    restrictions after surgery

Your port is on your right upper abdominal area and is usually the slowest to heal. This might be the cause of your soreness.

    Need low carb food advice

chicken, pork, turkey. some say the darker meat has more moistness than the white and they can tolerate it better. Some of the higher end deli meats (chicken, turkey), eggs, Tofu are some examples of low carbs, high protein.

    Another Newbie

Welcome and good luck on your journey to the band process. While you are jumping through hoops and waiting for your surgery date, do try to find some mechanism of support as you will need it through out the ups and downs of this process. This forum is a great place to start.
  4. people tolerate different foods. I cannot tolerate beef period. Everything else I have not had a problem with as long as it is moist and fairly tender. The exploration continues on!
  5. :lol:My surgeon had me up and walking every two hours post surgery recovery room and then for the first week walking, walking and then some more walking, by the second week I transitioned to walking and the stationary bike, by week three I added on the elliptical.
  6. There are ups and downs for any type of WLS. It is up to the individual who is going to experience the surgery to do their due diligence and research each procedure so they can determine what they think is best for them. Any type of surgery is serious and everything has complications pre and post surgery. The mind is a powerful thing and can assist any of us with recovery and surviving any stage of the process that we choose. With that said facing our choices realistically and knowing that there are going to be folks who don't have a positive experience or are just going through a tough spell is apart of the process. This site carries all of the above emotions / experiences, the good, bad and ugly which I would rather know about than find out afterwards. Knowledge is power after all. There is a high percentage of any WLS person who will believe that their type of surgery is the only way to go and will tell the world this as fact driven truth in their preception. There will be those with other thought processes and I don't know if there is a "right way" or a "wrong way"...I believe that everyone is different and like others have already said in this thread...it is great that we have choices. We all must make our own and wish each other success. Well we don't have to wish every one success, but WTH! I personally find this site informational and an interesting take on different people's experiences and opinions. I lets me know that I am not alone and that sometimes we can be here for folks too!
  7. I think kll724 and reverie gave some sound advice. walk as tolerated even short walks are better than nothing and can be done through out the day. when you speak to your physician';s office find out when you can start to do more strenuous exercises. With a PE you need to move and walking will do that, when you are sitting or lying down do some leg and feet stretches (flexing the feet up and down). Good luck and let us know how you are doing.

    Just Starting the Process

Kevin, call the customer service number of your insurance. let them know what you have done and ask them to tell you what they require. once you submit everything to the bariatric center, ask them who to contact in their office for an update as to when they send in your paperwork and what their experience is. Follow up with the insurance and learn their process. I took my waiting time form 3-4 weeks to one week processing time. I have BC/BS of CA though. Please continue to do your research. Know that hunger is sometimes felt with the band until you obtain your "sweet spot" . Hope this helps you and I wish the best in this journey you have just begun.

    Been banded since August

Everyone is different. Have you tried keeping a food diary? perhaps that might be a starting point. There are folks on this site that have done "everything" right and still had to fight to loose their weight. Unfortunately, bandsters have to experiment to find out what works best for them. Susie Q. perhaps your stomach might be irritated? Are you eating slower and identifying when you are satiated? Remember we will never know the term "full" as we once knew it to be before being banded. Sounds as if you might be potentially be chewing enough, consistency is what I go by. I know it doesn't sound great, but I loose track of chewing so I go by consistency (applesauce). Ladies, once again I am not there with you and I am only making some suggestions that you might want to consider. Good Luck!

    Port area question

My port site did not really stop being tender/sore until approx 3 weeks ago. During months 3-4 I started to do Abdominal exercises and for me it stung as if a bee had stung me. I skipped the abdominal work out for a week applied a warm pad to the site until the pain eased and then went back a lighter or leser intense abdominal work out. By month 5 there was no soreness/pain.

Any medical people who have had banding

Mark, here we are the medical community reaching out to you. All that has been written here on this posting site is true. It is up to you and I think having seen up close and personal what can go wrong can give us a bit of a stop sign and the hibbie gibbies however, please remember all of the good things that we have seen. Yes,, surgery is a serious thing and should not be taken lightly, do your due diligence and try to find your peace with whatever procedure you choose you know that your mindset will be important in this process. It was worth the risks to me and I'd do it all over again. keep in touch and let us know how you are doing!

    My small NSV

There is no NSV that is too small! These experiences are what keeps us going and lets us know that we are changing even when we can't see those changes it also allows us to laugh at the funny things. Congrats on utilizing the treadmill and gaining better balance!
  16. congrats Gregg! You look MARV-O-LOUS! Bet you feel good about yourself too! Thanks for the update.
  17. Congrats! what an inspiration you are. Bet you feel great about yourself and rightly so!
  18. I have been banded since August 2010. I have not had any sluggishness or debility in being able to learn or understand new concepts as well as researching and developing ways of integrating these ideas into processes as well as teaching these processes to staff. Ghrelin is not only utlized by the stomach that is one of the areas in which it is utilized. I still can hear my stomach growl if I go more than 6 hours between meals. There may be other reasons for your sluggishness, such as are you taking your Vitamins, how are your blood levels (your surgeon/physician can order them), are you consuming enough protein/nutrition? Good luck
  19. Basimah, it will get gradually better, your port site may take the longest for the soreness to completely go away, however, with that said as the others have posted here there are good days and bad days, all in all you have to work the band, it does not work by itself for the most part. This is a time of healing and discovery for you...getting through that liquid phase, however, I assure you your first taste of mushy food will be like heaven and learning your trigger foods to stay away from as well as trying tricks of the trade. The amount that you eat will depend upon you and how you manage yourself, there may be hunger days until you hit the sweet spot or you might be one of the lucky ones whose band has hit the nerve and they don't have hunger issues. Everyone looses at a different pace, be patient. Everyone looses a chunk right off due to the liquid diet and then the weight drop off will slow up as you re-introduce foods to your diet. Cliff N. I eat on smaller plates and when eating out use the bread plate for my main plate. Psychologically it helps me. I sorry to hear that your bariatric team did not assist you in obtaining the answers that you need. This is your body and your journey and you are responsible for what you allow to be done with it. Hind sight info is always so perfect, I know and I am not here to give you a bad time. This site has alot of good information in it and there are other resources that you can access through the internet that are reliable and viable sites to potential give you the information that you are craving so badly. Make sure you take your Vitamins and supplements as outlined in your post op package, this will be important in maintaining a healthy lifestyle while you re-introduce foods back into your diet. To answer the original question, no I have no regrets and still would have made the same choices that I did. Take care, both of you and let us know how you are doing.

    Endoscopy ?

Endoscopys are usually done to determine whether or not you have an ulceration and / or hernia. Also, it may be used to determine the status of an ulcer / hernia if you have been diagnosed with one before.

    Can't drink water

if the ice chips work...you might want to try making some peppermint tea ice chips. The peppermint will assist your stomach into settling down a bit. It took three days of small sips of peppermint tea at room temp before my stomach would tolerate anything. I still remain fill free 5 months after surgery.

    Utilizing My Band.

Everyone is different, they loose the weight differently and how their bodies respond to tried and true methods, i.e. exercise different types of food, etc.. are different. Continue to experiement to see what works best for you. Sometimes the body while adjusting itself will be more swollen on different days than others. Is your menses near? Are you keeping a food and exercise journal? Keep trying you will find your way. Good luck
