  1. Hey,

I def. understand. You have to do what is best for you medically and otherwise! If the doc says Im not a great candidate for Lap-band, then I will reconsider my options and see what else I can do! Yea I went to Mt.Sinai's info session yesterday and it was really informative. I still have some apprehension, but got a lot of great info. My original exposure to Lap-band came from a girl who had it done. She's actually a spokesperson for the system. She told me the pros and cons. We're around the same age, so I decided to check into it. Right now, I'm just dealing with some negativity mainly from my brother. He is just extremely skeptical about what he considers to be "fad" weight loss surgery. He's never been overweight a day in his life and has never known what it feels like to be in my shoes, let alone a FEMALE in the same position. I havent talked to my parents yet, b/c I know they will b skeptical. Honestly my weight is out of control and I need help with discipline and gettin my eating and health back on track! So I know lap-band can't fix everything, but I know it will help me get further than I can by myself. :smile2: Keep me updated on the sleeve and anything else u might consider

  2. Aww well im sorry to hear about that. At this point unless the doc says otherwise, i am only considering lapband. If im not mistaken, it is the only reversible method as well as the one that requires no cutting/rerouting of major organs. Im not a fan of the larger procedures. Also i have one child and in the nxt decade wld consider another and i know lapband can b adjusted accordingly. So thats just my take on things.:cursing:

  3. Ok cool! I called to make an appt last wednesday. They suggested I go to the info session this Tues and then call back to begin the process by setting up an appt for the next available time. i am excited! if u dont mind me asking, what is lpr? the reason u stated u cant have surgery? im not good with all the lingo yet! Thank you so much for ur suggestion and thanks for the update

  4. Hi...Im in NY as well and just got Medicaid/Healthfirst. I made my initial appt. with Dr. Kini at Mt. Sinai Hospital (NY).

He came HIGHLY recomended! I don't know what other types of insurances he accepts but for sure he takes Medicaid/Healthfirst. Here is his team's website...Maybe it can help. =o)

Hey thanks so much! I appreciate the help! Will keep u posted on what goes on! :)

  5. My name is Wendy, I'm 26, and despite all of my efforts to lose weight I've ended up here. I've been overweight for my entire life. I've lost weight in the past (80 lbs in 2005) but have gained all of it back over the past 5 years. I've come to realize that my weight is not something that I need to fix just temporarily, but for the rest of my life. I have no problem losing weight if I stick to it, but it becomes VERY discouraging when you lose and regain it all over and over again. I think this might be my bottom. I'm the heaviest I've ever been and I feel helpless. I feel like no matter how hard I try to lose the weight and keep it off, I'm eventually going to end up back here again... it's very hard to get motivated when you're thinking that way. In any case, I have a doctors appointment tomorrow with my family doctor and I'm going to chat with him about the Lap-Band® procedure. I'm nervous but I've read through some of the posts on here and I think it's normal to feel that way. I'm embarrassed that I'm even considering going to these lengths but I think it's time to admit that I can't do this on my own. Wish me luck!

At first I thought my weight issue had to do with self control and that something must be wrong with me if I can't keep it under control. Truth is, some ppl have to work much harder and in different ways to maintain a healthy weight! Obs we are in that group. I feel like Lap Band is a great way to supplement the things we have tried and a catalyst to start to do things better and differently forever! No one would choose to b obese and deal with the emotional and physical implications!

but we can choose to do something about it! :bolt:

  6. GIRL!!! I'm waiting for my insurance card too. I have HIP medicaid as far as providers you have to go onto the Health Plus website and look up participating hospitals and providers for bariatric surgery. I am getting my surgery dome by Dr.Nishamura South Nassau Hospital (LI).

Ok thanks! i have checked the Health Plus website and can't find any providers for bariatric surgery...so I've got to call them which I will be doing TODAY!! lol thanks for the advice and when r u getting your surgery done?! congrats! :bolt:

  7. Congrats Jenece. I think we will all b able to appreciate the little things when we r banded and now that u r Jenece i'm sure u do! What a blessing! :smile2: I can't wait to walk into a room and feel like eyes r on me for a GOOD reason lol

I used to model prior to giving birth to my son and was sooo excited b/c during pregnancy i LOST about 30 lbs. I looked great...soon the stress of new motherhood, being single, going to college full time and then back to work full time I have climbed to 310lbs since nov/dec 2009 - last time @ the doc office! I was mortified! I weigh more now than BEFORE, DURING AND RIGHT AFTER pregnancy. i just feel so depressed. I am an aspiring plus size model and working on getting down to a size 14...that is still my goal

So health, life (with our kids, significant others and fam/friends) and looking good. I think we can all agree to that ladies

  8. Hi everyone,

I just wanted to get some insight about eligibility for the band based on ppl's personal experiences. I have United Healthcare through my parent's and medicaid here in NYC for myself. UHC won't cover weight loss surgery - the particular plan we have and i'm sure that medicaid does.

    Here is my issue:

I am 22 y.o., 5'8, about 310 lbs (saddens me to write that #) and a bmi of 45 i beleive the calculator says. Before I began to seriously consider Lap Band as an option, I got a physical back in May.

Doc told me i'm not even in the prediabetic range, bloodwork is great, urinalysis was clean, no thryoid issue, blood pressure great, cholestorol great....

pretty much I am the healthiest fat person or otherwise! lol

Because I have no pre-exisitng conditions whatsoever, what do you think the chances for approval would be - remember this is for medicaid?

    Important to note:

Diabetes is hereditary on Dad's side - Dad not obese

high blood pressure on Mom's side - Mom obese

I do have flat feet and work in a job where I stand 6-8 hrs per shift and my back is always sore after my shift, the arch part of my foot is always in pain and my joints, esp in legs sometimes get stiff.

Like most people have dieted on and off for years and havent lost more than 40lbs at a time

Any insight would be helpful! Thanks

    Cicely

  9. Just reading from other posts, I am very glad the steps that they take to prepare u for this change. The journey pre and post-op is still not the "easy" way out a lot of other ppl think. it will take time, dedication and disicipline. All these things are worth it to me. I have a beautiful 9 month old son that I would love to see grow into a man. on my current unhealthy course, i fear that may not happen. I am glad that technology is as advanced as it is. so i am glad we are both taking the time: NOW to seize this opportunity. stay in touch :)

  10. Hi everyone,

new to the process. Once I get my insurance card and info, I will be able to make my first appt with a PCP. Anyone have any suggestions for a good PCP in the 5 boroughs of NYC? I also have my parents' health insurance United Healthcare, but their particular plan doesn't provide Lapband coverage. So I will be using medicaid/Health Plus for my insurance. Any one know about Health Plus or how the process works here in NYC? Thanks
