    June 2022 surgery buddies

4 weeks post op tomorrow. I’ve lost 31 lbs. this has so far exceeded my wildest expectations that I am blown away. ETA: highest weight ever was when insurance paperwork was submitted at 222. Got down to 209 on 6/8 day of surgery. Came home at 222 from IV fluids. (Can’t make this stuff up) I’m at 191 now and FitTrack says I’m averaging 7/10 of a lb a day. HTH
  2. This doc gives a pretty good layout of the progression that you should expect: I'm not so sure about his books and green smoothies, but his progression is consistent with my experience after 10+ years, though my wife is still somewhat more restricted in volume, so there is a YMMV thing going on there. I can eat about half of what I could before surgery. This is good and bad, in that it is plenty to be able to get the bulk of our nutrition from food (at least with a VSG), but it is also plenty to get into trouble with if you don't learn to eat right - that "gain it all back" threat is a real one if you don't pay attention. Volume can also be highly dependent upon what you are eating, as there are slider foods out there that are virtually unlimited, mainly highly processed junk foods (think chips, pretzels, etc.) One of my takeaways from Dr. Weiner's piece above is if you feel the need to increase your volume over time, try to do it with bulky, low calorie veg as a way of dealing with this. I've been having a salad for lunch most days since early post op, using a couple ounces of leftover meat, bit of cheese and, at the time, maybe 3 oz of salad veg - chopped spinach, pepper, tomato, avo, scallion, etc. My lunches are still just a couple ounces of meat (thats all I need along with all of the other protein in the day) but the veg content is a lot higher now, maybe 7-8 oz. Still pretty moderate in calories, but very high nutritionally. I avoid buffets as they don't provide good value anymore, but can handle them when presented with one. I have never vomited (at least from over eating.)

    Hello, any veterens around?

I will be at 8 years in November. I never made it to goal but that was ok. Had over a 100lb loss. It started to creep slowly back on- about 10 pounds a year or so. I started to watch more last year and am back to the lowest post-surgical weight so I am very happy with that. I may try for another 25 pounds or so. I haven't decided yet :).

Getting ready to have this surgery

This is so me! I had spent most of my life not the least bit interested in food. 10 years ago when the weight started creeping up, I said the hell with it and started eating everything in sight. Since surgery, almost a month ago, I have no appetite and I feel like my old self again. I had completely messed up my metabolism with the yo-yo dieting and exercise. This surgery has been a blessing.
  6. I started my 6 month supervised diet with my PCP back in November and finished that mid-April. I had my first appointment at my surgeon's office 5/10. I went to my endoscopy pre-op appointment on 7/1 and mentioned I still needed to speak with the psychologist. They got in contact with him and he called me that afternoon. After a brief conversation, he said I passed and it sounded like I was ready for this. So now I have my endoscopy on Friday and within two weeks or so after that they should hopefully call me with a surgery date. I'm so excited. It's getting real! A small part of me is a little bummed though because on Saturday my captain told me he would be moving me back into the control room soon on a certain sergeants off days so now that's going to happen and then I'm going to turn around and be out for four weeks! I know Cap will work with me and knows why I'll be out, but I hate to inconvenience him too and I LOVE running the control room. It'll be worth it in the end though! Terrified

no, you won't - not with that large calorie deficit. As others have said, you'll hit stalls along the way and your weight may fluctuate occasionally by a pound or two, but if you stick to your clinic's plan, your trend will be down. I didn't start regaining until I hit my lowest weight (in the 130s), but it's VERY common to gain 10-20 lbs after hitting your lowest weight (the rebound gain is usually in year 2 or 3). But while you're in the losing phase, as long as you're sticking to your plan, no. You'll continue to lose.
  8. Hello. I'm in Southern Illinois, 47. I am also in the early stages. I have had my initial consult with the surgeon. On July 11 (My b'day) I have an appt with the nutritionist and getting an upper Gi. July 19 I get the psych eval. I had done the liquid pre-op diet a couple days so I know what to expect. I am excited but nervous! Let's Go Stl Blues[emoji170][emoji169]

    Bowel Movement after Sleeve

After wls, it took 10 days till i pooped. After plastics is took 13 (a record which in recently tied during and just a little after going on vacay) Pooping regularly is a lot different for me post wls. Before i used to go 2-3 A DAY, post its more like once EVERY 2-3 days. During weight loss phase, i took Benifibre every day with my morning protein shake nowadays (3.5+ years post), i just go with it sans the fibre. But generally if i haven’t gone after 4 days (unless im on vacay), then i’ll take a dose or Miralax; and if that doesn’t work in a day or two, its time for a glycerine suppository. I almost always go after the first suppository. Twice, though it took 2 days of suppositories before i got to see any poop. In any case, from what ive read constipation is just an reality after wls we need to learn how to deal with in our own ways. Good Luck! ❤️
  10. So I'm actually enjoying working out!!! Who knew?? lol I work out twice a day. I do 20 minutes on the treadmill on speed 3.5 (running is 4.0 and I'm not there yet lol ) then I do 15 minutes on the bike at speed 12 (most resistance is 15, but again, not there yet) and 10 minutes doing sit-ups and stomach crunches. Those are the hardest, so I only do 5 minutes of each, but it's a decent start, anyway. I just finished my work out and even though I'm tired, I feel GOOD. Really accomplished and actually have energy. And even though the scale is moving slowly, I see a real difference. My size 26 clothes are too big now and I almost fit into size 24!!!! I haven't been in a size 24 since I did keto a few years ago. The lowest size I got to was 22. I can't wait to hit size 20 and know I did it!!! I beat my keto size and weight and this time it'll stick. This has been the hardest, greatest, most frustrating, wonderful journey I've ever been on lol

    Any July buddies?

