How the Lap Band Really Works

Thanks for posting that... this is exactly the info my surgeon gave me. And he was right! 10 weeks out now... NO hunger. For instance, I had my Protein shake this morning... got busy & forgot about lunch. I had dinner around 7;30 because I was making my father dinner not cos I was hungry... no I dont do that everyday but its just an example of me not having any hunger... its almost bizarre! Have to wonder about the placement of the band on the vagus (sp?) nerve & whether each surgeon is accurate with this. Rach.

    Diet pills?

Do a search on youtube, I've seen one bandster so desperate she felt she had to take them and the feeling I got was that there was an undercurrent of people taking them but dont hold me to that. I'd say go for fills not the diet pills :smile2: But I would say that as I have no appetite at all... good luck ! Rach.

    quinoa

It's also great when puffed, hot milk & dried fruits. I love it but am so restricted that i can only eat very little of it  Rach.

    Losing weight without a fill.

So glad to see there are people that lose without fills. I have to say I do have 3mls baseline in My APS 10ml so its not empty. I had a theory that certain people carry more fat around their inner organs and some have almost none. It stands to reason that those with almost none who have adequate restriction, keep that restriction as not much changes in the area of the band... Just a theory. Rach.

    I need smaller pants again!!!

Ohhh Congrats !! so lucky  I've only gone down one size to an 18 (14US I believe) and after 55lbs you'd think I could've dropped 2.... Keep up the great work!! Rach.

    What foods can't you eat?

Ugh! I cant eat Tuna, no way, no how!!! Even the tiniest amount sits like a rock and blocks me up. I cant eat even the smallest crumb of a scone (I'm a chef so I tried a tiny morsel at work...stuck up good!) or bread in any form. Meh... good riddance to carbs I'm thinking... and I can live without tuna  Rach.
  7. oh I totally understand !! I'm a savoury fan but hate soup so the 2 weeks post-op & 3 weeks pre-op sweet Protein drinks nearly killed me !! I only use vanilla and add instant coffee... takes the sweetness away and gives a coffee kick!! Rach.
  8. Yep... I can admit I "cheated" !! That being said, I stuck to my pre-op diet & did that for an extra week(3 weeks as I had a theory about stomach shrinkage which seems to have paid off....) but after surgery, although I wasnt - and havent been hungry, I had head hunger. On day 4 post-op I had one 1/3 of a soy bar. The next hour, almost like she knew, the bariatric nurse called me to remind me how important that period of healing was. I didnt cheat again  Rach.

    Losing weight without a fill.

Finally yet another... I found one other person on here who had one fill and reached goal. I'm 7 weeks out, have lost 55.5lbs & my surgeon says so far i'm the most successful at this stage of any of his patients. I say, appreciate it & congrats on your amazing loss !!! Rach xxxx:tongue_smilie:

    stupid ugly!!

One thing I'm sure you've seen on this site is that fast losers are The Exception.... Not the rule. Dont compare. There's no point!! Rach.

    pre-surgery weight-loss expectations

I'm a self pay so all I had was a 2week liver shrinking diet (but I did 3). I count from the day I started losing weight which was 5 weeks before surgery as it is all connected with my surgery - I started losing the day I got my surgery date !! Rach.

How much weight have u lost?

I was banded on 22 july... but started preop diet 3 weeks before; Lost to Date; 24kg or 53lbs AVERAGE = 2kg/week 4.4lbs/week Yay !!!!!!!!!! Rach xxxxxxx:wub::wub::wub:
  13. On the flip side.... who says lap-banders dont lose fast ? I'm currently losing at a rate of average 2kg/week 4.4lbs/week - Granted my surgeon says this isnt usual and I have the perfect personality for the band.... but it shows we can lose just as fast as GBP people  Rach.
  14. Hi guys, As some may have heard, Christchurch NZ had a 7.1 earthquake on the 4th... extremely frightening and the aftershocks are abundant & nerve wrecking! Just wondering if others cant eat through extreme stress when banded?? It's actually the perfect time to test if I was an emotional eater.. I'm not! So let me know people... are you completely disinterested in food through stressful situations?? Rach.

