and get back to basics - high protein will will up that pouch. As for meal ideas - I admit that my meals may seem boring, but they are satisfying! I do 3 meals a day, and sometimes add in 1 snack as well. Breakfast - Greek Yogurt or Eggwhites w/ jimmy dean sausage crumbles and 1/2 slice american cheese or Toasted zero carb bread with cream cheese and everything bagel seasoning or fairlife protein shake Lunch - half Turkey sandwich (on zero carb bread or low carb tortilla) or greek yogurt or protein shake or leftovers from last night's dinner Dinner - chaffle pizza or buffalo shrimp or 1/2 of a lean cuisine or bunless veggie or turkey burger or ahi tuna Snack - (pretty much anything 100 cals or less) - greek yogurt or SF popsicle or slice zero carb bread or 1/2 tortilla w/ smidgen of PB or 100 cal choc pretzel pack or raw veggies w/ cream cheese or ranch Hope you got at least 1 good idea out of this list. You can DO this!!

Salad. Napa cabbage. Red and orange bell pepper. Black beans. Cotija cheese. Dressing made with low fat Greek yogurt, lime juice, and spices. 150 kcals. I am going to eat all of it, even if I take two hours 😬yummy In a biggish pasta bowl for scale.
  9. I'm about two weeks ahead of you. I eat three meals per day, 2-4 ounces each. No snacks, but I often drink a protein shake or protein hot chocolate between meals. I'm not hungry at all and I don't have any of those side effects of hunger that I would have had before surgery if I went a single day under 500 calories. Sometimes I kind of want to eat between meals, not because I'm hungry but because I have my mind on something I want to eat. It's a little frustrating because I would enjoy half a yogurt or a couple ounces of cottage cheese much more than a protein shake, but I don't want to get in the habit of snacking. How many calories are you getting per day? 4 tablespoons (2 ounces) 3x/day is not much compared to most programs. I'm getting 400-500 calories per day and the nutritionist said I should be eating more (800-1000 calories/day, but that seems too high). How much do you exercise? If you are eating 300 calories per day and working out, I don't think that would be enough to reasonably sustain you.

    Food Before and After Photos

Girls weekend in the mountains. Breakfast on our deck & view. I ate the scrambled eggs only but snaffled one of the fruit & yogurt dishes for later in the day. After pxt of our Ploughman’s lunch. Was to be at a campfire on a rise but way too cold & windy so settled for a lounge in front of the fire on the terrace. I ate so much cheese & drank more than I usually do but it was deliciously wonderful.