I was sleeved in 2019 and now converting to bypass and hernia repair 7/14
  13. All of this! Plus when I pick up my US size 10 pants/medium I can't imagine they will possibly fit, but they DO!
  14. Get a flattering haircut, check out YouTube videos on flattering for you styles. Use a tinted matte eye shadow to disguise any scalp shine if necessary. Then wait it out. My hair loss started around 5 months and ended at 10 months. It doesn’t last forever!
  15. It does look big doesn’t it? Its actually probably about only 2” in diameter….i guess i have itty bitty hands lol. Here’s another one i ate about an hour ago. I had to share it with Mr cuz he was all “you’re going to get sick…you haven’t eaten yet”…ah, he knows me well. Anyway, this one was “Vietnamese Coffee” flavoured. 6/10. But sooooooooooo cute!!!
  16. Hi All - I'm sure this has been asked and answered - but here goes: I was banded in January of 2007 and had pretty good success with it. I lost 140lb - and maintained my weight at around 230-240lbs (I'm 6'2") for many years but after COVID lockdowns my weight started to creep back up to around 260lbs and I developed night coughs/reflux. I went to my surgeon a couple of months ago and he unfilled me which cured the reflux, but I immediately gained 10 lbs. He also did an endoscopy to make sure nothing was wrong. During the endoscopy he discovered I had a hiatal hernia and minor slippage with no erosion but he recommended that I consider removing the band and revision to a gastric sleeve (which I've agreed to do in order to be proactive and avoid any emergency complications if I do develop any erosion or other issues in the future). So my question is - what do I need to know about the differences between the two? I'd managed the band pretty well - occasionally dealing with PB's, sliming, and other fun - inconvenient but nothing I couldn't handle. I've read a couple of comments talking about foaming (or something)? Just want to make sure I'm going into this with my eyes wide open. Thanks in advance for any helpful hints!

    Struggling hard 3 weeks out

A piece of advice I was given from my team because I was having trouble getting 10 oz. of fluid down a day was to try starting my day with a warm drink like tea to see if it helps "prime the pump" for lack of a better phrase. I found it actually did help. I take Zofran for nausea from migraines anyways, but found that Ativan helped calm down the dry heaves.
  19. I just had a Protein Shake that had caffeine. I don’t think I was allowed but I haven’t had coffee in 10 days and was really craving hard. It was the premier Cafe Latte. So good!

    No dumping?

Dumping is totally random but as a rule of thumb I try to avoid foods with more than 10-12 grams of added sugar. It's worked so far! If the portion was really small there mightve not been enough sugar or fat to trigger it. Like for example, I can take a small bite of something sugary and be fine. I've only dumped once after eating French fries and some bread with honey butter..it was likely due to all the fat I was consuming and the sweet butter put me over the edge. Terrible experience because I have an hour and a half card ride after with some friends and had to pretend I wasn't about to die LOL I'd say you're lucky, don't push it or you can I guess if you want to learn your limits although I truly feel it's random and it's best to avoid large quantities of sugar and fats. But im a believer in occasional treats so don't deprive yourself! Glad you could enjoy it. My doctor always says "what worked today, might not work tomorrow. Proceed with caution" Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Backing out

Hey y’all. I scheduled to have my surgery Wednesday. I’ve done great on my 10 day pre op diet. But it seems the closer I get to THE DAY, the more I’m trying to talk myself out of going through with it. What if I’m making a mistake and I don’t recover well? What if I can never enjoy food with my husband again? What if I’m wasting money that could be spent else where? Did anyone else experience this before their procedure?

    June 2022 surgery buddies

Hi, there, NC girl! I have a former neighbor who had VSG done in 10/202- and after bumping down, she is now off her thyroid meds. My bp meds were halved last week after only 2 weeks post op. I have been on them for 21 years! We have been in the triangle for almost 2 years after 29 years in northern Virginia. We like it here, and are building in Emerald Isle because I must be near the ocean in the summer. Good luck to you!⛱

    Any July buddies?

I am scheduled for July 7th. I am now doing my 2 week preop meal. I have one problem, 3 days ago on Thursday 6/23, I came down with covid. Feels more like a head cold or sinus issue. I tried calling my doctor on Friday, but no response. I have been eating per meal requirements and drinking plenty of fluids. I more felt like it was the flu. I did a home test and it showed positive. I am sure they are going to push back my surgery and I am so disappointed, I have been working on this since 2019. Two hospitals , 2 doctors later and change of insurance and not to mention I saved and I am now paying cash. I should o expect the delay to be?? Has anyone had this issue. I know my lungs are clear I am using the spiral meter the think you suck air and hold ball in place. I have been rubbing on Vicks. I have been resting a lot and taking it easy.

    OOTD

It was 2 feels like -1 on Saturday morning at my mum’s (about 100km west of Brisbane) Brrrr. It would have been as cold that night at the restaurant as it’s on top of the Great Dividing Range. The days have been around 10 to 19 Celsius give or take (50-66 Fahrenheit I think) in Brisbane which is cold for us. And we were experiencing those temps through May which was unusual. We often hit 100 Fahrenheit or higher in summer so I feel you in that heat.

Eating and Drinking 30 Minute Rule

Ok so my team had a 20,20,20 rule, chew your food 20 times, wait 20 seconds between each bite and anything you haven’t eaten after 20 mins doesn't get eaten. How far out from surgery are you? Drinking gets easier as you go along. It's easier to drink before food than after so if you are finding yourself being thirsty try having a drink 10 minutes before food but not a big drink but just enough so you aren't thirsty.and a tiny sip to wet your mouth after won't hurt either.
