  1. I've been wondering about something. When I look at my surgery progress under my picture, I have my starting weight (388) as what I weighed the day of my initial surgery. BUT, my highest weight was 421, which is what I weighed when I started the bariatric surgery process. I lost 33 pounds in order to be approved for the surgery, then qualified and had it right away. So should I put my starting weight as my highest weight, or keep it at the weight I was at on surgery day? How do you guys do it?
  2. SleeveToBypass2023

Almost 7 weeks post op and already failed

I know exactly how you feel. I had the sleeve and did great. Had to have a revision due to complications and had a bypass. In both surgeries, I never ever lost physical hunger, nevermind head hunger. I still have head hunger to this day. And yes, I have times (not a whole day, but just certain times during a day here and there) where I eat something I definitely shouldn't be eating. Have I over-eaten? Yep. Have I eaten things I shouldn't? Yep. Am I failing my surgery? NOPE. I still feel some guilt when I "cheat" but you know what? It happens. Life happens. The point is you have to recognize that you had a slip, it is what it is, tomorrow is another day to start over and get it right. There's all kinds of online support groups, online therapy, and bariatric forums (like this one) that can offer help, support, suggestions, and accountability. You can do this, just remember WHY you did the surgery. Remember why you wanted it and why you jumped through all the hoops to get it.
  3. I had to add the laughing emoji on your last comment because that bullshit button is awesome. If only we all had one on our foreheads that other people could press as needed... (although we would probably not appreciate it so much in the moment, I'm thinking). Good luck on your trip and remember to give yourself grace as you navigate a totally new life experience of being a bariatric patient in a different environment, with family, during the holidays. It's not going to go perfectly, and that's fine.
  4. I didn't know Dr. Weiner had a support group! I've seen his videos on YouTube and I think he is awesome. He seems to understand and genuinely care about bariatric patients. I can imagine that his support group would be excellent for someone who doesn't have access to a local support group or therapist. This is really good info for the people on this forum.
  5. It sounds like your resources are limited for getting support in your local area, so I wanted to recommend looking into the Pound of Cure nutrition program, which is run by Dr. Weiner in Tucson, AZ (he also has a couple books and YouTube channel with bariatric educational information). It's $49 a month and allows you to attend unlimited online support groups with their dietician and peer leaders, as well as a few sessions per month that are run by Dr. Weiner. I've subscribed for a while and go to at least a few of the groups per month as my schedule permits. Many times there will just be a few people in the group and you can really get a chance to ask your questions and get some good advice. Just for example, there's a group for the first year post-op, for emotional eating and stress management, and even one for surviving the holidays and travel. They've been in this business for many years and I'm betting they could think of dozens of patients who felt exactly how you do right now but went on to be successful.

Movement! Did you MOVE today?! Great!

This may be a good advice for other people this has stuck with me for a long time. In another bariatric group this lady on zoom made a statement "Hunger is not an emergency" this resonated with me. Hunger really is not an emergency for the past 3 plus months I fast from 8pm to 12pm about 16 hours. Once you mentally prepare yourself it's a breeze. I tell myself hunger is not an emergency and there we go!
  7. As we know MOVEMENT can be an important aspect of the bariatric journey! I credit a lot of my rapid weight loss to the fact that I love movement. Movement is freeing, it helps the mental as well as the physical. What movement do you do daily? What movement do you enjoy? How often? Post pics if you like!
  8. Hi everyone, Has anyone in the UK managed to get Mounjaro from any of the companies prescribing it after sleeve? The ones I’ve looked at say prev bariatric surgery means you’re not suitable. I’m 6 years out and finding it harder to keep the cravings at bay so weight has crept up a bit. My BMI is 35 so would qualify from that point of view.

    Struggling 😔

It's so good to have the bariatric community ...a group of "your people" who get it! This is a forever journey with many struggles. 😌

Report Your WINS ..What is your today's win??🥇

@Chatterboxdea when I was newly post op someone in the bariatric community told me to keep some old cloths! I am so glad I did. When you've been obese for so long your mind plays tricks with you. Psychologically I think I have not came far but when I put on old cloths it is a testament. I also have to take many before and after photos.

The New Found MALE GAZE! I'm Pissed 🙄🙄🙄

This is a thread I started about the MALE GAZE and the bariatric experience, a question was asked about a Female Gaze and it was answered. Public forum or not if one is asked about their experience with the female species and it's answered then it is what it is. I welcome all responses but it won't be a continuum back and forth. I'm already bored 😂😂😂. "You just say that word "Women" and I'm already yawning (women don't REV up my nether regions 😂)....back to the MALE GAZE. Now MEN I can talk about them all day! I think I'm going to put on a small dress and go get some MALE GAZES 😂😂😂. Reading some of these post it looks like I will have to get used to the MALE GAZE. So therefore I will go have a little fun. I will have to not be as pissed.

    Food Before and After Photos

My sweet tooth is still alive and well..I guess that's why I never had issues with the protein shakes during this journey. Today I am making a bariatric friendly homemade peanut butter cup/cashew butter cup. So good!
  14. Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:

    • 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk
    • 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer)
    • 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream)
    • 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar
    • 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate)
    • 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken)
    • 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day.
    • 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well.

Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

      NickelChip

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

    Chewable Vitamins vs Swallowing

I didn’t mine my chewable before or after surgery. I only switched because I need more iron. I really like the bariatric advantage calcium chews too. They are like starbursts, 4g carbs each though. Adds up.

    Can't Stop Eating Too Fast!

