In January of 2008 my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer. I watched my entire life as she struggled with her weight, loosing - gaining - loosing. She was never happy with herself or with me for being over weight. Her wish for me above most everything else was to be smaller, healthier, and not have to struggle my entire life, as she did, with my weight. The following January after a long battle going in and out of chemotherapy and finally being taken care of by hospice my mother passed away. This was the most pivotal thing that could have ever happened to me. She was my fortress, my stronghold. She had more determination and where-with-all than anyone I have ever met. As a promise to her to become healthy, I chose to have weight loss surgery the following July. I see my mother daily in the small things in my life, and in my determination to make this change for my own betterment. It has in a way kept me close to her, in at least her spirit.
