  1. Well Hi there.

I am a lapsed bander. I'm returning to LBT after about 12 months away and regaining a lot. I have been popping around the forums looking for encouragement and came across a few of your posts & blog entries. WOW I bet you're a great car salesperson. You had some really super things to say and were very positive about them. I'm sold!!

You're so right about starting again slowly and not biting off more then I can chew. I might even be able to call my Dr for a fill after all.

    THANKS, Amanda

  2. The words that your friend shared with you are very inspiring!!!! This journey of regaining our body and the image that we want people to see is all a matter of believing that we are WORTH it. I will have to read that statement a couple of times but I have the point of it planted in my soul.

I am very funny..... I am the funny fat girl that always has a joke to share. Now I just want to be the funny girl. I went to the Pulmonary Doctor and he cleared me. Next week I have the endoscopy exam..... The nutritionist is in October. I have been cleared by everyone else..... Now, I just weight the 6 months as required by insurance.

  3. I'm turning 50 in August, married 25 years in September and have a 19 yo daughter and 14 yo son. Have tried loosing weight three previous time (Jenny Craig, Hypnosis and finally a medically supervised program at Camino Medical Group. In each case lost about 55 pounds and then eventually grain it all back. Hoping this will finally the thing that will stop me from regaining after I lose!

  4. Chancie, I agree fully, I am not ashamed that I had surgery and have told everyone who has asked about my WLS. Most people in the small town I live in have seen me struggle over the years with weightloss and regain. It was time for some type of WLS.

You have done a great job working the sleeve and providing support to all of us who have followed in yours and others footsteps.

    Thanks for all you do.

    Gary

  5. Why must I keep losing and regaining the same 2 pounds. Very frustrating!

  6. Well, here I am starting my vertical sleeve journey. Once I decided to do it, I have been obsessed. I want it more everyday and I want it soon. I am so tired of fighting and losing and regaining and doing it all over again. I'm 51 and I have a 6 year old that I want to be here for until he is well on his own. It's my turn to live.

  7. Past midnight, and it now has been exactly 2 wks since I got back on track again. Regained that honeymoon feeling about my band. Feels good.

  8. I broke 150 lbs today!!!!

150 lbs has been my wall for the past 15 years.  I've dieted down to the low 150s 3 times only to regain what I lost and more.

I am now officially 149.7 lbs as of this morning.  Yay me!

  9. My insurance coverage requires 6 month supervised diet before surgery.. I have done this before but too long ago to get documentation... But have failed miserabley at keeping off many shorter/unsupervised attempts in the past (enough dieting and regain to be a BMI of 46) What if I lose the thirty or so lbs to bring BMI to less than 40... Do I have to regain to get the long term help ( ie band) that I need ? Anyone else been there?
  10. the question of getting too thin is but a temporary issue if at all, the "tightest" you will be is at the begining of surgery over time that will somewhat disipate, furthermore a dietician can help move food around if it that does become a temporary issue, years out the issue is potential regain as with all wls, band, sleeve, RNY,DS. Anorexia is an eating disorder and really is a psychological issue which manifests itself through eating, those 2 issues are vastly different, to address underweight due to anorexia is a psych issue to address underweight due to sleeve is a nutritional/volume/type of food issue, which could easily be temorarily addressed by high calorie liquids. I would not worry about getting underweight do to the sleeve , as that can be addressed with dietary modifications, it is the regain that is very difficult to address after all the wls........ Mila
  11. So I'm thinking about giving up on my insurance fight and just switching to self-pay. I had a slipped band over a year ago. It took 6 months to get the insurance company (Fed BCBS) to finally agree to remove the band but they denied a revision to VSG stating it wasn't medically necessary because my BMI was under 35. I submitted an appeal to the Federal Office of Personnel Management in October for what was supposed to be a 60 day appeal. They "lost" my case and had to start over. Then they closed it because they didn't understand I was asking for a revision and not some sort of random partial gastrectomy. They finally sent it out for review but it sounds like they didn't select a bariatric surgeon because the answer last week came back that it isn't medically necessary because my weight isn't over a 40 BMI. The told my attorney to wait for the report and then call and talk to the nurse but I haven't heard back yet. At this point it's been almost 7 months since I submitted the appeal. This has been going on for so long I'm almost back to my original weight. If I had it to do over again I'd have done a self-pay revision with Dr. Aceves right from the start. Heck, I'd be at my goal weight by now. I just don't have it in me to keep this up. I went ahead and requested a surgery date with Dr. Aceves and put first-class airline tickets on hold on my miles. I can't think what hoops the insurance company would have next. They just don't get that the standard of care for a revision doesn't require you to regain all your weight first. I could go forward with the surgery and then sue them after the fact but I'm not sure it's worth the mental energy after all this. I had some old Microsoft stock lying around and it's almost enough for the surgery. I'm thinking that I'll never miss the money and can just get on with my life. I don't want to self-pay up here because it's really expensive and they don't cover complications like Dr. Aceves does. I could be down there next weekend having this done and just moving on. Thoughts? I could use some additional input... Thanks! Britt
  12. Hello, I am finally ready to go, after a year of jumping through hoops and proving I have been a big guy my whole life. 3/22/12 my life will change forever! I am ready to live life! I do have a question though. I have worked out in the past and consider myself a pretty strong guy, have muscle and I can hold my own when it comes to lifting and moving things. I have heard that you lose alot of your muscle after surgery and have to regain it back later down the road? Is this true? Second question is how long did it take you to get out and start working out? thank you!!!!! Billy

    Can feel every bite???

