Do you sometimes NOT like the changes you see in the mirror?
maryrose replied to dancinglamb's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
This post is the best! I am a girly-girl and love all the scoop on product info. I just love beauty products and getting the scoop on good bras! I have tried the philosophy products and they are great. One product I love - especially any over 50 like me - Dr. Denesse on QVC. Her products are amazing. Nothing better than a Sat. night cuddling up and doing my nails, watching girlie movie and doing a facial, etc. It really helps us bandsters feel good about ourselves, don't you think? -
Mandy, You look absolutely adorable in your little pic there. You got for it! BTW, I had my one year check up a few weeks ago. MY surgeon is a wonderful surgeon, but has the personality of a hemorrhoid! He did not even compliment me, just said I was on track, blabs out a buch of statistics and left the room! I don't like him.

Lol. Long2bFree, All I could think of was a 3 hour nut class, possibly a phyche evaluation! I thought you were joking..lol. Though maybe they put you through the ringer. oh my! This whole thread is cracking me up. I stil don't know what knee brows are, but I think I prolly have them. -
Is Overeaters Anonymous Open to Surgery?
maryrose replied to devotion's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Devotion, I also went to a few classes and they were wonderful. I am not religuous person, so I had some issues, but overall I think the groups are great and may look into it again. I have just been too busy with my work schedule. Devotion, also have you thought about seeking therapy at the clinic? I am having an phych. evaluation In July to go over some issues I have been having lately with food. -

Oh Gosh, Thanks for starting this post! :cursing: I'm 53 and every day I check myself out in front of the mirror! I guess I expected something different to emerge. Don't ask me what??lol. I have always been pretty solid, so I don't have the sagginess, I just expected all the fat to be gone and look like the slim person I was when I was in my 30's. Not going to happen, but I'll take it anyway. I just want to look nice in my clothes at this stage in my life and of course the breast reduction (surgery date 6/26) will make me feel a lot better about myself. Every day I find new "stuff", what I guess a slimmer 50's woman is supposed to look like? I have no idea. I hate to sound like I am complaining because I am very, very happy with the weight loss, I guess I just don't always know what to expect, but it's all good! :cryin: -
Miralax! Nurse at the clinic put me on it a few months back. She explained that adding fiber rich foods was actually adding more "bulk" and making my condition worse. Miralax is very gentle. It took a few days to work, but you don't feel like your insides are turning upside down, it just works slowly like your own system and won't "take you by surprise" if you know what I mean. Once you get "straightened out", lol, you may want to take it every day or every other day. Great stuff!

Chrisann, Skim milk? That is interesting. Do you think it's the protien?

You guys are all doing great! It is comforting to know that change is the natural order to things and we can get through it! Juli, thanks for the wonderful post. YOu are all so wise!

Hi Juli, So glad I found this post. I am 1 year out. Had my 1 year check-up Friday. It was actually a month late, due to scheduling with the surgeon. At my clinic after the initial six months, you dont' have to go back for 6 months. I told the doc Fri. that I think that is too far between weigh-ins and that I need to get on that scale. He said it is different for everyone and seemed a little defensive. He said certainly I can come in more and ask to be weigh-in more often, but I think it was strange that I had to ask. They are very good there with fills, etc., but I don't know. I felt a little funny, almost kind of "scared" that I have this band now and it's up to me to figure this thing out?? He kind of made me feel like I was asking them to babysit me and my band for the rest of my life. Am I nuts? Well, they scheduled me for a phych. eval..lol. That is not the reason, though, sorry I am rambling here. I had a bad week last week, 1 year out, and still over-eating and PB'ing when I have a stressful week. OK, so It's a year out..and I still need support from my friends here. Sorry for the rambling.

Hi Travelen, It sounds like you have a good handle on the situation so far! I was thinking just yesterday that pre-band I used to "self-medicate" with food and the side-effect of that food/medication was weight gain. Then I started thinking, well, isn't that the same thing as other meds causing sides effects, such as weight gain. My self-medication (food) was making me fat. Now, with that taken away, yes, it is something I have to recken with every day. I wish I had a magic answer for you, but I am struggling right now with working from home, getting overly stressed out with my job, and having food readily available to me. Being alone and not in an office invironment ( with other people watching) takes a lot of discipline on my part. Every situation is different, but yes, I agree with the others that there are replacements for food and you have to embrace this new healthy lifestyle and remember this is something you are doing for YOU! Good luck. You sound like you are on the right road!

I have found that listening to my music at night has helped me relax. Does anyone have any fav. songs that they relate to more now? I have been listening to Aimee Mann - Save Me. I can relate to the words relating to wanting to be saved from an addiction, ect.

