  1. Hi, I had a vsg on 28th Feb 2017. My bmi was about 53 at it's highest, and it's now about 41. I also have autoimmune hypothyroid and PCOS, and I was also worried that I would loose weight even with the vsg. But I am! After the initial quick weighloss over the first few weeks my loss has slowed down to about 1-3lb per week, which is on the slower side. However I'm really happy with my progress and just happy to see the weight dropping off. Plus I think slower weight loss is healthier and better in reducing loose skin, so I'm actually pleased it's a bit slower. In regards to my PCOS, I had a period fairly soon after starting my pre-op diet (first in about 100 days!), then had another one 26 days later! For a fleeting moment I thought the surgery might have cured my PCOS (as I've heard it can instantly cure diabetes), however I'm now on about day 60 of this current cycle, so no instant cure, but I'm sure the weight loss will help. good luck with your surgery, I'm so so happy I went through with mine.

    VSG & autoimmune diseases?

I have both of those as well plus a few more autoimmune diseases just for fun. [emoji854] My Menieres has been a lot worse since my surgery 6 weeks ago. I'm hoping when I lose weight my balance will be better! [emoji1] How are you doing? I'm hoping I'll have hair someday, but at this point more is falling out. Best wishes! [emoji255]

    Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis and GS surgery

I am SO glad to hear your liver is better!!!! Wow! That's a blessing for sure! As for my liver.... my enzymes were elevated, sending me to a specialist. Blood work showed the score for probable NASH, then I was scheduled for biopsy... where they go in through the jugular. Results were NASH with no fibrosis, cirrhosis, nor portal hypertension. I was put on prednisone (was on it a horrid 3 months) because my specialist thought I had/have autoimmune hepatitis, though the biopsy results showed NO interface hepatitis. I really want a second opinion on that as none of it made sense due to the lack of the defining factor (interface hepatitis) and any antibodies in my blood work. There was also no indication whatsoever in the biopsy results that my liver was enlarged and, in fact, said it was normal size. I'm assuming, then, that things will go well. I did read one research paper that said (and I knew this already) that rapid weight loss can cause inflammation, etc. in the liver. One risk vs another, I suppose. What you said makes perfect sense to me, and unless they see something different during the surgery I'm sure everything will be fine. Thank you so much for the info, Patient, and I'm so so SO glad the surgery helped with your liver issues!

    Kaiser Hawaii

Aloha Wahine! I am on Maui and have done orientation and now have the GB orientation in May. My question is about loosing weight before surgery. I am a BMI of 38 with chronic pain and autoimmune disease. I am going on a trip in a month so really being restrictive on my diet as we all know those mainland flights are really uncomfortable when you are fat. I already walk 10,000 to 18,000 steps daily with work. Can you loose too much weight and not qualify? I do have a documented seven year history of obesity and up and down weight with Kaiser. Any info would be super helpful.
  5. Anyone else on Humira, Methotrexate & steroids? I'm having surgery 5/31 & I have to come off all my meds 2 weeks prior. I'm wondering how long the doctor will keep me off them.
  6. I have been hypothyroid for more than a decade. Once you are hypothyroid, you typically have the disease for life. As far as the results of my weight loss surgery are concerned, I have more energy than ever. I no longer feel sluggish or overly tired. By the way, I also suffered from autoimmune idiopathic hives for many years, but the problem resolved within months after bariatric surgery.