I think you may be a tad too tight. At least I had a very similar experience when I had too much fill. Everything I tried to eat gave me pain. A very tiny unfill of .2cc fixed it for me. The amount of fill that you have doesn't really matter all that much. I know someone with the same band as me.. she's tight with 2cc's. I'm at a good level with 5.5. You could try drinking something hot (tea, coffee, Water with lemon, hot crystal light) right before eating. This will loosen the band just a little bit and might make it easier to eat. When I was too tight, I even sipped on hot tea during my meal. The key word is sip.. tiny ones. Not big drinks. The danger with being too tight is that you can fall into the habit of eating what's called "slider foods". These things are OK on a very short term basis, but over time, tend to be higher in calorie and less satisfying to fend off hunger, so we eat more of them.. with a result of reduced weight loss.. or even regain. I don't purposely change the amount I eat. I measure out my 3 or 4oz of Protein and 1/2 cup of veggies. I try to eat that and if I get too full before it's gone, then it gets put away for later. If I can finish that amount, then I'm done for at least 20 minutes. IF I am still feeling hungry after 20 minutes I'll let myself have more veggies. However, I eat my veggies fairly plain.. w/o butter or cheese. Usually only some lemon juice and/or salt on mine. Most of the time, the 20 minutes gives my stomach and brain time to communicate and they figure out I really have had enough. Hungry in 2 hours? I make sure I've drank 16 to 32 oz of water (not Powerade zero, crystal light, tea, etc... water). If I haven't, I get on that. Still hungry after water.. then I can have a small high protein snack. Apple and cheese stick is a favorite go-to. Also the small snack size cottage cheese. yup yup. I had the same experience. I hung out on yahoo bandster boards from fall of 08, reading and practicing bandster behavior until banding in March of 09. There's things that you just don't get till you're one of the club. :mad2: You're welcome. I hope it was of some use. Call your docs office and talk to one of the support staff.. see if they want you to come in for a teeny unfill or have some other suggestions to help you over this rough spot. Good luck!!
  14. I am considering VSG surgery. I have actually done all of the pre op tests, and all but the final nutritionist consult. I have been overweight most of my life, and have always been very active. I ran cross country in high school even though I was considerably heavier than anyone elso on the team. I can still run 5k's but not as easily as it was in the past. I have lost 50+ pounds in the past only to regain most of it. In the last 10 years my heaviest was around 280, and my lowest was around 225, and I am 6ft. I now have sleep apnea, arthritis in both knees, and other joints, high cholesterol, a borderline high AIC and I am only 29. I mentioned that I was considering a WLS seminar to my wife and she said she was interested. We both attended a seminar and went to follow up consult appointments. The doctor suggested gastric bypass for her (her BMI is in the upper 40's) and a band or sleeve for my, but strongly suggested the sleeve over the band. Now that my wife has lost some weight by diet and exercise, she is not sure she wants the surgery. I have also lost weight with diet and exercise in the past and I always seem to regain all or most of it. Now with all the issues I am having it is harder and more painful to exercise much. The nutritionist keeps asking if this is the path I want to take, and she thinks I can loose the weight without surgery. She said that I should let my wife have the surgery and with changed eating habits in the house I would loose my weight. She said they had a woman with a BMI of 35 had gastric bypass at their practice and now she has trouble staying above a BMI of 20. I want my wifes decision to be her's and I try not to push her in any direction. I am not sure if I should go ahead and have the surgery even if she does not, or try the diet and exercise route again and see if I can keep it off this time even though I have not really been a healthy weight in 10+ years.
  15. For many years I gained weight strictly due to being lazy and eating poorly. But for the last several years, I have been driving myself crazy because I feel like I have been doing everything I should be doing in terms of eating the right foods (Whole30 and Paleo) and exercising intensely (Obstacle Course Racing and Weight Training) and nothing worked for weight loss. I have often felt like my body and brain were working against my heart and preventing me from achieving what I wanted. In my ongoing research, I recently found another Bariatric Surgeon that post his bariatric videos on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/DrMatthewWeiner I found his Informational Seminar video to be much more informative than any other I attended during my search for a local surgeon. One point in particular is the slide I've attached to this post. The stats he shows in this slide are my exact stats. His explanation here is that to gain 100lbs over a 20-year period, a woman only has to eat an average of 50 additional calories per day. Which is basically nothing. This takes into consideration pregnancy weight gain, weight loss, and weight regain over this time period. He affirms that significant weight gain from such a low number of additional calories means that there is actually something else going on besides just eating more calories than you burn. And as many of us suspect, it is due to hormonal and metabolic changes because of both age and changes that occur from diets you go on. This alone lifted a huge weight off my shoulders. Because I am not crazy after all, my brain and body were working against me. And surgery can help me get back to where I want to be. It further confirms my decision to have this surgery and use it merely as one tool in my arsenal to regain my health! I wanted to share this for anyone else has felt like they were crazy and wondered endlessly why diet and exercised worked from everyone else but you...
  16. He has several reasons. He's worried about malabsorption, regain, & the cost. I've regained every time after loss & he thinks it's drastic measures for an inevitable outcome. Plus I think he's insecure & afraid I'll leave him after I lose. We've been together since we were 18, freshmen in college & I'm 40 now. He has stuck with me through so much. I'm not leaving him. I just want to be happy & healthy. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  17. I need to hear from you . . . how do I turn this around as I've been heading down the wrong road since nine months after banding in Jan. 2010....I had lost 44 lbs by Sept. 2010 and since then have regained 12 lbs...and am at standstill since the first of 2011. I'm wondering the the band is tight enough....but I usually am not hungry until around 5:00 pm each day and sometimes force myself to eat breakfast (to go along with meds I take), then a very light lunch.....and then for dinner, it's difficult to eat, but by that time, I'm really hungry. Plus I have been having a beer or two along the way........other than cutting out the alcohol, what direction should I go???? Your replying will be appreciated.
  18. I incorrectly thought it was the only way. food addiction is mental. You will regain after bariatric surgery if you don't work in it. You can lose weight without bariatric surgery if you work on the addiction. I would recommend seeking counselling for the food addiction before even considering this drastic surgery

