Deckedout, Well... I am more like the Wile E Coyote version of a genius rather than the MENSA version.. but I do a whole lot with fitness, nutrition, rehab, exercise, and injuries for my job. Plus I am passionate about it on a personal level (although you would never know it from the way my body looks, LOL. I tell people I am the fittest fat person they will ever meet. I don't know if that is true or not, but I tell people that). In short, I have extensive knowledge both from experience and from my profession about this subject. In my not so secret real life I get paid for this... so feel free to ask me whatever questions you want. Your max HR is 220-41 = 179... Mine is 185 and the highest I have ever been is 183. For you to be that high you will feel like your heart is about to explode. I am quite sure Hamu was in misery on that treadmill. You will likely only be able to keep that HR for a matter of seconds, should you ever get that high. Which I don't recommend in cardio training. If you were lifting weights and doing something like dead lifts, your HR could get that high... but that is a different question. Anyway, for you to be in fat burning you can stay in Zone 2 or in Zone 3. Zone 2 = 90-107 and Zone 3 = 107-125. I am not sure why our numbers were different on the zones though. Your numbers match pretty close to my numbers for Zone 2. I calculated it by taking your Max HR * .5 to get 50%, Max HR *.6 for 60%, and Max HR * .7 to get 70%. Anyway, if you stay between 90-125 for at least 20 minutes then you will be in good shape.

I was a total pig the week before surgery. My doctor did not want me to do that, but I did. I even ate on the plane down to Mexico. I am a pathetically weak person when it comes to food. Even when I know it is bad I just seem to be really self destructive about it. I will also say bikergirl360, if your husband is honest but not rude, that is what I would prefer too.

I am not sure how the challenges work... but I kinda want to stick with you since we started at the same time. I am kinda attached to you, LOL.

I so relate to this thread. I know my body has been going WTF. I lost 10lbs in a week, which has never happened to me before, and then gained 5 the next week. I am settling down now... sort of bouncing between a couple of pounds. Why can't I lose 50 lbs a week for the next 2 weeks and be done? Big sigh....

Wootsie, haven't you ever heard that experience and treachery will beat out youth and beauty every time? HAAAAAAAAAAA -
It sounds like you were running too fast. If you look at HR charts, then your Max HR should be 220-your age (28) = 192 If you look at aerobic zone training.... If you are at 50% of your max, you are in Zone 1, which is recovery. For you, that is 96. It means that if your heart rate is 96 or below, then your body will still recover. If you are in Zone 2, that is considered warm up, and is 50 to 60% of your maximum heart rate, so for you is 96-115, 85% of calories burned in this zone are from fat burning. Zone 3 is general aerobic and is 60-70% of your maximum HR, so for you is 115-134, 85% of your calories are burned from fat. Zone 4 is endurance training and is 70-80% of maximum HR, for you 134-153, and is good for training for races, 50% of calories burned are from fat Zone 5 is called threshold training, and is 80-90% of Max HR, for you 153-173 and is generally used by athletes to improve how well they use Oxygen, only 15% of calories are burned from fat. Over 90% of your heart rate, which is where you were tonight, can usually only be sustained for a very short time. If you are primarily trying to lose fat, I would try to stay on the treadmill for AT LEAST 20 minutes but keep your HR between 96-134. How fast you go doesn't matter as much as keeping your heart rate in the "zone." The reason I say 20 minutes (at least) is because it takes around 12-15 minutes for your body to realize you are doing aerobics and to turn on the "fat burning." So if you go for only 10 minutes and killed yourself then you probably didn't accomplish your goal of burning as much fat as possible. You burned calories, but perhaps not fat.

Audree, I am not going to sign up for South Beach, but I am going to be doing Susan Beach right along with you guys. If I call it a diet I will freak out and probably go eat an entire cake or something. So I am shadowing you but not actually doing diet part.

julestwu, I am doing much better today. I actually felt a lot better by last night. Took it easy yesterday but went jogging today and I feel really good. And I am very motivated to stay following the bandster rules. Thanks.

Very nice idea. You've got some good karma coming to you from somewhere.

Joan, Well I am glad you and Donny had a nice lunch and you got your Christmas presents. Enjoy the feelings of your crush! Maybe when you are ready then he will be ready. -
Audree, I can say that the fear of PBing is well-founded, cuz it sucked. Of course, I have been tempting fate for this whole week I think. I can eat anything as of Saturday, according to my diet plan. My surgeon says I can get a fill as of 6 weeks, but I should wait until I hit a weight loss plateau first. I have started to lose, and am down 9 lbs again. Right now I would say I have a lot less restriction than what my final expectation is. I am eager and anxious to have that restriction feeling like I felt the first week after surgery. On the other hand, I am still losing weight so why rush it. I think I am eating a lot less than I was before. I would say right now I still have to try in order to ensure I don't overeat. It would definitely be possible for me to overeat how I feel now. But, if I eat a normal amount, I am satisfied and not starving. It is like trying and succeeding on a diet without being really miserable, which is a new experience. Secretly, I don't really want to have to try. I want to just not have to think about it. I am not sure that is really a realistic expectation.

I am feeling much better after my PB this morning. I have decided that I am going to keep a plastic bag in my car for a while, just in case. I have also decided that I am not going to eat in the car since when I am in the car I am on the go and I am often trying to hurry so I can concentrate on driving. Thanks again guys for the support this morning, it really helped.

