I had 3 surgeries in one (LB, hernia repair and removal of my gallbladder). The pain in your back can also be gas. I suffered greatly with it. Try lots of Gas-X (double what the box says) and try to walk, walk, walk. The pains at your incisions are mostly likely just healing pains. You're only 2 days postop...Give it a few more days. By 7 days you should feel much much better.

Help food suggestion NEEDED!!!!
shutuplena replied to Scorpio's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I lived on eggs - any way except fried. I had yogurt, sugar free pudding and lowfat, soft cheeses. Try some chicken or tuna salad with lite mayo but make sure the chicken or tuna is very finely chopped. -
My surgeon required an upper GI too (endoscopy) along with many other tests as well. It does seem odd that it wouldn't be covered. Is the doctor referring you to a gastro doctor who maybe doesn't participate in your plan? Check with your insurance co and find out what their procedure is. They should cover you.

I don't think my pain was a 5 but I definitely was still very sore 8 days postop. I still had problems bending. I didn't sleep in my bed until 6 days postop-I had to sleep in a recliner. So, don't worry too much about the pain. I was getting what felt like spasms around my port site too and the surgeon told me it was the muscle and my body trying to reject the port and it did go away. So hang in there. Definitely go see the doctor if it gets worse. It seems as though you're doing good with your meals. I was starving 1 wk post op and wanted to eat. So, you're doing a great job. Congratulations.

22 days until LB!!
shutuplena replied to phlyinphebee's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had trouble getting up and down after the surgery and when I got home I realized I couldn't wipe or clean my coolie without hubbies help because I couldn't turn my body in any way that didn't hurt. That only lasted a day I think. Sorry for the overshare! Picking things up weren't a problem, it was just bending or moving. Good Luck! -
HELP-I'm sabotaging myself before 1st fill
shutuplena replied to shutuplena's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Thank you guys so much for all your support and guidance....it really means a lot. But now I feel even worse - Here I was counting the seconds until my first fill, well I walk into the doctor's office this A.M. only to be told "your appt was last Thursday, the office is closed." I CANT BELEIVE I MISSED MY APPT. I was soooo worried about screwing up that I screwed up! Now I have to wait another week. I hope this isn't some type of subconscious sabotage...But reading all your kinds words made me feel a lot better. -
I was banded on 11/14 and I have port pain because my bra rubs against it most of the time. My port is on my right side just under my breast bone. Where is yours?

Anything you would go back and do before surgery if you had a chance to do it over?
shutuplena replied to cathyc113's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you take any medications you might want to buy a pill cutter and/or crusher. Also make sure you have Gas-X on hand just in case of the dreaded gas pains. Don't prepare too many meals because you propab;y won't be that hungry right away. Have sugar free jello, pudding and broth on hand too. Good luck - it's sooooo exciting. -
How many calories?
shutuplena replied to BrwnEydGrl82's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 6 wks post op and I don't count calories. I look at total fat, carbs, sugars and protein. My doc calls it the 5% rule. Total fat, carbs and sugar should be 5% or less, and the protein should be at least 9 gms. It's hard to find good food that falls in that group, but they're there. Just gotta keep looking. -
Hello from New York City!
shutuplena replied to leahbNYC's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hey NYC - I'm on Long Island. I go for my first fill tomorrow (3cc in a 10cc band) so I'll let you know how my goes. I would try the liquids and mushies like someone else suggested. If it doesn't get better I'd call the doctor. -
Lets try and ask this without sounding stupid - I know there are different size bands. I have a 10-12 cc band and I get my first fill on 12/29. Doctor said he fills 3 cc's first time and sees how I do. Besides it being a larger band then others, is there an advantage or disadvantage in the sizes....Is this making any sense? Thanks for your help. Lana

