    Side Ache Pain??

the port incision is the slowest to heal and remain generally tender/sore the longest. I have read and my personal experience is that the gneral soreness lasted around 4 months post op. It did and does get less and less painful as time goes on. I do not even notice it anymore, but it used to sting when I did exercises even walking and when I started to do abdominal exercises it really let itself be known to me. Today nearly 6 months out, It doesn't even bother me.

    Excercising after the band

Wii has just dance that is great to help you get started. Also, you might want to invest in a a starter band kit to start stretching and toning. There are also some free exercise videos on the internet that you might want to view and try. Good Luck!

    New to Group

Mary, not sure what you are doing, so If I suggest something that you are already doing, please accept my apologies. Are you doing a detailed food and exercise journal? Are you supplementing your protein since you are not getting enough via food?
  4. Unless the box indicates that the serving is with skim milk (or whaterver type of milk), then I would calculate the additional carbs/calories of the milk into the equation.

    When Lapband Goes Wrong

isaviolinist, the concept that you share of intuitive eating, is interesting and as you say, I am sure that many would not agree with it. I am not sure that I agree with it, but one never knows until one has tried or perhaps knows of someone who has tried this concept. Everyone is different in our struggles for food. Thank you for mentioning the book, I will pick it up and read it just because I find this concept intriguing to say the least. As I think about your summary of intuitive eating it does make some level of sense. After all do not the majority of us at one point or another in lives berate ourselves for "falling off the wagon" and then continue to go full tilt at the food until we learn to forgive ourselves and give ourselves the right to jump back on that wagon? Just today at lunch I had ordered some seafood that came with a small toasted piece of garlic toast (I love garlic) and I thought to myself mmmmm, and then I started to argue with myself that it would be bad, it is bread and I have stopped eating bread, the smell of the garlic was starting to win it's battle and I thought to myself, why not just take a bite, get it out of my system and go on with my entree. I took a bite out of the toast chewed and thought, this is what I debated with myself for? It's good, but I'd much rather have my seafood, than this, I placed it to the side of my plate and went on to enjoy my meal without another thought to the toast. No beat up, no negativity, just enjoyment of the meal and mostly the people that I was with.... Msmontelimar, I agree with Isaviolinist and others, you need to start somewhere and find what works for you. A therapist who specializes in eating disorders is a great place to start. I fthe therapist does not work for you, then there are other paths to investigate. I wish you well.
  6. I have gotten myself down to once a week and then in the morning before I go to the surgeon's office which is every 6 weeks now. If I flunctuated, I drove myself crazy trying to figure out what I did wrong, because it could not be something so simple as water gain....

    NSV

you must be on top of the world! what a great feeling!
  8. I did it because of my health, high blood pressure, hips, knees, ankles hurting, Cholesterol sky high and I have three marvelous grandchildren that I want to be around and as I am lucky enough to be able to retire early, there are things that I want to do and to be around to do. My status? My joint pain has all but gone, I am completely off of my high blood pressure med and I am now off my anticholesterol meds as my lab work has dropped significantly and I am hiking mountain trails...and my grand-babies, well we will be getting together this winter and memaw is going to be having a blast with them! I am one and a half years away from retirement and traveling along with starting a new career.

WElcome Elly, Support is a great thing to have! My motivators are my family, friends and even my beloved co-workers who have decided to watch out for me and keep those nasty sweets out of my vision and to be my cheerleaders when I stumble.

    EXERCISING IN OUR 50'S

When I started the exercise thing (I still hate exercise with a passion!) I could hardly walk around the block. I kept at it and exercised, started with walking and then went to the bike and then the elliptical and now I am climbing 5 flights of stairs and somedays more. Trust me on this one...if I can do it so can you! Good luck

    What's your Band's name?

Mine is referred to as shameless. due to his ability to be shameless about hogging the limelight at meal times! After all it is about him

    Is it subjective?

I think Emjay said it all. The rate in which we lose is varied and sometimes it is a matter of experimentation. i just finished uping my carb, fat, protein/caloric intake by 100 calories to get back to losing at my optimal rate for me.

    Update

Congrats Changing and it sounds as if your son is right there with ya!
  16. there is no real standard of pre-op instructions other than what each individual surgeon and / or insurance company has taken to practice. I have found by speaking, reading and observing that there really is no one standardized way and yet all seemed to work just fine for the majority of us. My surgeon had no pre-op diet, my insurance did not require pre-op diet....so I say go with your surgeon's instructions and know that the last 24 hours before surgery is where you need to be careful with your eating habits. And even with that said I am sure there are those out there that will have had a different experience!

    The Sweetheart's Challenge

down 2 lbs this week: 234. staying away from the mountain of chocolate at the nurse's station!
  18. Bruinfan, you should be fine as long as you get back to the liquids 24 hours before your surgery date. some surgeons say a light breakfast and then liquids up until the night and then at least 8-12 hours NPO before surgery. Good luck
  19. hopefully happy, I hear ya! I would be one unhappy camper if my surgeon stopped communicating with me. I think in one of your posts somewhere I read that you have an appointment to see him. May I suggest that you speak with him and ask him what the routine is now that you are post op. Who do you call with questions, concerns, what type of follow up can you expect from him. Most surgeons do not see their patients after surgery until the office visits. With that said, I met with mine before the surgery, while I was doing my pre=op testing and right before the surgery and then on my office visits. During the overnight stay he had an internist check in with me to make sure that I was doing well. Don't waste time with could have, ought to haves, and what should have beens, just gather your questions and meet with him and find out what the expectation is.

    Need Mentor/Buddy

JodiDarlene, take heart, do what you can within your tolerance level for exercise. At least you are open to experimenting in finding a type of exercise that you can do. Its hard to get out of bad habits, but it can be done and you are taking a step in the right direction.
  22. :lol:Laurie, congrats on getting back to basics! JanB, I never thought in my life I would do a happy dance because someone ate and then threw up! Even though it is not what one wants to hear, but for you perhaps this might mean that you don't have to replace your band? Never give up!

When will the weight come off?

donnalemaster, keep it up! even though your scale is holding, you aren't gaining and you've noticed that your clothing is loose as well as your energy level. Indigo girl and nu2ywg I think have the right starting advice. Keep a food and exercise log. Mix up your exercise to your tolerance. I wish you the best of luck!
  25. Hopefully happy, don't despair! When you meet with him ask him what the usual routine is and how often will you be seeing him as opposed to his office staff. It is not unusual to not see your surgeon after surgery, however usually you will have an appointment with him/her within 7 days. Take care.
