  1. Good luck Theresa with getting back to exercising. You might want to start with 30 minutes instead of an hour. Putting too much strain on your muscles and joints might make it diffucult to stick with it. But if 60 minutes feels good, go for it! I know you are not alone with the struggle to exercise and the frustration of a plateau. I myself have to make myself exercise a lot of the time. Once I get going, I tend to enjoy it. I do more than the treadmill so I don't get bored. And boy am I on a plateau. I have not lost an ounce in the past 10 days despite eating well, getting enough Water and exercising eight of those days. The only consolation is that my bodyfat percentage went down a tiny bit. Hang in there! We will get where we want to be some day.
  2. Just yeaterday, my husband and i were commenting about how much work it is to ride horses as two were running past us on the trail. I was going to take riding lessons when I was five, but the instructor said I was too small. Isn't that funny?:smile2: I'm considering riding lessons as a major goal reward and a way to fulfill a childhood dream.
  3. missjoany - You crack me up!! You must be a fun lady to be around. LisaA - Woohoo! You are doing great! keep up the good work. This week Imanaged to finally exercise 6 days. I did two days of dumbbell work. Today was tough with a 2.5-hr hike with my husband. We went longer than we had planned and we are both sore. He's trying to lose weight with me. Tomorrow we are hoping to take our boat out for a relaxing sail.

mytrice - hang in there. I hope your port isn't flipped, and if it is, hopefully they can fix it with minimal discomfort. I had my second fill today. I don't feel like I have lost much weight, especially when I read some of the big weight losses posted by this group. They told me I'm at 20% loss and the graph shows I am just a smidge above average for the time frame. Yea! It is coming off slowly, but it's coming off.:frown: They figure I need at least 1 or two more fills.
  5. missjoany - Good luck with your port. I wish you the best! I'd like to suggest you not use the weights while walking on the treadmill for a couple reasons. The first is to decrease the stress on your joints, especially the knee that is bothering you. I read somewhere that the impact felt by the body for each pound on the body is multiplied by some factor (I don't remember what the factor is). The second is so you can focus on your form so you might be able to find a way to decrease the stress on your knee. Play around with speed and incline. I find that if I decrease the speed and increase the incline, I have less stress on my knees and shins. A friend of mine is more comfortable increasing speed and decreasing incline. Another thing is to stretch when you are done with your walk. I'm bad about this one. I am not a kinesiologist or physical therapist, so take this advice with a grain of salt. Just letting you know what I have experimented with. You are better off getting a heart rate monitor with a chest strap than using the built in heart rate monitor. My treadmill came with a chest strap and handle sensors. It is not recommended to put your hands on the handles because you do not get as much workout. I like having my Polar HRM because I can use it for every type of exercise, not just limited to the treadmill. I know you are limited to the treadmill for now, but eventually you will be feeling stronger and fitter to do other activities. Today I did Week 1 Day 4 of Power 90. My tummy gets in the way of completing motions and makes it hard to breathe. I'm looking forward to feeling that improve.
  6. I was recentlu in JCPenny and I was surprised at the variety of exercise clothes they had and how good the prices are. Many were on sale at the time.

Which program do you use to track

I use DietPower. It has extensive food and exercise libraries that you can add to. It has many other features. You can download a free 15-day full feature trial. The cost is $35-40. Another free tracker is SparkPeople.
  8. My stepdad had RNY GB two years ago. He is diabetic so that was the best option for him. I was banded in September. Even after seeing the spectacular results my stepdad had, my family encouraged me to not have bypass because I don't have a medical reason to justify the more invasive surgery. It will take me longer to lose the weight with the band than if I had bypass and I'm fine with that. Hopefully the slower weight loss will mean fewer skin issues. I wish you the best of luck with your decision. It is a very personal decision. Just make sure you are as informed as possible and that the doctor is expressing what is best for you, not what is best for him/her. You may even want to ask bluntly, "what is best for ME given my current health and health history and WHY?"

Take a look at percentage of excess weight loss (%EWL) to see how you are doing. If you started with a lower BMI or pounds of excess weight, you may be losing as much by percentage even if not by pounds. Example: I have lost 16 pounds which equates to19%EWL. That is the method my doctor and the studies track it. Try chicken tenders. They are a strip of the breast that is really tender (hence the name:wink2:). They cook quickly and are moist. Fish also works well if you're okay with seafood.
  10. 3 miles is 3 times better than 1  As for treadmills, you need to first decide what price range you are willing to spend and what features are important to you. You can get a pretty darn good treadmill for $1000-1200. Mine was in that price range and has a good range of speed and incline, easy to adjust while using and has a built in fan. Some now com with built in TVs/monitors. I got mine four years ago and it has many miles on it and is still working like a champ.