Randi, I read the thread and there were a couple of really good ideas I liked. The first one was put $1 in a jar for every day you work out, and $1 in the jar for every day you do good on your diet and $5 for every pound you lose. Then as you go through your weight loss, you can reward yourself pretty nicely every 10 lbs, or have a great reward at the end! I am getting my jar out now.

I agree about the fill. I also agree with warmmorningsun about expectations. And I think saphrosyne had some really good insight about the mental issues behind eating. I know I have a lot of mental issues around eating and I am only becoming aware of how ingrained they are. Losing a handle on that is always really stressful for me. Once I get the munchies I am not able to control myself around food. That is where the band and fills come in, right? You have a band, don't be afraid to use it! You have made great progress. It is my hope with the band that I will be able to lose weight without being miserable. I guess I don't think that is an unreasonable expectation with the band based on what I have read. Good luck! We are all pulling for you. -
ACE, the American Council on Exercise, did a study and found the average person burns 184 calories per Curves workout. Bummer. But read the whole article because they don't entirely trash Curves. http://www.acefitness.org/getfit/curves.aspx Excerpt: Here are the facts: Curves for Women is the largest fitness franchise on the planet, with more than 8,500 locations worldwide. Since its inception in 1992, more than four million women have joined the 30-minute circuit-training gyms. And it's now the fastest-growing franchise—in any industry—in U.S. history. The Results Researchers found that the total 30-minute Curves workout burns an average of 184 calories, while the 25-minute circuit alone burns 163 calories. "Intensity-wise it's similar to walking four miles an hour [for 30 minutes] on a flat treadmill," says Greany. "So it's a moderate-intensity workout."

You may be becoming or already are a victim of abuse if you: Feel like you have to "walk on eggshells" to keep him from getting angry and are frightened by his temper. <<<<< you Feel you can't live without him. Stop seeing other friends or family, or give up activities you enjoy because he doesn't like them. Are afraid to tell him your worries and feelings about the relationship.<<<<< you Are often compliant because you are afraid to hurt his feelings; and have the urge to "rescue" him when he is troubled. Feel that you are the only one who can help him and that you should try to "reform" him. Find yourself apologizing to yourself or others for your partner's behaviour when you are treated badly. Stop expressing opinions if he doesn't agree with them. <<<< you Stay because you feel he will kill himself if you leave. Believe that his jealousy is a sign of love. Have been kicked, hit, shoved, or had things thrown at you by him when he was jealous or angry. Believe the critical things he says to make you feel bad about yourself. Believe that there is something wrong with you if you don't enjoy the sexual things he makes you do. Believe in the traditional ideas of what a man and a woman should be and do -- that the man makes the decisions and the woman pleases him. <<< him (some people) Have been abused as a child or seen your mother abused <<< you I got this from an abuse website. Even if you are not being abused, your posts directly show the signs of abuse. People familiar with abuse pick up on those things, and point them out. I am not saying you are being abused but I am saying you fit several of the criteria, 5 out of 15 from my count in your posts. Just sayin'...

This thread seems more like a rant than someone who generally wants help or advice. It reminds me of when I was a kid: "It's okay for me to talk bad about my sister, but don't anyone else do it."

bikergirl360 and julestwu, Thanks for the advice! The Soup at Hand is a very good idea. I even had some. I am just SO used to being hungry and becoming practically crazed about it if I don't eat. I am going to go home at lunch and lie down for a bit. People say after PBing to go liquid and to be honest I think eating something sounds totally gross right now. I am very slowly sipping some water but even that is a bit touchy. I am so glad I have this site. Thanks guys.

So I had my first PB this morning. :cry I was late for work and I wanted Starbucks. I didn't have time to make and eat oatmeal but I didn't want to go to Starbuck's on an empty stomach. From this point forward, no good decisions were made.... I decided to make a tortilla with cheese so I could eat it in the car. It's all soft, right? I ate a bean burrito with no PBing a week ago, right? I get into my car and SNARF this tortilla and cheese, as I am in "hurry mode." About 60 seconds after I do this, I feel immediately nauseated and huge pressure and I am like, well HELL. Luckily, there is plastic bag in my car, which I proceeded to reverse eat into. PBing is like every bite I took came out individually. It pretty well sucked. Now I have a headache, my neck hurts and I want to take a nap. What I learned: 1. I need to not forget the rules when I am in a hurry and stressed. 2. I need to make sure I eat what I should be eating and not what is convenient. 3. I need to make the time if I don't have the time. 4. Don't mess with my morning routine. 5. PBing is as gross and unpleasant as everyone says it is 6. I am not used to the fact that I am not going to be starving if I don't get to eat right when I am used to eating. I am used to being so concerned with getting my breakfast so I am not starving by 9am at work. I don't think I need to be quite that concerned anymore but I am not used to that yet.

madden, welcome back! I hope you have a speedy recovery and take lots of rest!

I agree with everyone else's posts so far about the fact we are healing. But I will also add, don't despair! I lost 10lbs then gained 5 when I went to soft foods, but then I have already started losing again. I have only been banded less than 3 weeks. They tell us all that 1-2lbs a week is normal for banding anyway. I think you need some expectation management. It took a while to put on and it isn't going to fly off, no matter how much we want it to. You didn't pay $10-20k to lose it in a week, you paid that to lose it in 2 years.
