questions about band to bypass revision
bandedat19 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I've been suffering from complications with my band for years. I finally got the nerve to go back and see my doc (after long term vomiting, reflux, pain, weight gain), and she and my surgeon suggested a revision to bypass. Has anyone done this? What have your results been like? How does eating differ? Worried that I may fail with bypass the same way as I did with the band. I have so many questions, and while the forums I've seen have been very helpful I'm seeking more specifics! Thank you : ) -
Updates on December 2015 Surgeries
bandedat19 replied to bugsy72's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had surgery December 21st. Everything went really well, had little to no pain, and have recovered nicely : ) Back at work and the gym after two weeks, and now I'm about 3.5 weeks post op. I lost 17 pounds pre surgery and 13 pounds the first week while on the Clear Liquids phase. However, I've stopped losing weight, and have even gained 1.5 lbs. since I started introducing solids. I'm doing everything right: measuring food, chewing slowly, not drinking with meals, Protein first, stopping when I'm full. I should note, I had Lap Band done in 2007, but had band to bypass revision 12/21/15. Has anyone else experienced this? I have a post-op appt this Monday, but I'm looking for some answers! questions about band to bypass revision
bandedat19 replied to bandedat19's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
My liquid diet starts December 7th. Currently struggling to lose a few pounds before then due to my band being almost empty : ( And Thanksgiving didn't help... My hospital has this amazing Protein supplement line. Each pack can be mixed with Water and has 200 calories. They have Soups, drinks, puddings, and most are delicious! The good thing is that they have all daily vitamins/minerals needed. I'm not sure where else they can be purchased but check out New Direction Weight Control System. The hot cocoa and lemon pudding are amazing! @@phatfatgirl How was your pain post-op? I'm having the band revised to bypass and also having my gallbladder removed! Getting very nervous and have already started having dreams/nightmares about it! Is weight loss slower with revision? -

PROTEIN - Shakes vs Solid Food
bandedat19 replied to Drasan's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i definitely prefer the protein shakes in the morning when my band feels much tighter. I do typically feel a little hungrier sooner than if i ate a regular meal. Here's one that i really like : ) 1 scoop unflavored ProPerformance 100% whey protein 1 cup light chocolate soy milk 1 frozen banana (if unfrozen, you may want to add ice) 1 tsp. instant coffee -
Chest pain feeling, soreness, and nausea
bandedat19 replied to ainnjay's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know that when i was just starting the soft Proteins it was recommended that I only eat ONE scrambled egg. You may have eaten just a little too much, or too quickly. I wish that in the beginning of my post-op I would have taken the time to really chew and take small bites, because I struggle with it now three years out. Good luck! -
I've done it, who hasn't? but be careful! you may not be able to "commit to the spit" as someone mentioned above. Also, when you do this, you still ingest some of the calories of whatever you put in your mouth! You're not saving yourself as many calories as you think you would.

you can have coffee as soon as you are off Clear Liquids (a week for me). Just make sure and time it with your "meals" (your chicken broth), as in not 30 mins before and not an hour after as this will make it easier when you begin to eat solids. you probably won't be up to going to that appt. It's not absolutely impossible, but you will still be very sore and very worn down. Also, the pain meds really knocked me out, within 20 mins of taking them. If you are dead set on going, make sure you head out earlier than normal so you can take it slow getting in/out of the car/parking lot/office. WALK SLOW! My doctors/nurses gave me all the info I would need post-op in all of the sessions that I was required to attend before surgery. I was required to take a 4 week "class," a meeting with the nutritionist, a meeting with the psychologist, a group discussion with other banded patients, and several meetings with my nurse about how to eat, what to eat, healthy alternatives, etc. Lahey Clinic in Burlington, MA has an amazing program with a plethora of information. I had to stay one night in the hospital. Almost had to stay another night because I couldn't urinate (sorry, gross I know, but wanted to let you know!) Good luck to you!

Banded yesterday - June 14th - recovery ?s
bandedat19 replied to newstacy09's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm about 3 yrs post-op but I remember the day after getting banded like it was yesterday! It felt like I had done wayyyy and i mean wayyyyy too many crunches and sit-ups! Please please take the pain meds seriously. That is, use them when you need them, no more, no less! Also, the short, slow walks really helped me. The night of my surgery a nurse walked with me around the hospital floor a few times and I walked every day after that about three or five times a day (like I said, short and slow). Not only does it help the pain and recovery, but it also aids in your beginning weight loss! Good luck to everyone, and congrats!
