  1. We have a temperpedic and love it. I was sleeping in a reclining chair with lots of pillows 'cause my back was giving me such pain. I thought i'd never sleep flat again 'till we got the temperpedic. Ours is the middle price model.
  2. My prayers go out to you and your family. Ovarian cancer is one of the toughest to fight because it is so difficult to find. My DH is a pathologist and is active in the breast cancer fight. I applaud you for turning your terrible loss into action.

    Got thru Daughters Graduation

Congrats to your daughter. She really sounds like she has her act together. I have two daughters who make me so proud i could explode and i have an adopted son who is nothing but frustration. He failed math and English this year and has to go to summer school. He doesn't seem to think it is a big deal. Meanwhile the two girls are all A's and have summer reading and work for honors English. It can be so hard to parent them all when they are so different. Your SIL sounds like a B all right. It must make it hard on you if you are close to your brother. You can never choose your in-laws...
  4. I was self-pay and the hospital based surgeons cost much more. That is, the hospitals charge a bigger cut. Cincy wt loss center uses an out patient surgery center, so it has less overhead. (it is still loaded with all the newest gadgets and the place is lovely and spotless) My DH had bypass surgery at Kettering when the unit was new and other than one nurse in the icu (who was an idiot) he had great care.
  5. I'm from Beavercreek and had mine done at Cinci weight loss. It takes me about 35 min. to get there.
  6. No such luck for me. I hate taking pills. I went off the Nsaids for my arthritis, but am missing them and haven't been able to go off of any other meds yet. I wish I could, the bucks for all those meds. could buy a lot of new small clothes.
  7. I agree, don't let the uneducated talk you out of getting your health back. Dropping excess weight will change your medical needs. You will probably need to decrease your meds as your need for them decreases. It is painful to carry excess weight. Pain and arthritis management were my main reasons for getting the band. Do it!

    I have a date!

Many congrats Laurend! Do you have a pre-surgery diet? With close to two thousand posts to your credit you must be the most informed pre-bandster ever. I can't wait to hear about your weight loss victory.

    I live in squalor

Great advice everybody. I am going to check out the flylady site. My DH is a slob. He is untrainable. He grew up with maids in s america and so now he drops things everywhere, loses everything, and then complains about it. I think he suffers from depression and add also. Trying to solve the problem is a fight waiting to happen. So I try to do it myself. Which is impossible, and depressing. Add three teenagers...

    starting over

Good luck Tess L, Please post what works for you because I have not been the best bandster either and I need to get back to work. Summertime is here with all the great fresh fruits and veggies and all that heat (which means fewer things to hide in). Gardening for me should help. I have 7 cubic yards of mulch in my driveway with my name on it. Maybe you could do some gardening too, add some summer flowers and have it be a reminder of your band journey? I just planted a honeysuckle with red flowers... Sorry about the rambling. Having the band has worked well for me but it does get boring doesn't it? Before the last round of cakes for mothers day and multiple birthdays...leftover cake..., I had coffee and cereal for bfast, a protein drink for lunch and a smaller version of the familys meal for dinner. For a night snack I had an orange.

    Eating out of boredom

Boredom is a big trigger for me too. Gum helps (I using diet soda pre-band, and now i avoid bubbles) just be sure not to swallow it...It seems wierd, but the more busywork I have to do for other people, the more bored I get and I have really fallen off the wagon. Routine helps in the "get it out of the house" way. Be in the routine of not buying it. If goodies have to be around, freeze them so they are available to not addicted family members, but harder to eat for us.

    Still Left Out

Sheree, Don't take a lack of response personally, we are all in the same boat! I too have had those "what did I say?" moments, and for a while I felt like a thread killer. The rule of "give what you want to receive" works well for these forums. It feels really good to give others support as you go on your own journey to good health. Soon people will get to know you and you will be on the receiving end of support too! Good luck!

    Mood Swings?!?!?!?