    Upset

So, to me, that does seem like it's a bit more than one would expect from an immediate post-op diet. That said, I only have my own experiences from which to speak and if this is the diet that your doctor prescribed, then they may have a reason. For comparison, here is the diet I am on currently (I hit 10 weeks post-op tomorrow), which is not really standard for most programs that I've seen: 2 times a week: Breakfast - 9am - 2 scoops of Celebrate 4-in-1 in 8oz of unsweetened almond milk + 2 tsp Benefiber (185 calories) Lunch - 1pm - 1 scoop of Celebrate 4-in-1 in 8oz of unsweetened almond milk + 2 tsp Benefiber (115 calories) Snack - 4pm - 1 protein bar (18-20g of protein -Think, Pure Protein, or Built Bar) (160-230 calories) Dinner - 7pm - 1 protein bar (18-20g of protein -Think, Pure Protein, or Built Bar) (160-230 calories) 60+ ounces of water (usually Crystal Light) (40 calories if all Crystal Light) 1 time a week: Breakfast - 9am - 2 scoops of Celebrate 4-in-1 in 8oz of unsweetened almond milk + 2 tsp Benefiber (185 calories) Lunch - 1pm - 1 scoop of Celebrate 4-in-1 in 8oz of unsweetened almond milk + 2 tsp Benefiber (115 calories) Snack - 4pm - 1 bottle of Premiere Protein protein water (20g of protein in 16.9 ounces of fluids) (90 calories) Dinner - 7pm - 1 protein bar (18-20g of protein -Think, Pure Protein, or Built Bar) (160-230 calories) 4 times a week: (up from 3x/week as of this week) Breakfast - 9am - 2 scoops of Celebrate 4-in-1 in 8oz of unsweetened almond milk + 2 tsp Benefiber (185 calories) Lunch - 1pm - 1 scoops of Celebrate 4-in-1 in 8oz of unsweetened almond milk + 2 tsp Benefiber (115 calories) Snack - 4pm - 1 protein bar (18-20g of protein -Think, Pure Protein, or Built Bar) (160-230 calories) Dinner - 7pm - 3-4.oz of allowable soft foods (I've had ground chicken, ground turkey, pureed chicken salad made with hummus & greek yogurt, ricotta bake, baked/steamed whitefish, scrambled eggs) (210 - 250 calories) So I think there would be room to make adjustments to your diet plan, as long as you would still be hitting your protein goals, but that is definitely a conversation you would want to have with your doctor. Simply be upfront with them about your concerns about the slow weight loss and ask for guidance on how to make changes to your diet plan to facilitate better results. Some times you have to make those changes to the diet plan in order to keep your body on it's toes!
  12. some of them do because of the sugar in it. These tend to be those who work at clinics that stress an ultra-low-carb post-op diet (mine wasn't one of those, fortunately - they're into a more balanced approach). Although even some of those low-carb diet pushers are OK with a few berries, since they're low-glycemic. I didn't eat bananas for quite awhile after surgery (but mostly because they became sickeningly sweet to me post-surgery), but I did throw a few berries on my morning yogurt starting pretty early out..

I just tried siggi's almond butter and vanilla skyr (Icelandic yogurt) and it is delicious! Very filling. Add a small salad and you have lunch. It is 19grams of protein! 260 calories. They also have mixed berry with almond butter which does not appeal to me, and Apple & Cinnamon, which does, but it was not in my local grocery store.
  14. Try protein water. I think you can get them at Walmart. I drank a grape and fruit punch one that tasted similar to the Mio flavoring. I didn't like the chalky after taste but if I poured it over ice so it was super cold I could drink it. Can you try mixing a protein drink with milk? That would help thin it out of if it seems too sweet. There are a lot of high protein Greek yogurts and Fairlife milk has more protein than regular milk. Also try drinking the protein drink over ice. If it was thinned out form the ice and super cold I could drink it easier. If you are allowed coffee you could try mixing some vanilla protein shake in as creamer. I also used the Unjury brand of non flavored powder. You can get a sample pack of unflavored, flavored shake mixes (mix with Fairlife milk) and soups. Just make sure the liquid for soups is not too hot or the powder with clump.
  15. I am now so gagged out on shakes and trying to gag down protein drinks. I just don't know what to do. I tried mixing powder in with yogurt. (BARF). I thought about bars. But most have chocolate or artificial sweeteners. I need some guidance. PLEASE!!!
  16. depended on the type of food. Cottage cheese, yogurt, and refried beans were probably about 1/2 cup servings. Once I could eat veggies, those were probably about 1/4 cup, and fish was also 1/4 cup,

Recent RNY - How ya doing?

July 17th was my RNY surgery! I’m down near 45lbs since starting my program last September. 20 for surgery, 25 after. I’m tolerating most foods with exception to Greek yogurt and beans. I am aversive to water and protein shakes in the AM. ☹️ but pushing through. I’ve had some mood swings and light hair loss. I am feeling pretty awesome and my clothes are getting pretty big!!! My goal is 125, my start weight was 213 so I have just about 43lbs to go!!! I should mention I’m a shorty measuring in at 5’1”!!

