Lap Band vs Gastric Bypass
Mastino replied to emmasmom60's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My wife had the bypass 2 years ago and I was banded 2 weeks ago. Each procedure requires certain responsibilties for how you will live your life going forward. My wife is very structured and takes her supplements without fail EVERY DAY. She has been successful with the procedure losing 115 pounds. With the bypass surgery, generally, it's get the surgery and move on knowing that there are certain dietary restrictions, sugars carbs etc "dumping" The bypass for me is too rigid a lifestyle from watching my wife's experience. Having the band, there are maintenance issues - fills etc. but dietary intake is a bit more liberal with the exception of carbonated beverages and I like the option of it being reversable should I ever need to remove it. You need to ask yourself honestly, are you prepared to take supplements everyday more than once a day and be restricted by certain foods for the rest of your life for the bypass or get banded and have periodic fills etc. -
2 days since surgery

I am taking it a few hours at a time still. Today I tried the liquid yogurt...a tiny 7 oz bottle. Where in my previous life it would have been snorted in less than a second, it took me 2 visits of about 1/2 hour each time to finish it. What a learning experience lol. Gas-x with each "meal" is helping alot. I continue to have waves of nausea but take a DEEP breath when it happens to make it subside and it has been working. Going out for the first time tomorrow to get some sun. I weighed 306 fully clothed in the doctor's office pre-op and this morning weighed 282 in my robe. I'll take it. -
Try some liquid/firm yogurt.

I started drinking my protein shakes the week before to the get the taste in my mouth so I wouldn't be totally shocked after surgery. My doctor had me on liquids the day before to clear my digestive system but it also had the effect of shrinking my stomach. As a result, I haven't had the hunger pains so far after surgery (2 days).

That makes 3 of us banded on the 18th. While I haven't been hungry, I did vomit early this morning which I attribute to either the pain medication(which I stopped) or excess gas in my digestive system. Alternating walking around the house, stairs, and laying down to move the gas around and out has been helpfull as was taking a gas-x tablet with my Protein drink. Nausea waves come and go but it will be a factor of mobility to keep them subsided I think. Perhaps you are moving pockets of gas through which is creating the hunger senstation. My doctor has allowed the gas-x to reduce the bloated feeling as well as moving to the shakes after 48 hours to feel more satiated. I hope this helps. -
I received my approval today for surgery next Monday 12/18. I went to the nutritionist, counselor and pre-op class and everything went well......but when the call came in today from the Doctor's office regarding my approval the wave of nervousness started because now it's real. I am somewhat concerned about actually going through the surgery but I am mostly concerned about the lifestyle change and my relationship with food. I want this to happen and will follow the directions for post-op recovery but I remain worried about the long haul. I've read many posts on the site and how happy everyone is and I can't tell you how much I am looking forward to the future. Many of you have posted that you have gone through transformations after surgery with your relationship with food and am hoping this happens with me as well. What actually happens after surgery that makes you change (besides the obvious band placement)?
