I've been fat all my life. I remember getting diet pills from my pediatrician when I was like 10 or so. My family would make pig sounds if I grabbed a second helping thinking they were helping. "Fat lazy slob" was a fond name I heard more than once trying to "encourage" me to take charge of my life and do something about it. My first GP and a young adult blamed every illness or ailment on my weight. Pretty soon you learn to grow thick skin and ignore it. I found my true love in life and married and was bless with two children. I gained a lot of weight with the first pregnancy but none with the second. I've had health issues that have been made worse by the weight and have tried just about every diet out there. As as adult, I'm a yo-yo dieter. I'll loose weight and eventually gain even more. I'm 50 years old and prescription poor. I know if I could loose weight I'd feel better and not need so many drugs. Five years ago I went through all the steps for gastric bypass. My family was terrified of that surgery and eventually talk me out of it. Last year I was determined to loose weight before I turned 50 and was actually doing it for the first time in a long time. I had lost 40 lbs and was enjoying dieting success!! Then my fibromyalgia flared up and I was put on Lyrica and did I have some side effects, one of which was weight gain. I gained all I lost and then some back withing 5 months. With my fibro myalgia back under control I found out that my insurance would cover lap bad and with my doctors blessing made my first appointment. I went through all the steps required but my insurance denied my surgeon first request because I had gain weight during the six month pre time. An appeal explaining that I had truly been dieting but due to medication changes had been unsuccessful won approval. On May 20 I had my surgery. Sadly, I had complications. The surgeon punctured and artery requiring a second surgery, three transfusions and a four day hospital stay. I am going great so far. At my 30 day mark I had lost 24.6 lbs. Then I tried steak and got a piece stuck. Dr. Kim drained my band before I've even had my first fill. He's confident that we'll be able to put that amount back and more when I go in for my first fill on July 7. I'm doing so well that I certainly hope everything keeps moving forward, but you can bet that I won't be having steak, not matter how thin and small the pieces are, for quite some time.