That's not really an option. It's the NHS so it's just the one appointment through the Bariatric multidisciplinary team. Therapy is really hard to get and the waiting lists are long. Once you get an appointment, you get 12 sessions or about 1 a week for three months.
  17. Yes but apparently in the medical world that is pretty new. I have yet to find a doctor who isn’t a bariatric surgeon who has even heard of it and many surgeons still do not perform it or they are only beginning to.
  18. So not a helpful comment here, but I was also stunned at how much cottage cheese is mentioned/used in the bariatric community! Pre-surgery I was like..."I am going to try it", and I had looked up and saved so many different recipes using it - truth is, I still haven't tried it 🤣
  19. I never In my life heard the Words Cottage Cheese used so much until I entered the Bariatric community. MY GOSH cottage cheese never was what I called a tasty cheesy treat lol. As time went on I see that cottage cheese packs a lot of protein and I have slowly started to enjoy whole Milk cottage cheese. How do you use cottage cheese? What are your recipes? Do you even like cottage cheese? lol it is an aquired taste for sure 😂😂

    Slow Cooker Recipes

I have made this a few times and really like it (without the pasta accompaniment) https://motivation.ie/recipes/dinner-recipes/smoked-paprika-goulash-motivation-recipe/ Some other ideas you might like (all of which I have tested and gone back to again and again); https://www.bariatricfoodcoach.com/lasagna-stew/ - I do not do the pre-slow cooker browning https://skinnyfitalicious.com/crockpot-chicken-shawarma/#recipe - Love, make using chicken breast cubes/strips https://bakingqueen74.co.uk/slow-cooker-spicy-bean-stew/ https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/spiced-carrot-lentil-soup - I don't do the pre-slow cooker step, just bang it all in the slow cooker. I do keep back one carrot though and add it in after blending but sill with about 30 minutes left on the cook so there are some soft bites, I also add a lot more chili but that is to my taste. https://www.bariatricfoodie.com/crockpot-curry-chicken/ - I skip step 1 https://www.bariatricfoodsource.com/blogs/bariatric-friendly-recipes/pureed-chicken-soup-bariatric-phase-3-soft-food - I just put all in the slow cooker and let it do its magic. I have added chili sometimes or other herbs. https://motivation.ie/recipes/lentil-soup-with-crispy-bacon/ - again I just put all the ingredients (skip the oil & bacon) into the slow cooker.
  21. Sometime shoulder pain can be caused from the air that gets trapped from any surgery. I would probably run it by your surgeon though. Especially if you have already passed gas a few times and didn’t feel any relief. I was in the hospital after my bariatric revision surgery for 5 days because I couldn’t pass gas and the pain was so bad I couldn’t take it without the meds they weren’t going to send me home with so I stayed. Post sleeve I had no pain at all. I asked them to switch me to Tylenol the first time they brought the pain meds and I went home early the next day. The difference was all because of trapped air. I think it varies from person to person how much and where it manages to get stuck too. When I finally did pass gas I knew that I needed to keep it up because I instantly felt some relief. It took like 5 or 6 times and then I finally felt soooooo much better. I went home and took half a pain pill while my hubby went out for Tylenol and I didn’t take another. That gas is no fun.

    Egg Drop Soup

Egg Drop was my first take out item post-op but I waited till soft food stage to eat it. My program didn't have a puree phase. I did cheat a bit by using a Vitamix and totally liquifying some soups. But as @Arabesque said, wait until your Bariatric team OKs you for the puree stage then either strain or liquefy. I was also concerned about the amount of fat added to Egg Drop from my local Chinese restaurant but it didn't seem to effect me. It tasted wonderful! You can also make your own using some chicken bouillon or broth and dropping an egg into it. GL and congrats on your surgery!

    August Surgery buddies

I am asking for your help/advice. I am a physical therapist and I underwent my own bariatric surgery in 2022. I am looking to develop a unique bariatric program that provides exercise programs and support to people undergoing rapid weight loss whether from surgery or from medication. If you guys could answer a few questions for me it would be greatly appreciated and would help me build my practice! 1. Did you exercise before surgery? And what was your biggest challenge? 2. Would you have benefited from a preop physical therapy appointment to develop a customize strength training program that took into consideration your current limitations and orthopedic issues. 3. how were you educated on post operative activity and physical restrictions? Would you have liked a week by week guide on what activities you can return to and when? 4. Were you educated on exercises to maintain muscle mass through your first year postoperatively? 5. What kind of exercises did you do postoperatively in the first year? Did you hire a personal trainer? Join the gym? Search online? 6. Did you develop any new or worsening musculoskeletal pain as you were more mobile and your body composition changed? 7. Let me know if you have any other ideas on how having a physical therapist on your bariatric team would have benefited you both before and after surgery. Thanks so much everyone. I may be piloting this program with a few patients. Email me if you’re interested (I’m licensed to treat in N.C.) contact@localpointpt.com

I’m dealing with some pretty scary medical stuff right now (outside of the bariatric stuff) and I had a long drive home late last night alone and scared of what the results will be from a test I’m doing Monday as well as the test itself which I believe is going to be pretty painful. I drove past McDonalds and even though I have no physical hunger, the emotional hunger was very real and I seriously almost caved. I didn’t stop, though. I went home and ate the chili I asked my husband to pull out of the freezer. This morning I got up and did my YOGA and kept right on trucking. I am going to a group fitness class at the gym I wanted to check out with a friend tomorrow. I won’t be able to do anything for five days after this test so I’m really trying to stick to my routine right up to Monday. I may need a little encouragement to get back into my routine, though. I’m pretty nervous that a five day break is going to make me lose my habits. I have to ask to be sure but I think I will be allowed to do everything again starting back Saturday but I was told I have a Princess pass for 5 days. No exercise, housework, nothing. Not even dishes. I was a little excited about that one.
  25. It’s possible whoever told you this meant short term as in the immediate preop and early post op period. Or meant you can supplement/augment protein needs with shakes in addition to food but your bariatric team will move you through food stages and require you eat actual foods.