It wouldn't be bald per say because women never lose the hairline like me. But yes it could get very thin. That being said, everything I have read regarding it is the hair comes back after while. My wife suffers from 2 different autoimmune diseases and her hair is getting to the point she needs a wig, so I hear ya. Keep up a positive attitude!
  8. Biotin melt tabs from sams club are amazing and I have patch as well I had bad hair loss since I started regrouping my eating lifestyle change 8 months before surgery and using 1 melt tab daily of 5000 mcg I barely have a hair shed at all I'm 5 days post op today. My primary care made me start them due to an autoimmune disease and I'm so glad he did. Melt tabs have a fruity taste and dissolve fast one a day.
  9. Has your WLS helped with autoimmune disease or endocrine issues? I am asking specifically about Hashimotos, adrenal insufficiency, hypothyroid?
  10. Oh my gosh I have so much to say about this! You're going to feel that way and it's not going to go away necessarily anytime soon. There are so many factors at play right now. You're going to mourn the loss of your old life comma the food used to eat, the drinks you used to drink, even the way you interacted socially with others. You're also dealing with massive hormone dumps for the fat loss. This is also very normal and I promise you it will get better over time! I am almost a year out I had surgery April 29th of last year. The first few weeks actually did not bother me it was after that after the puree stage and the soft foods and and all of that comma that I really started to have issues with morning my old life. Once I finally started going out to social events or going out to dinner with my family or my husband, that's when it really started to bother me. The best thing I can tell you to try to counteract that is go look in a mirror. You are not going to see it a lot yet but in two or three months you're going to see such huge changes in yourself that it lessens the blow. Even to this day, almost a year out from surgery I still get low comma I still get depressed and I wish I could eat that bowl of spaghetti or drink that glass of red wine but when I get upset and I get frustrated I look in the mirror or I go and I take a picture and I use an app to put a picture of Me 3 days before surgery next to what I look like at this exact moment and the difference is shocking. And it's shocking enough that I suddenly don't really miss it all that much anymore. The biggest thing for me is how much pain I was in prior to surgery. I have several autoimmune diseases and I live the last three years of my life on immunosuppressive drugs, Tramadol, Tizanidine, various other medications related to pain relief and management of my diseases. When I could get up and attempt to function in my life it was through the use of insane amounts of coffee period and that was only to be able to get me out of bed to be able to get me to work so that I didn't lose my job. I had literally nothing left at the end of the day for my husband or for my beautiful little boy. So whenever you get down and whenever this just starts to feel like it's too much remember what it used to be like remember how far you've already come and how much further you're going to go. Remember that this is totally worth it in the end. oh my gosh I have so much to say about this! You're going to feel that way and its not going to go away necessarily anytime soon. There are so many factors at play right now. Your going to mourn the loss of your old life, the food used to eat, the drinks he used to drink, even the way you interacted socially with others. 11. 2 weeks and 6 pounds less- post surgery, I'm eating solids, but still sticking with premier protein for breakfast and lunch most work days, consuming 1x Centrum multivitamin daily... I seem to have an adverse effect, severe dermatitis... Small bumpy welts where my bandages were and now spreading to all softer skin, including around my lower stomach, chest and arms. Anyone else have this issue? I'm reaching out to my surgeon, as I'm concerned if I have an autoimmune issue. I've never been allergic to anything. Sent from my Nexus 10 using the BariatricPal App
  12. Hi! I am new to this forum and hoping to get some opinions from all of you. I am 44 years old and have an autoimmune thyroid disease called Hashimotos thyroiditis. I have a very hard time losing weight I can't seem to get under 200 lbs no matter what. I usually follow an autoimmune protocol diet which is very strict due to my disease. No diary, Beans, nuts, seeds, nightshades, grains, gluten processed foods of any kind. The list goes on! This is because my immune system is eating my thyroid and I have a host of other issues stemming from this disease including inflammation. I am seriously considering banding because I have grown tired of the weight loss failure. I currently weigh 217 lbs and would like to get to a healthy weight which would be about 155 or 160. My Bmi is 33.8 and everyone tries to say I am not heavy enough. But I hold my weight well under clothes lol. I am too heavy! And my joints are screaming and I am plain uncomfortable. I just want to feel healthy again. I have not been under 200 lbs since before my kids were born my oldest is 22 almost 23 and I have 2 grand babies! I just want to know what you all think. Thanks! Autoimmune disorders and wls

I have "non-specific connective tissue autoimmune disase", i.e. they don't know exactly what's wrong with me. I take Methotrexate, Celebrex and Lyrica. You can't take immune suppressants before or directly after surgery because it would inhibit your healing. But my surgeon said it was fine to resume my Lyrica the next day after surgery. I did have to wait 2 weeks to restart the Celebrex (NSAID.) I had no problems. Following the diet and dropping weight makes you feel so much better, it means less muscle and joint pain for me, tho I still have flare ups. It is now known that fat creates inflammation, which is a major factor in my level of pain. I'm getting back on track after regaining 30 lbs, and I have noticed that the extra pounds creates SO much more joint pain than what I was feeling before regaining. I really think that weight loss (fat loss) will help just about anybody's overall health including inflammatory autoimmune diseases.