My port is located just to the right of my belly button. The port site is still a bit tender, but not painful. I cannot wear pants with a tight waist. I used how much I could bend over as a gauge of how well I was healing. My biggest issue ended up being able to sleep on my side without port site pain. I finally can do that comfortably. Each person is going to heal at a different rate and the location of the port and the "attachment" method seem to also be factors.

Stateofzen, there is absolutely no way they have not noticed a 60lb weight loss. I'd say they are being polite by not saying anything; especially if they are men. Congratulations, your efforts are paying off! Everyone, I am proud to say I am in onederland. I hit it last Thursday, but knew I would pop back up with the way I fluctuate and sure enough I did. I'm now confident I will stay below at this point.

No need to be nervous, but hard not to be the first time:unsure:. I had mine last week and it was rather uneventful. Lots of questions. The actual fill process, including numbing, took about 5-7 minutes.
  15. One time is better than none. Congratulate yourself for getting back to it and acknowledging this is a trouble area for you.

Post WLS, my stomach growling/gurgling seems to be more intense. Is anyone else experiencing this?
  17. Try SierraTradingPost.com for closeout athletic wear and casual clothing. I have had good luck at outlet stores such as Nike, Adidas, Izod and The North Face..I do not always have luck finding XL, but I have found some good items. I like to layer.

I can definitely feel mine. It is just to the right of my belly button. It is still tender from the scar tissue developing and where the tube goes through the muscle wall...I asked about that in my appointment yesterday. I cannot see it, but I wonder if I eventually will. In a way I wish I do cuz that will mean I've lost a lot of excess fat:wink2:. But really, I don't want to see it.
  20. C25k is Couch to 5k. It's a 9-week program to build-up to being able to jog/run a 5k. It works by doing walking and jogging intervals with the jogging time gradually increasing. P90X is a set of DVDs for a 90-day intense workout. It is too difficult for me at this point so I ordered Power 90, which is the ealier version. P90X = Power 90 Extreme. They are a mix of cardio, plyometric and resitance routines by Beachbody. My Power 90 DVDs should show up today or tomorrow.

    Sept. 2010 Bandsters !!!

Had my first adjustment yesterday. Went from 4.5ml to 5.5 ml. The Fluid was increased because I get hungry too soon later in the day. The PA says some of the hunger is probably due to how much exercise I'm getting. I'm eating 1.5 cup meals instead of 1 cup meals, she that is okay because they are lean and the amount of exercise. So far I am right on target on their progress chart for %EWL. I have to admit that I get hungrier than I'd like, but considering I used to feel this hungry when eating 1800-2000 calories compared to now at 1000-1200 calories, this is a huge improvement.

Think about how rewarded you will be during your journey as you know you have worked hard for the results and know it is all you!! And you are taking the weight off at what is considered a healthy pace and hopefully allows time for skin to adjust (I hope:smile2:). I know how frustrating it is since I'm hungry and have barely lost anything in two weeks. I go in today for my first adjustment. I have no idea what kind of doctors your g/f's had, but my stepdad's bariatric surgeon insists on exercise after bypass surgery. He was 67 years old and could hardly walk without getting winded when he had the surgery, he is now 69 years young, works out at the gym 3 days a week and is becoming an avid windsurfer. If you can't tell. he's my inspiration. :cursing:

    Sept. 2010 Bandsters !!!

I too have not told many about being banded. Being banded was a personal decision made by me, my husband and my mother. I also told my stepdad, my siblings, my in-laws and my two closest friends. And they all know not to tell others I had it done. In my opinion, they are the only people that need to know because I am very close to all of them and I know they care about what is in my best interest. Casual friends and co-workers do not need to know the intimate details of my body. I do not want to deal with the stress of being scrutinized whenever food is around or listening to opinions about the surgery. Because I healed very quickly and started eating soft solids after two weeks, nobody has been the wiser...and I eat lunch with my co-workers. Many don't even know I took the week off to have surgery, and those that do, only know about me getting a hernia repaired.
  24. Neenee, sorry if I worried you, that was not my intention. Your surgery may have been done a bit different than mine or my doctor may be really conservative. I suspect the hernia repair and the way my port is "attached" has something to do with the long activity restriction for me. I've been doing power and incline walking to make up for not being able to do the other activities. I'm not crazy to attempt P90X at this point! I did try a couple P90X routines before surgery and I hurt so bad even though I could hardly do any of it. I just got Power 90, which is the previous version and used to work up to P90X. Keep up your good work and let us know how it goes on Thursday.
  25. WooHoo!! Keep up the good work.
