Should we force our children to eat healthy foods?
tmx000 replied to Birinak's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have 2 children one 10 the other 11 the 11 year old will eat anything but prefers vegetables only, and the 10 year old will only eat it if it can be microwaved or fried as long as it isnt a vegetable, both of my children have been exposed to many different types and encouraged to eat healthy foods. IMHO i feel that feeding your children a well balanced diet is important and a parental DUTY. In order to accomplish this I start at the grocery store and buy only those things that can be incorporated into a ballanced diet. My10 year old will eat anything in the house he likes first, then he will resort to eating other "junk" (as he puts it, this of course only makes me hide a smile). The thing that I have realized it that his stomach is a powerful motivator when it comes to eating and that he wont let himself starve just because we only bought one box of Hot Pockets for him to eat. Question: My 11 year old girl would be a vegetarian if I let her, not out of any kind of moral issue but because it is what she likes, should I cater to her eating perferences when I don't cater to her brother's or do I treat her the same and only offer her the same balanced diet we all eat? -

I was banded on 1/27/11 after losing 49 pounds in my preop diet (I started early because I was just so ready). The surgery went well and my Ins paid out as I expected they would. I was unable to do anything for than drink Water for 2 days after the surgery and when I did try to drink an powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury shake my problems began. Immediately after just a few sips my stomach started heaving and "explosively rejected" what I had gotten down. For the next day my stomach was clenching and loosening painfully in these 30 second spasms. After a trip to the emergency room where my surgeon took out 3 CCs from the band and caused me to bleed allover due to a hematoma that had developed around the port site I actually started to feel better. I have since had 1cc put back into the band. Now for the real issue, I cant eat any solid Protein, it doesn’t matter how long I chew it, it gets stuck and up it comes. I have a really difficult time not drinking when I eat. Every time I eat I get the stuck feeling after a few bites after I wait a bit it will go away and I can eat almost normally….as long as it is soft or really easy to chew up small. I cant eat any bread……not even a bite. I am losing weight but it is quite miserable. I was hoping that the band would make it somehow less like dieting and more like not really needing to eat more. I find myself eating till my hunger is gone but not being satisfied in my own head with the amount that I have eaten and wanting to eat more. At the time I am writing this my weight loss has slowed and I am struggling with what will be a marathon and not a sprinting diet, I only hope I can somehow gain the will power to push the plate away and just tell myself that I am done eating. I know that some of the things I mentioned are common problems and I knew them going in, like the bread thing, but others are issues that I really didn’t know. After having the band for only a month, I have learned a great deal about myself and why I got to weighed 354 pounds, the real reason is within myself and the fact that I use food like some people use recreational drugs….just to feel good. -
Dr. took out the almost 3 cc that where in the band about 2 days before i had trouble, the medicine worked and I stopped taking it after 2 days. I am still having trouble keeping anything down or eating at all for that matter but I think it is due to me learning how to eat after being banded.

This just happened to me also, I called my doctor and he perscribed an anti spasm drug. He told me it was just because I was too tight due to swelling. Hope it helps.

I was banded on Thursday and havent even been able to drink water well, each tiny sip causes serious pain as it passes throught the band. I cant get the gas pain to go away and am completely miserable. I need help, what can I do?

Nick85, I am on day 11 now and have been miserable the entire time, my doctor has allowed me to drink all the chicken, beef and vegetable broth I want as long at it is low fat and low sodium, I have been drinking the Swanson Chicken Broth, hope it helps. -
Just what do you get for a "program Fee"? I have BCBS Fed and didnt have to have any supervised dieting. Only 5 more days of no real food, I am completely miserable.

I have the same insurance and am having surgery 1/27/2011 and have been approved without the 6 month diet. It may be because I started the process before the first of the year.

Waiting to do something about my health is what lead me to where it is today. Vacation or not, my advice is to do it and dont look back or let future plans of vacations stop you. Who knows what tomorrow will bring, you may not have the money or you may lose motivation, it's best to do it now, IMHO. -
ok, so today is day 3 for me, I drank about 6 cups of 98% fat free low sodium chicken broth last night 6g fat, 40 cals (I WAS told I could have all i wanted), and ate 2 heaping helpings of sugar free jello, really seamed to help, i wasnt too hungry, today on the other hand I feel a gnawing in the pit of my stomack that is distracting me from work. I can do this!

If you cant at least be honest with your husband about this, it is a sad thing....no judgement....just sad. I haven't told my other family members a thing, they know I am going to have surgery, i have just let them believe that it is for my back problems. I just dont want to feel judged by them. My fiance' is very supportive and will be there with me each step along the way, she is my best friend and greatest ally and I wouldn't even try to do this without her. You need to find someone to support you and help you be accountable. Regards, -
you should ask your doctor but I would say that unless you have had problems of this type in the past, you probably dont need to do anything special. I am sure that any hospital would be able to help you if you are in need of emergency care, they have rescources to call if they dont know something and most doctors will ask you about what to do in my experiance when it comes to issues like this. Regards,