    Food Before and After Photos

Fish tacos with cedar plank grilled halibut, creme sauce made with low fat Greek yogurt, lots of fresh veggies, avocado slice, homemade pico de Gallo, and a bit of cotija cheese on jicama wraps. Two tacos about 180 kcals. I ate all of it. I don’t know how, but I did 😬🤷‍♀️
  19. I did make sure to get all my protein in, and I ate NO junk, no processed food. I tried to make every single bite as nutritionally dense as possible. I made soups, green berry smoothies, ate a lot of yogurt and cottage cheese, home grown pumpkin and garden veggies, some fish, a little fruit (like 1/2 apple or a mandarin orange.) I was also using lentils and other legumes, as well as still using some protein powder. No grain based carbs, no nut butters, very limited fruit. I reached goal very quickly and have maintained now for a year. I am now plant based and do not even try to count calories any more. I still get about 60 gm of protein a day, but I eat whatever I want now and as much as I want. I am never hungry. Mind you, I get in about 10 servings of fruits/veggies a day, eat a moderate amount of whole grains, plenty of legumes, nuts and seeds, but no sugar, simple carbs, processed or junk food, No soda, no alcohol, no caffeine. Never felt better, have tons of energy, no pain, no sleep apnea. Blood pressure is normal now, and my fatty liver is now normal. Cholesterol plummeted to 152, as did my LDL and triglycerides. Losing over 100 pounds made a world of difference - a whole new life. But going whole food plant based (WFPB) took it to a whole new level of health and wellness. My other fat life seems like a distant dream now - and I'm never going back there! Bottom line - success at lifelong weight loss means making lifelong changes in food choices, habits, exercise patterns, and lifestyle. We must let go of the things that made us fat in the first place, and embrace the new things that will bring us success for the long term. It can be a scary journey, but worth every step!

Im an Aldi-holic but I just recently started shopping at Trader Joes and I'm loving it. Not sure what took me so long when its only 25 minutes away from my house. Anyways, their guac is one of my favorite items. It's seriously addicting and you don't even taste the yogurt in it, and I hate yogurt.

    Puree stage

I didn't mind it. After two weeks on all liquids, eating yogurt and pureed beans was a treat! Some people eat pureed cooked chicken, but that looks gross to me, so I waited until the soft food stage to eat meat. Here are some of the things I ate during the pureed stage: Fat-free, sugar-free yogurt with protein powder Sugar-free pudding with protein powder No sugar added applesauce with protein powder Protein oatmeal (from the BariatricPal store) with protein powder Pureed fat-free refried beans with protein powder, topped with enchilada sauce and Laughing Cow cheese Mashed cauliflower with protein powder, topped with gravy Pureed black bean soup with protein powder
  23. Hi all! I have all my paperwork for what to drink/eat for my clear liquid & full liquid phases. What I don’t have is an idea on how much to drink/eat during full liquids. I know I can have thinned Greek yogurt, thinned applesauce, thinned & strained soups, etc. But, hypothetically, could I sip on soup or eat yogurt all day long as long as I got my protein in? (I wouldn’t actually do that) In the purée phase & beyond I’m told how many ounces of each category to have in a meal. I just need an idea on how much to consume during my full liquid phase. Any advice is much appreciated!
  24. I’m just about a month out and have been given the green light to start testing out solid foods within reason. I was feeling really good during the liquid portion, keeping down every protein shake, not throwing up at all... basically could not wait to have solid foods again. But now, I feel sick all the time. I’m never in the mood for any food or drink, nothing ever sounds good. Things that worked well at the beginning (yogurt, canned chicken) make me feel gross now. When I eat, I almost always feel discomfort. I’m pretty sure I’m dehydrated and wouldn’t be surprised if I had low iron or something else. How about anyone else? Did you have swings like this, and how long did they last?
  25. I mix cocoa powder into one of the ultra-light vanilla yogurts - like Light & Fit or Carbmaster. That'll do the trick as well - plus give you a boost of protein, too!
