What made you decide to switch from the band to the sleeve?
Becca replied to Becca's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am actually in a much better place since researching the sleeve and finding the forums. The pain I have is due to my tubing that cracked and broke off and is literally poking all over (depending on where it decides to move for the day). I also have a slip. I am mainly concerned about recovery since I have three kids that are very involved in activities and I work full time. At least that is only a short part of the process. My husband is very supportive, but the rest of my family really isn't. I have just chosen not to speak with them about it anymore and move on. I have the rest of my preop testing today and hopefully I will have a surgery date soon! -
What made you decide to switch from the band to the sleeve?
Becca replied to Becca's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thanks for the responses. I am planning on having the revision surgery. Right now, I am just doing the all the preop testing the insurance requires. I have serious problems with my band, so my doctor is pretty certain I will be approved. What I meant by being judged is people asking, "Why don't you just take your band out and do Weight Watchers, Quick Weight Loss, or get a personal trainer?" Ummmm....if that worked I wouldn't have had the band to begin with! They don't understand the battle I have had with my weight since Kindergarten. Any time I have lost the weight, I never kept it off. I have even regained 25 pounds with the band that I lost the first year. It just helps to hear what others have experienced, as I don't know anyone personally who has been through this. The only friend I know with a lapband did very well and has kept her restriction. I am so happy for her, but I know that will never happen for me with the band. Thanks again everyone! I really do love this forum! -

I hope that I have a speedy recovery like so many of you! -
Congrats on your sleeve! I am a mother of three and a little stressed about recovering and taking care of them. I will be sleeved as soon as the preop testing is through and insurance approves. I have horrible pain from my lapband and I look forward to the day I can join you in having it gone! If you ever need anyone to talk to I am here! Hope your recovery goes smoothly.

Good news! I hope my approval is just as fast! Did they say how long you would have to wait to have you surgery?:glare:

YOU ARE WORTH IT!!!! My husband was supportive at first, until the band failed! That's when I started hearing comments of how much money I wasted. And in all fairness, it is true. If you are a self pay, please don't get a band. The medical bills are huge without insurance coverage (or exclusions like I had). Don't give up! In the long run, YOU have to decide to do this for YOU. I am so glad you are researching so that you don't have to go through the pain and dissappointment I have had with my band failure. Don't give up on this!

Change to sleeve after ins. approval for band?
Becca replied to MrsLD's topic in Insurance & Financing
I would at least try and see if you can get the sleeve (speaking from a patient who did not have success with my band and is in the process of revision). Some insurances still consider the sleeve "exploratory" so you need to get a copy of your insurance details for bariatric surgery. Good luck! -

Lap band or Gastric Sleeve???
Becca replied to Mommato4's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I will just tell you my experience with the band and let you decide! My band never held the fluid when I had a fill. The fill would last about a week and then gradually go away. I did manage to lose 70 pounds at one time, but put back on 25 when the band stopped giving me any restriction. I gave up and didn't want to deal with it anymore. About two weeks ago, I got a sharp pain in my side that kept me from walking. I had to go to the ER. They thought I had appendicitis. They ran some scans and found that my lapband tubing had broken off and the sharp edge was poking me in the side. They also said my port had flipped. It hurts like HELL 24-7! When I went to the doctor he found that my band had slipped and that is why I had no restriction. Now my port site also hurts like crazy as the broken tubing is pulling on it. I have to wait for insurance to approve everything and my doctor thinks the sleeve is a better option (this is a new doctor,as I was self pay for the band). It is so embarrassing having to explain everything at work since I am missing all of these days for preop testing. I am sure they are thinking, "Just stop eating." I wish it was that easy! Fills are a pain as well (unless you enjoy sharp needles going into your stomach). Hope this helps you with with your options. :001_tongue: -
Congrats!!!! Let us know how you are doing!!! I can't wait to join you in December. :cursing::crying::crying:

My doc says my band has to go since it has slipped and wants me to have the sleeve. He is scheduling me for an endoscope test. Can anyone give me info on this test? Does everyone have to have it or is it just for revisions? Also, is the test painful and how long does it last? Just wondering what to expect since I have three kids. :confused1:Thanks!

Hello Everyone! I am unexpectedly going to have the sleeve soon due to a lapband slip. I was wondering how long you were down so I can have an idea for how much work I will miss. I am a little nervous about telling my boss, but my doc says the band needs to come out. Thanks for any advice!