    Extreme Stress ; R U unable 2 Eat??

Ouch ! Just read what kind you have  So sorry!! I have a history of that in my family as well as bowel cancer so just before I got my band I cut out meat and most animal products - I shudder to see the amount of meat eaten in high Protein diets as well, considering I'm getting 60-90g of protein with no meat per day Rach xxxxxx

    Extreme Stress ; R U unable 2 Eat??

So true! It's like it has been coming down the pacific rim for a few years now.... That one in Chile had all our towns evacuated but we only got a 50cm surge!! What surprised us was the quake wasnt in Wellington!! everyone expected one along the fault line, oh well... I know there's a big one thru the Adelaide hills, hope that doesnt go  Good luck today, I'll search to see what kind you were diagnosed with... very scary ! Rach.

    Extreme Stress ; R U unable 2 Eat??

 Yeah that sounds about right !!! Thing I hate about these quakes is the amount of broken lightbulbs! just found another, how weird is that ?!! Rach.

    Extreme Stress ; R U unable 2 Eat??

Oh elcee we've been watching the flooding on Sky News... Shepparton doesnt look good huh? Hope Jacqui's ok today...sounds really stressful  We had another 3 bad quakes last night, 2x 5.4 and one at 5.2 amazing how the walls shift from square to parrellelograms (sp?) and back... I'm forcing Protein shakes ATM as I dont lose without protein... gives me something to think about rather than waiting for the 6.0 they say is coming:crying: Thanks guys, Rach xxxxx
  19. TheUrbanWasteland

    Extreme Stress ; R U unable 2 Eat??

Wow Jacqui! Hope it all goes well  I'm pushing 7 weeks out now and surgeon didnt fill me as I have great restriction... so glad he didnt as I saw him the day before the quake! Could not eat all that day and Water was hard to swallow. Luckily we've just had smashed windows, small structural cracks, tumbled chimneys etc... Our Local hospital is on the verge of being condemned as are a few other houses (and we are 60km in a straight line away from christchurch). Problem has been the 100 odd aftershocks most being over 4.0 - really stressful! Hope your chemo goes well... If that's a possibility.... Rach.

Been in a bad mood since getting banded????

oh yeah... same here ! First 3 weeks was a nightmare... the smallest things started annoying me, then I'd cry, then I'd get apathetic... who knew what was going on !! Luckily everyone I know, knew about the surgery so they were all super understanding. 4th week that was gone thank goodness!! Rach.
  21. TheUrbanWasteland

3 days post op. Struggling to eat!

Yup ! Same here... I dont really like sweet foods so the Protein shakes were a nightmare after surgery too! That being said, I'm 6 weeks out now & still no hunger... hope you're like me !! I just drank lots of Water and waited until I could drink coffee shakes with Ice - less sweet Rach.

    Port protuding

I thought I could just feel my port ( lost 25lbs since surgery) but it turns out that was scar tissue & my port is an inch below where I thought it was. I have a low profile port & the surgeon is the only one who can locate it!! It's in my lower belly 1.5 inches under the incision scar  Have a feeling that its not gonna show anytime soon ! Rach.

    I'm soooo tired

I wonder if this is why Australiasian surgeons recommend Optifast ? (It has all the vitamins, iron, biotin ect...) I made my protein shakes with 3 scoops instead of 2 in order to get more energy & protein Rach.
  24. TheUrbanWasteland

    Oh oh, I'm Hungry

I just saw my nutritionist today... she said the fact that I get a minimum of 60grams of Protein a day has a lot to do with the fact I'm not getting hungry 6 weeks out. That being said, I'm still pretty restricted! Just really try to follow the guidelines given for protein... and solids protein where you can as you'll stay full longer :cursing: Good luck! Rach.

    smart ground/imitation ground beef

I have pretty good restriction and eat all the soy based steaks & sausages. I have no problem with them, but I only eat 1/3 of a teaspoon at a time and it takes me 15 minutes to eat about 80% of one burger sized steak. Of course here in NZ we have one called Bean Supreme which have so many great flavours... try them out, just go slow !! Rach.