    Only down 8pounds !

Hi! So you had the revision so that you wouldn't regain the 75 pounds? Did I understand that correctly? That's smart! Anyway, because you are already at a lower weight, you will lose slower. That seems to be pretty normal. As we get closer to our goal weight, the pounds come off slower. Ex: I was 100 pounds overweight. I lost 50 in a few months. Now i've slowed down to a pound a week. I'm ok with that because i am not gaining! W/o my sleeve i would be gaining by now. What is your goal weight?

    Will I regain the weigth?

Well yes you could regain weight; the surgery only helps you eat smaller portions it does not chose the food you eat. As someone who has had the sleeve and now the bypass I suggest you go with bypass, personally I believe it has better weight keeping off abilities than the sleeve. You shouldn't be hungry in fact I have a hard time consuming my calories as I really don't feel like it. With the sleeve I was never really hungry and I had it for 3 years. If you research how the surgeries are performed the bypass has rerouting that has a major effect on the stomach hunger hormone(I can't explain it would be better to read about it). Good luck in your decision.

    Will I regain the weigth?

@@Canadian lady, You are having surgery in a few weeks? Has your surgeons office given you information about both surgeries and the expectations for post op care? If not I would suggest you ask for this information so you have everything you need to do to prepare yourself for success. Having WLS requires a great amount of work on your part to be successful. The answer to your question about regain is yes, absolutely you can gain all of your weight back down the road if you do not follow the plan. It is important that you are given a plan and speak with a therapist to ensure there is a plan to deal with any current eating habits that got you here. Otherwise it is very possible to eat around your surgery. I would definately reach out to your surgeon asap and ask for their expectations post surgery. I went to a bariatric center of excellence and was given a giant binder that informed me of all the surgery options, their risks, what I could expect afterwards and a food and exercise plan. I believe most surgeons have something similiar. Best of luck on your upcoming surgery!

    Will I regain the weigth?

Everyone has these doubts. Ask yourself: If I don't have the surgery will I continue to gain and/or if I lose what are the odds that I will gain it all back, plus? If I do have the surgery, what is the likelihood I may reach my goal and then gain a little bit back? Under this scenario would the surgery still be worth it to you? Also, as to which surgery to have. That is a decision you need to make with your surgeon. Learn as much as you can so you can make the most informed decision possible. From what I observed almost everyone has an opinion about what is "best", but keep in mind that we are naturally biased based on our own decision and experience. I was sleeved on April 20 of this year and couldn't be happier with my recovery and progress. And, yes, I had the same doubts as you at one time. I was just sure that I was the unique person who would fail. Now, for the first time in years, I am confident and hopeful about regaining my life. Edited: because autocorrect is insane.
  23. Those of us that have re-gained are having good luck with the 5:2 diet. It's also known as intermitant fasting. There is a book. I believe it's called the fast diet. If you look under groups, there are several links to read about how the 5:2 plan works. I ;ve lost 14 of my regain, since July.

    Question for sleevers

That is unfortunate , sorry so many obstacles are in your path. If I was in your place I would keep it bare bones because you've got enough going on. Go right back to basics, advance slowly through the stages Minimum of 60g protein, 64 oz water, minimum of 30 minutes between eating and drinking, drinking and eating Avoid all added sugars and minimalize the consumption simple carbs (less than 50g daily) Strive to always eat proteins first then vegetables Hydration is crucial to weight loss Fiber is crucial to weight loss Vitamins are crucial to your lifestyle Track and stay accountable (pulled these tips from a handouts from support group, the topic was battling regain) Safe journey PS bug the temp NUT anyway. You are important too and the squeaky wheel gets the oil...