Wow, no wonder my periods have been so strange. I thought the change was coming! Talk about major PMS. Sheesh. I did some retail therapy today and the clerk brought me a medium in the changing room. It didn't fit but it was nice to think that that was the size she picked for me. I did find a whole lot on sale in Large (no x's or xx) I'm on my way.
  14. A message about hurt feelings on another thread reminded me of one of those moments when a zinger hits you without warning. I thought that probably everyone has had one of those moments and venting it here may help remove some of the punch. After all, it's not the sort of stuff you can vent in normal conversation. One of my moments happened when we were on a four hour hike through the mammoth cave in kentucky. At mid point through the cave the guide is supposed to tell interesting stories and facts about the cave. He asked if anyone had any questions, so since we were two hours hike in both directions from the exit, I asked what they would do if someone had a heart attack there in the cave. WELL, He said, "they would die. AND ma'm I don't want to hurt your feelings but obesity is the main cause for that." :embarassed: The group was about 120 people, all of whom became quiet and wanted to see what obese person had asked that question. I was mortified. I hadn't been feeling all that "fat" that day (you all know that "fat" is a feeling like sadness), and as I always notice whether or not I am the largest person in the room (that day I wasn't), I suddenly became so huge that any interest in the rest of the tour was impossible. If you are ever in mammoth caves, avoid the skinny old man tour guide who brags about his 28 inch waist. He is a jerk.

    Cincinnati Weight Loss Center?

I had mine done by Dr Osborne at cincy wt loss and haven't had any trouble. The banded nurses are very helpful too.
  16. I was watching the Dr.Phil show and saw an advertisement that featured a woman who was my height and weight before and was so slim after banding. It was very inspiring. I was banded two months later.

    Vitamin Deficiency

It could also be a TIA (blood clot) so it is important that your doctor give you a good workup. The vitamin thing is just a coincidence. Good luck and let us know what happens!

    Fear of weight loss

Excellent advice from TerryDoodle! I agree that it sounds like you need to adjust your thinking. Remember that you are trying to lose weight because that is the HEALTHY thing to do! Keep pushing your liquids (non-caloric or low-caloric, I like lemon Propel) and adjust your calories if you need to,in order to lose 1 to 2 pounds a week. Your body will thank you for it; don't let fear keep you form your goal.

What size do you want to be?

Sizes are so weird. I made most of my clothes in high school to save money and had a size 12 pattern that fit me at 132 lbs (I was 5'71/2" then). I saved one pair of pants in that size as "inspiration" to lose weight and now when I look at them they must be a 4! LOL After having twins (18 lbs of baby combined) there is no way I could be that small. I started at a size 20 and didn't have much because I just couldn't find things I liked. Now I'm a 16 (at 185 lbs) and I am starting to get into shopping again. What fun! My goal is a 10, but I would settle for a 12. Does anyone know how clothing patterns run these days???

So, yay or nay on this haircut?

I'd give it a YEA! It's very cute and great for easy - go for the summer!

    Last straw stories

I had a whole box of last straws over my weight, but was giving up hope about getting the weight off. I had been an expert dieter. I had dieted off hundreds of pounds. ...just gained them back and then some... My DH had had bypass surgery and it probably saved his life but I just couldn't deal with all the potential complications. Likewise about the RNY. Too risky, too much down time to recover from surgery. I had never heard of the band until one day seeing a commercial about it on TV! From that moment I started to have hope again. I had to self pay in spite of many co-morbid conditions, but I don't regret it a bit. I'm down to a weight that I have now been for 10 years and I am feeling so much better. (down 42 lbs, 58 to go) Life is bearable and getting better every day.

How has exercise affected your results?

I have not added exercise in yet, but I am counting down to it. I have arthritis and wanted to get some of my excess weight off befor stressing my joints with a new routine. I am a housewife though, so I normally putter through the day and don't sit much. I'm sure that helped. I have lost 1 to 2 pounds per week and it gets boring waiting for the numbers to change but I'm learning patience! My plan is to add in exercise in at 45 pounds. I'm at 43...

    Help after operation?

If you have all your liquids stocked up, you'll be fine. I just wanted to sleep the day after, but didn't need "nursing." Also get a bunch of DVDs to watch, 'cause I'm a big promoter of pleasent distraction to get through discomfort. I have arthritis and recovery from the band procedure was a snap.

    Grazing!

Hi! If you know what time is risky, schedule something else during that time slot. I don't know if you work or are at home during that time, but here are some suggestions: chew gum get your Water in, (I drink lemon propel, it's very refreshing) have coffee with skim milk go shopping and walk, walk the mall (no food court!) get a manicure/ haircut/ shop for a smaller size catch up on some reading/ do a crossword or sudoko watch a funny movie while catching up on ironing clean out a junk drawer email friends or post on lapbandtalk! phone a friend walk the dog bathe the dog... make a TO-DO list for those moments when you feel that restlessness coming on... In other words, if you can plan a plesant distraction you won't think about having a food that your body doesn't need anyway. good luck!!!!!
