You shouldn't be eating any of that stuff during the mushy stage. Potato chips are not healthy and you need to eat healthy foods, especially in the beginning. If you have to have something crunchy, try toasting a pita and eating that with maybe a little lite peanut butter. Just make sure you chew well.

Hopefully you are seeking professional help for your disease. If not, please do. Nobody should feel so alone. Did your surgeon know you had an eating disorder before you had the surgery? Usually if they do, they shouldn't do it. Please get some help and good luck. Try and enjoy your family and don't be so hard on yourself. You deserve to be happy.

I don't think the band could cause an auto immune disease. If you're body was rejecting the band it wouldn't be affecting your joints. Just make sure you take all the tests to confirm the band is not eroding or slipping and then deal with the other problems after. Be safe.

The thing with being a nurse is that you're trained to help other people - unfortunately you take care of everyone else but yourself. I was banded almost 6 wks ago and I shared a room with a nurse that had the surgery and she said that being a nurse made it worse for her because she knew what its like being on the opposite side of the patient. The fact that you are now seeing a dr. is your first step. It's okay to be scared - the more you read, read, and read some more you'll more excited and less scared. I, too, was best friends with Motrin so I know the feeling. Just keep asking questions everything will be fine. You're on the right track. Congratulations and good luck. -
All the healthy carbs are less than 5% total carbs. Veggies, fruit and that kind of stuff. Atkins doesn't let you eat hardly any carbs. Atkins also lets you eat any proteins you want even if they are fatty. The 5% rule means only very lean meats. The 5% rule is in no way a limiting "diet" it makes sure you eat all the right foods in all food groups.

I think it's great that you can get all that liquid in. Maybe you should squeeze some water in there too. If it's filling you up and you feel good, then keep drinking. That's awesome.

You should protein, protein, protein, and good carbs. My nutritionist gave me the best rule to follow. The 5% rule. Look at the nutrition contents on the box - the total fat should be 5% or less, total carbs 5% or less, and sugars less than 5%. It's hard to find great food that falls within that rule but they're there. If you go over a little that's okay.

Yeah - refried beans are awesome. Also, chick peas (hummus), but be careful about gas, eggs are my life saver. Just not fried.

need a friend that "gets" it

It's not a fail, it's a brave step in the right direction. You can't change what people think or how they feel...Just worry about yourself. They'll come around. -
my dr. wants me to take a multi once a day and calcium 2 times a day. I always forget the calcium. The viactiv chews are great.

Lavette, have you had a fill? If so, maybe that's what's doing it. Maybe it's the soda. My dr said no soda forever...or any other carbonated beverages. The carbonation fizzles in your stomach causing it to expand when you drink. Your dr doesn't care? Can you find someone else?

You've already done the hardest part - realizing you needed this and now going through with it. Don't try so hard to convince others. Most of them (especially ones that never had weight problems) will never understand. Keep doing what you're doing, don't talk about it much and be proud of yourself. You're doing this for you - not anyone else.

I was banded on 11/14 and haven't gone for my first fill yet. I am pretty hungry alot of the time. I feel little restriction but I control myself. I've heard that sometimes it takes 2-3 fills before you feel good restriction. Good luck. You came to the right place for support. This site is great.

I'm glad to hear you're feeling satisfied with the 3 cc. I have a 10cc band too and I go for my first fill on 12/29. Dr says he fills 3cc the first time and waits to see how I do before he does anymore fills. Hopefully I'll feel as good as you. Happy holidays

I think the cheeseburger and the fries are both no-no's. Maybe next time when you know you'll be on the road you could just pack a bag for yourself so you don't get in that situation where you have to eat fast food. You shouldn't have any solids like that yet...Too soon. The first couple of weeks I didn't go anywhere without some sort of mushy food. I know your temptation.

Why do they need 5 years of weight history
shutuplena replied to wendyjoy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't have to give 5 yrs "documented" proof, just me telling them what diets I've tried over the past 5-10 yrs and how much I've lost and gained with each. The reason is to show your ins co that you have made every effort to lose weight on your own and have failed. Meaning now it has become dangerous to your health. -
Thank you so much for your responses, I guess it is the doctor's preference. I'm sure I'll find out soon enough..Thanks again! Lana

10 hours post op and some quick questions!!

Tons and tons of Gas-X worked wonders for me. The leg cramps you shoul keep an eye on. Doctors worry about DVT (especially in overweight people after surgery) and leg cramps or pain could be a symptom. If your dr. said its okay then just keep an eye on it. The protein sounds good to me. Good Luck and keep walking! Lana -

Fortunately, I've never PB'd so I can't help you there, but if it happens again don't worry about calling after hours - your health is more important..Feel better. -

the reason you can't take ibuprofen before surgery is because it is a blood thinner, as are vitamins. the reason they don't want you to take it after surgery is because it can upset the lining of your stomach and cause ulcers. I try not to take it but I do if I have to. -
Hi Jamie, I know someone who used Dr. Geiss but I don't know what the cost was. I used Dr. Garber and I think it was somewhere around $27,000. At least that's what I can tell when the insurance papers come to my house. Have you checked with his office? Lana

I ate like an animal before surgery....After surgery I didn't want to eat for a week, then I felt hungry all the time. It gets better though - you'll just have to hang in there. Good luck.

Hi! I took off work for 2 weeks - the first week I needed it and second I probably could have gone back after the first few days but since my dr. told me not to drive for 2 wks I figured I'd just stay home. Sorry to hear about your lupus. For years the doctors thought I had it too but tests were always inconclusive. I lived on 800mg Motrin a day. My joint pain always floated, sometimes worse then others. I've come off since before the surgery and doctors told me I can't take it anymore. I did take one the other nite though and it was fine. What has your doctor said about the situation. Obviously you need to take something for the joint pain. The good thing is that maybe once you lose the weight the pains won't be so bad. Mine have gotten better. Let us know and good luck.