Wondering, once again, why I have to struggle so hard
maryrose replied to Alexandra's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Sometimes I think these cravings are our body's way of wanting to trick us into putting the weight back on! You know, like when I used to lose 20 lbs. pre-band days and sail along pretty happy, then all of a sudden my body would say, hey FEED ME, I want that weight back, and it comes back! Thank goodness we have the band, this helps us get this under control. It's a constant learning process. One thing I find odd, when a skinny person Pigs Out, it's no biggy. When it happens to us, we freak out!! We are human. These things are going to happen. I make the hubby put all the junk food on his bureau. If I sneak into it we know know about it! -
Jeeze, Well, I had to go back for a SECOND visit. How many had to do that??? lol. How can they tell from one short interview anyway??? I'm afraid to see mine!
-
Hi All, I wonder how you ladies get through stress with the band? I had a horrible week last week. Boss went to Vegas and I was in charge. I work from home, when the stress got bad, I ate! I don't know what to do about this. It's so easy to just run to the kitchen and grab bad stuff! Not even bad stuff. Actually, I had stressed my band so bad I was getting sick even on my shakes. I am feeling better today, but the constant over-eating and the PB'ing (being home makes is easy for me to just run to the sink and PB) has to stop. I lost 5 lbs. last week, but that is no way to do it and I know that. I am seeing the Doc Friday for my one year check-up. I am going to ask for a counselling session because I feel out of control in those situations. I'm afraid he's going to have me unfilled. Any advise? PS: I am down 70 lbs for my one year anniversary.

Slimy, Thanks for the response. Yes, absolutely. I think both things happen, I tighten up and subconsciously snack too much.
-
Dananah, I think we all get that way. Don't like this discourage you. I feel a lot better this week. I just push myself too hard. I have issues with taking care of myself.

i am staying on plan today because ...

Staying on plain because I found my knee caps again! They were lost ...lol. -
Thanks Grace. Yes, my over-working and stress has been an issue with my initial psych. eval. My daughter is getting married in Oct., so I really need to figure out how I am going to handle this. I made the decision today that something has to change in my stressfuul life for the sake of myself and my band. Band & STRESS does not mix! I am definitely going to schedule a psych. appointment. I know I don't take good care of myself and that is something I have to learn to work on. I know I am definitely going to need an unfill when it comes time for my daughters wedding and also any stressful situations that come up.

My own PCP did not want me to have this surgery. She was very negative about it. Once I made the decision to do this, I swiched over to her Nurse Practitioner, who supports me 200%. I was being weighed-in a few weeks back, and saw the Dr. eyeing me from behind her desk and she did not say ONE word, not even hello. I was prancing around in my new leather jacket on purpose gloating! ( what can I say, I am a little bugger). You have to do what you think is right for you. If funny, when I tell my friends, co-workers about some of my PB incidients they say they could NEVER have this done. It is just a personal choice.

SK, Also, don't blame yourself either. Someone on this board explained your body is trying to figure out what the heck is going on here and you will stop losing for a bit, but you will be OK.
-
Hi SK, Oh yes. I took the advise from this board and changed my diet around a little bit. I switched from my oatmeal in the AM to a piece of toast and some yogurt. Sometimes you have to fool your metabolism a little bit. You should get a lot of responses! Also, some of my nasty habits starting to crawl back and had I to give myselft a good kick in the buttocks! Such as snacking in front of the TV. Once I start that business...I am in trouble again. I am losing again, but I did struggle for quite some time til I sat down and really figured out what was going on here. Good luck! YOu can do this!!!!

Welcome over 50 banster! I am 53. Oh gosh. That's a tough one. I think you need to be in close contact with the clinic's insurance coordinator to make sure things are going the way they should in order to get approved. The clinic wants you to get approved, so they should be on top of this, but you want want to slip between the cracks. I know they also want you to lose weight also to shrink your liver. Do you have pre-existing medical conditions? They may also that into consideration also??? Good luck!

Hi Juicy, All I can add if the fact that artificial sweeteners do a number on me. I don't suffer from bad migraines, but trigeminal neuralgia. A lot of the sugar free things are recommended like diet Jello, crystal lite, etc. at my clinic, but I can't stand them and a lot of the Protein drinks. I hope you don't let this discourage you. I think if you take good care of yourself you can do this!

Boo boo...you go girl! The boob lady before? I did not notice that. Darn, I am so dense! I always miss the funny stuff. Jeeze. She was holding an apple in one hand a her boob in the other???? HU????? lol.
