In 1990 I weighed 350 lbs and decided to get healty. I went to the gym 7 days a week and created and ate a diet of high protein, low fat and low carbs. By 1992 I had lost 100 lbs and was very healthy. I met my wife in 1993 and we were married that year. I stayed pretty close to 260-280 for most of the next 7 years. In 2001 (I'm an actor) I played Falstaff in a production of Shakespeare's Henry IV Pt 1. We rehearsed for several months and I never had a thought about eating healthy or limiting my drinking. I was under the spell of Sir John Falstaff. By the time I was done playing the role, I was up to 320 lbs. Then in the next five years I got less and less interested in losing the weight and exercising. As an actor I've done many stage fights (swordplay, hand-to-hand combat etc.) and had injured my knees a number of times. In 1999 I had ACL reconstructive surgery on my right knee, but have never really recovered the strength from my younger days. In addition, I developed arthritis in both of my knees and this made most cardio exercises difficult and painful. Plus, I'm an accompished chef and foodie, which makes it very hard to ignore finer foods...actually most foods. I am an emotional eater as well. It's always been a reward or a comfort to me to treat myself well with food. Now at 53, I know that if I ever want to work steadily again as an actor (my career has slowed over these past 10 years) and ever be able to take hikes with my wife, which I miss very much, let alone survive many more years, I have to make a big change. This is the big change.