  18. Hello Everyone! I started my journey to get the gastric sleeve. I have to do 4 months of classes. My questions is I have RA and fibro and scared of the possible complications due to my conditions has anyone had any complications and not able to take meds? I'm on a fb support group and get freaked out. I was sure this is what I wanted until I started reading some of the complains. Horrible acid reflux, nausea, vomiting, losing teeth and so on. So I'm a bit freaked out at the moment. Lol, any info from anyone with a autoimmune disease will be helpful. Thanks everyone!

    Scared and Excited.....

Tomorrow is my big day. I'm so scared about complications but at the same time I am excited about a new life. One where I can keep up and play with my two year old son, where my autoimmune disease isn't triggered all of the time and where I don't have to where clothes that I feel help me to "hide". I don't where makeup or jewelry or get my hair done because I just want to hide from everyone, to blur in to the background. I don't want to be like that anymore. I don't want my family to have to say "I know you don't want to be in the picture". I hate that person. I'm glad to be getting the chance to show the world that I am a person and I don't have to hide anymore. But that scared feeling still lies there. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Sleeve and lupus?

Hi all! I'm getting sleeved tomorrow and I'm nervous. My rheumatologist, primary care doctor, and surgeon are all on board with me having the sleeve done. I'm nervous that I'm going to go into a lupus flare or have complications from it. Does anyone here have an autoimmune disease and also had the sleeve done that would like to share their story?? Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  21. Hi Broove. I had a kidney transplant in June 2014. I lost kidney function due to an autoimmune disorder. I was on dialysis for 2.5 years. The last 9 months I switched from hemodialysis to peritoneal dialysis. That is when my weight gain started. My transplant doctor is the one that put me on the road to bariatric surgery. I am having surgery in January. I can't speak to life after sleeve yet but I have been down the dialysis road. Best of luck. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  22. Hi all, My surgery is in a few hours and I have a lot of feelings. I'm doing it just in case I need a kidney transplant, and my doctor is hopeful that it would actually get me off of dialysis. I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder this summer that damaged my kidneys. I'd just like people to share a few ways this surgery has positively impacted their health. I need some positive vibes this morning. I think this is the right decision, but it's still tough. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  23. I have a few autoimmune diseases as well as gastroparesis. I was told before my surgery that I would get better if I proceeded. Since, I am unable to eat or drink anything without vomiting. I've now learned from one doctor that I should have NEVER had the surgery with my gastroparesis. Anyone else with gastroparesis? How are you able to manage your symptoms? MARCH SLEEVERS

@@vccaan Yes, this autoimmune thyroid disease can really make life difficult. I am sorry to hear about the 2 large nodules. Hope that you get this resolved soon and with success! Congratulations on your great weight loss! Well done!!! Yes, the meds can throw a curve ball, I am glad that you found out the cause. With my med, I always put it on my bedside table, so I take it first thing in the morning when I wake up. The rest stays in the fridge, but I cut out 4 blisters, and each night I put one in a tiny dish on my bedside table. This way, I don't forget. 2 doses adjustments ago, my med was halved, and even though my blood tests came back "normal", I was in the higher end of TSH, and I really noticed the difference! I did not feel too good. So the dose was increased, and now I am back to hyper symptoms ..... Another dose adjustment now ..... I am glad you are back on track! Christmas can be such a busy time ..... When my med was halved, my weight loss stopped. Now my scales are still not budging, but at least I am shrinking. Best Wishes to you