PreOP or not PreOP Diet that is the question
shutuplena replied to househuntress's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't have pre-op diet at all, doctor just told me to eat wisely. He said exactly what you said, it takes a lot longer than 1 wk to shrink the liver. I had no problems whatsoever and they even took out my gallbladder and repaired a hernia at the same time. As far as having the surgery 4 days after seeing the doctor, usually you have to go through a series of tests with different docs to make sure everything else is ok. I am in NY so I can't help you with a doc but good luck whatever you decide. -
Has anyone had their port relocated? My port is on my right side under my breastbone and my bra bangs into it all day. If anyone has had this done could you let me know what kind of a procedure is it - hospital stay or in the office. What is the recovery period like - is it difficult like the surgery itself. Thanks in advance for your responses. Lana

I had the opposite - constipation. As long as you keep drinking lots of water you should be ok. You don't want to dehydrate. If it last more than 2 days I would check with the doctor. Are you drinking with meals? I know that if I forget and I have a sip of water with food - it goes right through me. Good luck.

starting week 2 diet tomorrow
shutuplena replied to tazboobecky's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Someone else just had the same question as you about the shoulder pain. I told her IT'S GAS - and 3 days after my surgery it was the worst pain I ever had. I couldn't breathe and I almost went back the hospital. The only thing that worked was a box of Gas-X strips (the ones that melt in your mouth). My doctor said it was ok. Try it. As far as eating, have to eaten eggs? They worked for me. Also, soft cheeses, yogurt and sugar free pudding. Those are just some I can think of. I know its not easy, but it gets better. Keep up the good work and happy holidays. -
The Damn Shoulder Pain! Help!
shutuplena replied to kaboom 13's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
IT'S GAS.....Trust me - the 3rd day after my surgery I had it so bad I almost went back to the hospital. I took a whole box of Gas-X strips, the ones that melt in your mouth. My doctor said I could take twice as much as the box says I could. It's the only thing that worked. The pain up my shoulder was so bad I couldn't breathe. Try it! Good luck. -
Port Replacement/relocation surgery yesterday
shutuplena replied to Rubyjade's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I 6 wks post op and thinking about asking my surgeon to relocate my port because its so close to my breast bone that my bra leans on it all day and really bothers me. Can you tell me about the surgery and how it compared to the band surgery itself. Thanks -
Thanks to everyone..but one more ?
shutuplena replied to tennis girl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mushy foods allows your stomach to heal after surgery. You shouldn't eat noodles and rice so early on. My doctor advises to eat and drink proteins before you add different foods because you need to get your nutrients first. Don't fill up on bad carbs. They have no nutritional value. -
That's terrific - good for you. Have fun at the party and happy holidays.

A few silly things I have been thinking about
shutuplena replied to beckamarie's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
In my case you can see the port because I had a very thin abdominal wall so it's not hidden by much fat or tissue. My port is very close to the breast bone so my bra digs into it all day. Very annoying, but not enough to regret anything. I think its great that you eat ice. You get plenty of water in that way. I can't imagine there being anything wrong with continuing after surgery. Anyway, that's all they let you have after your surgery for that first day. Good luck and keep asking questions. Lana -
My 3rd day post op was the worst day of my life. I had crippling gas pains that I almost had to go back to the hospital. I took an entire box of the Gas-X strips that melt in your mouth and it helped. My doctor said it was okay to take double of what it says on the box. I share your pain. The next day was alot better.

My doctor said I could take pills as long as they are the same size or smaller than a tylenol tablet. In the beginning I cut all pills in either halves or quarters but now I swallow them whole. I still take chewable vitamins though.
-
Try packing with you some of those small individual servings of unsweetened applesauce, sugar free pudding, and some mashed bananas. I hope you like fruit. These things won't go bad while traveling. Make sure you have plenty of water and good luck. Happy Holidays

I haven't but you should go to an emergency room if you can't reach your doctor and the pain gets worse. It's worth having it checked out then something going wrong. Good Luck.

I don't think you're too old at all. I talk to a woman who goes to my surgeon and she is in her 60's. You want to do this for all the right reasons and your and your husband's fears are justified. It's the fear of the unknown. But since you have this surgery available to you just keep investigating it and asking plenty of questions. Good luck on whatever you chose to do.
