    Dont wanna tell a soul...

I didnt want to tell my family either. The only person who knew in the begining was my mother. I wanted her to keep it to herself but that was hard because she has kind of a big mouth. When I was first considering getting the lap band, I didnt want them to know, because I didnt want every conversation from then on to deal with whether or not I made a decision. I had a feeling that every time I would talk to my grandmother she would ask me if I made a decision or not. I didnt want to tell many people after I made the decision either, but my mother didnt seem to understand that. She started telling my family, and I didnt talk to her for a while after that and she didnt understand why I didnt want them to know. i was worried that they wouldnt understand why I wanted to do it or they wouldnt be supportive. also, in case they were happy for me, I didnt want to tell then i was going to go through with it, and then for some reason back out and have them be disapointed in me. A week before my surgery i decided to tell people, but it tuens out that there were only like 2 people who didnt know about it (thanks mom). It turns out I had nothing to worry about, they were all supportive, but I am still worried that almost every conversation in the future will be centered around the lap band. (sorry if i was rambling)

    Banded on Monday

My pain is starting to go down now, I just have a lot of soreness where my port is. ive been alternating between percocet and liquid tylenol. I probably shouldnt be on the percocet anymore, but I dont tolerate pain very well, so i am still on it. I havent actually sleep in my bed yet. I have been sleeping in a recliner. I am scared of sleeping in my bed because I move around a lot when I sleep and I am scared of waking up and being in more pain. I hope I can sleep in my bed soon.

    I had my surgery July 22, 2010

Im just curious, did your doctor tell you to take ibuprofen? Because when I left the hospital, my surgeon said that I am strictly not allowed to use Ibuprofen anymore. he didnt really explain why though.

    Pain question

Thats so weird that that happened to you. When I was on my 2 week liver shrinking diet, I was eating a sandwhich one night and the roof of my mouth started hurting so bad that i couldnt finish eating the sandwich. it was so weird!
  5. As far as my surgeon said, i did great. Apparently he broke a camera when he was in me..lol. He also had to repair a massive hernia, which was one of the biggest he had seen. None of the nurses know that I had a hernia repair though, so they blamed all my pain on the gas, and didnt realise that I was really really in pain, and had a reason to be. They had to use 4 stitches on my hernia instead of the usual 1. The surgeon said that my liver looked really good and small, which made me happy. I am still in a bit of pain today. I am still on my percocet, because I have a very very low pain tolerance. How about you?

    I had my surgery July 22, 2010

I had my surgery on the 21st. I am still in a good amount of pain, but that was because they had to repair a massive hiatial hernia. It is getting better every day though. As for food, I have been drinking a lot og chicken broth, either with protien or fiber mixed in. I have also been drinking a ton of crystal light and water. Congratulations on being banded, and let me know how you are doing!
  7. A lot of people have suggested gas-ex strips.

    Banded July 20th

I am definately experiencing the burping thing, mostly every time I stand up. For me it is pretty painful! I cannot wait to get rid of it!
  9. I had my surgery on the 21st, and the night before, i was having doubts about it, but once I got it done, I was really proud of myself for making it through the procedure. I think its normal to have doubts, especially when making such a huge decision. I was having doubts because I am going into my senior year of college and I have so many things that I want to do next year while im at school, that the though of something going wrong really bothered me, but I read a lot of stories on this website, and I decided that the benefits outweighed the risks, so I decided to go through it, and I am very happy i did. Sorry if that didnt make sense, I just took some Percocet. lol
  10. I got banded pretty fast. I attended the seminar on June 9 and I was banded on July 21. I didnt have to do a 6 month supervised diet though.
  11. My surgeon said that the hernia was the main reason why I was having Acid Reflux, so if that is the case, then it was a good thing they repaired it. They also told me that if they dont fix hernias, then the band doesnt work properly.
  12. I cant remember if I was told by my surgeon ahead of time if I was going to be doing a barium swallow, but i expected it after reading so many people's surgery day stories. Those stories helped me a lot. I wasnt surprised about the blood thinner shot, or that it would burn, because so many people mentioned that it burned, so I expected it.

    Banded on Monday

Congratulations! I was banded on Wednesday, and my surgeon also found a hernia. Apparently it was one of the biggest ones that he had seen, so instead of using the 1 stitch that us needed to repair most hernias, he had to use 4 stitches on my, and they went through the diaphram, so I have been in a lot of pain. I look forward to reading about your story! -Robyn
  14. I was just banded on Wednesday, and I had a problem wiht telling people too. My insurance doesnt cover the whole thing, so my mom is paying the rest, so there is no way to really do this without her knowing. I did, however, tell her that I wanted to be the one to tell people about it when I was ready, but she went to work every day and when she got home, she had told another person. I was lucky because everyone was supportive, but I didnt want people to know, because I thought that people would always be asking me When im getting the surgery done, whether I even decided about getting it, which would have added more pressure to it. i didnt even tell my aunts and grandmother until a week before my surgery.

    hernias and lap band surgery?

I actually, according to my surgeon, had one ofd the largest hernias he had ever seen, and he fixed at the time of my surgery. It just meant that I was under longer.
  16. You have gas after surgery, because when they are operating Laproscopically (sp?) they use gas to expand your stomach so that they can see things easier. Some surgeons suck the gas back out. It isnt like intestinal gas or something like that. it is just gas moving around your body, which is why some poeple feel it in their shoulder. The best thing to get rid of it is to walk around A LOT because it helps it dissolve, and if you are lucky, you will burp it out. I hope that helped a little.

    Blood Pressure

I was really shocked with my blood pressure, because I am used to having high blood pressure. I had my surgery done yesturday, and last night my blood pressure got as low as 98/54 which freaked me out because my blood pressure has never been that low
  18. Hey! I just wanted to see if you made it through your surgery alright!

  19. I would have to say that the pain after I got out of surgery was at a 10. I had a huge hiatial hernia (they said it was the biggest one they had seen, and instead of the normal 1 stitch they use, they had to use 4 on me), and they had to stitch it to my diaphram, so it hurt really bad, adn it still hurts a little, and i just had surgery yestury. I didnt have much gas, but the hernia repair definately made up for it.
  20. I can finally consider myself banded! I was banded yesturday at Parham Doctors Hospital in Richmond, VA. My morning started off with taking a shower wiht the special soap that they gave me at my pre-admission testing. When I got to the waiting room, the only thing that i was nervous about was getting an IV because I hate needles. The nurse was very nice though. she gave me a shot to prevent blood clots, and then she gave me a shot of lidocane in my hand and numbed it so that she could give me the IV. I was in the holding room for quite a while, and while I was waiting, I talked to my surgeon, met the anesthesit, and all of the nurses. Soon after that, they wheeled me to the operating room where I had to scoot myself to the table. Then they pushed something in to my IV and ave me the breathing mask and then I fell asleep. I woke up in a lot of pain, because I had to have a Hiatial Hernia repair, and it was appaently one of the worst ones my surgeon has ever seen. He said he usually only needs one stitch, but he ended up needing to use 4 on me, so I was in a lot of pain. They put of pain medicine in my IV in the recovery room, but it didnt work, then my mom came back and I was having discussions that I dont even remember. I was also having trouble because I kept forgetting to breathe, but as soon as the nurse offered me a popsicle, I was so much better! As soon as I got to my room, I was begging people to let me walk, which I did, and I even walked all the way to raidiology do that I could do my barium swollow. After that, i was still in a lot of pain, so all night the nurses gave me morphine every hour. It was a long night with people coming in to wake me up. At 3:30 am, a lab tech came in to take my blood, and then at 6, I had to get another shot to prevent blood clots. Over the course of the time there, I was up walking a lot. I finally was discharged about 2 hours ago, and now that I am home, I am eating sugar free popsicle, and drifting off to sleep, so sorry if this doesnt make much sense. Good luck to everyone getting banded in the new future and to other people who are still in the decision process making. -Robyn
  21. I am pretty excited! I am kinda nervous though because I noticed a heat rash on my side yesturday, and I am doing eeverything i can think of to get rid of it, but I am worried that they might cancel the surgery because of it. it is on my side in one of my folds.

  22. yes! you can definately add me as a friend!

I am having a very hard time with the exercise piece too. i have just been walking. I started by walking up my street, because it is a rather steep hill, and then I walked around the block, and then I walked a little farther. I actually walked a mile the other day, but then I pulled a muscle lifting a box and havent walked since.

I am actually kinda worried right now, because I have a rash on my side where my skin folds over itself, (sprry if thats TMI) and im worried if its not better that they wont do the surgery.

I will let you know how I am after surgery. I am very nervous, but also looking forward to it, or at least looking forward to getting it overwith.

    I'm half way there!!

Jamie! only one more full day until Surgery! Which means one more full day of the liver shrinking diet!
  24. Hi Lucy!

I know! Its only 2 days away, and i am very close to freaking out. lol. I am really nervous. the only kind of "surgery" I have had was getting my wisdom teeth out, which cant really compare. I have been very worried about going into surgery and being so overweight. i keep thinking that somehting is going to go wrong, but people keep assuring me that everything is going to be fine.

I am DEFINATELY looking forward to being done with this liver shrinking diet. I am so tired of being hungry!

I will definately let you know how my surgery goes! I am just looking forward to it being over with.
