How do you work through a plateau?

Elfie, You're right, I've had a rapid weight loss in a month, and this is probably my body's way of putting on the brakes. My bariatric coach says that you're going to plateau every 20-30lbs. Just trying to figure out the best way to work through it. I will try to up the calories just a little and increase my workout to see if that helps- Today my pouch is very grouchy, so hopefully tomorrow will be better!

    Grouchy pouch

I would just like to say that today I have a very Grouchy Pouch. Comprende?

    What's for Breakfast?

I have a hard time eating in the mornings, so I usually just have Weight Control Oatmeal. Its easy to get down and it keeps me full longer than regular oatmeal. I usually have a Protein shake with it just to get in my needed protein, but I use premier Protein shakes that don't have milk in them. I suggest you talk to your nutritionist for healthy ideas if you don't do shakes well.

    Coming off Birth control

OK I'm a nurse too so I had to chime in on this one... I totally agree with what she said, but even a minimally invasive procedure puts you at higher risk for clots, then birth control increases your risk on top of that. If you're already seeing a cardiologist for what ever reason, it is important to also understand that certain medical problems can put you at an even higher risk. Better to be safe than sorry.

3 days post op and all I want is water!

Its not about what you "want" anymore as far as food goes. You have to concentrate on feeding your body the right stuff to heal. I remember forcing myself to drink the Protein drinks, and struggling to get in the daily Water requirements. You will have to change your thinking from what you "what" to what does my body "need"? You can do it, slow and steady wins the race!
  7. I hit my first thirty pound goal today! Wahoo! Exercise is getting easier, I think I have my eating down to a routine and still believe this is the best thing I've ever done for myself. I did manage to have a mini-stuck episode yesterday...was watching TV and eating a turkey and cheese wrap... distracted, forgot to chew, and was in PAIN for about ten minutes. Now I've learned my lesson, and I no longer eat distracted. Thank God I didn't puke, but now I know what a PB feels like. Lesson Learned-Won't Happen Again!

    Head Hunger

I remember feeling like I needed to chew something so I chewed sugar free gum. Do not advance you're diet until you're supposed to, if you follow the rules you're doc gave you, you will do fine! And about "Head-Hunger"- this is why this is such a hard process, because now is the time you have to start training your brain to sort out what is real "hunger" and when you just think you're hungry. During this phase you really have to be mindful of your emotions and how you feel. I keep a journal to help me identify trigger behavior.

    Scars...what are you using?

I was using Mederma, which seemed to be working out well until I broke out into a rash! So now my scars look horrible and I need to try something different- AFTER this rash heals.

    Lab Band & Birth Control

Hi Girls! I have been on birth control pills for almost seven years. I spoke to my doc about this pre-op and he actually recommends the pill for women who aren't already on it, of course to prevent pregnancy immediately after surgery. But I have not experienced any problem with my weight loss on the pill and am losing about 2-3 lbs a week. When its that TOM, I will notice my weight will stay the same for the week or be up slightly, but then it quickly goes away after the fact. It might be worth mentioning to your GYN anyway.

    September Bandsters!

I was banded on September 2nd!
  12. You guys are so right! I get so irritated at people who post about why they're not losing weight with the band, but they continue to make poor food choices and don't exercise. I heard this quote at a support meeting that I go to " The best screwdriver in the world won't help a carpenter that needs a hammer." That made so much sense to me because you have to have the right tools to succeed. The band alone will do nothing for you, but if you decide to make the commitment to yourself to work with your tool, you WILL lose weight. Your band did not fail you- YOU failed your band.
  13. I itched like hell for the first week, but everything eventually stopped itching and healed up nicely. Once you get all the inflammation under control Mederma works wonders with scars. I'm using it everyday and the redness around the incisions are almost gone. You can get it at any pharmacy, but you have to ask for it.

    Post Op/cycle-hormonal changes

Yep! It is so common for women to have menstrual issues after surgery. The first reason is because surgery puts your body into a state of shock. I had my period the week before surgery and then again the week after. The second reason is because excess estrogen is stored in fat! So if you're losing a lot of weight in a short amount of time its going to take your body some time to adjust to the hormonal changes as you get rid of that estrogen. This is the reason so many of us overweight women have fertility problems, PCOS, and weight related hormone issues. Luckily for me, my birth control pills seem to keep things pretty even.

    Hiccups

I don't know what hiccups indicate for me, because I get them all the time, at least once a day. It is usually after I eat, but I don't drink with meals and I don't overeat. I'm so scared of vomiting that I really have been taking things slow. Hiccups I thought were common to banded patients.

    Couch to 5K...anyone?

I absolutely LOVE C25K! I'm getting ready to re-start it, I did it a few years ago when I was training to run a 5K with some other nurses at work who were all skinny and fit and I needed some extra help! Its all interval training so it will tell you to run for a minute then walk for two. Then the next week you will run for two minutes then walk one... so you get the drift. It gradually builds your endurance and is GREAT for people who are just getting into exercise.
  17. I used to drink a ton of DC!! I weaned myself off when I went on my two week pre-op diet before surgery. I even weaned myself off of caffeine all together and I'm glad I did. I got tired of crystal lite, which I still do drink on occasion, but I switched to Powerade zero. It is possible to kick the DC!
  18. Hi All! Its kinda been a while since I last checked in, so I thought I would give an update! I am three weeks post-op and feeling great! I am down a total of 22 lbs since surgery! My biggest challenge is eating! I am still drinking two protein shakes a day and would rather drink that than eat something! (what a strange feeling that is for a change!) I don't really feel "hungry" like I used to but I can definitely tell when I'm "empty". My port area is completely healed and I'm able to sleep on my stomach with no discomfort and the area feels just like nothing happened in there. It does kinda feel like I have a second belly-button, and my dad has so appropriately named my band "Tight-Wad". Doing Great! No Regrets! Much love to everyone!

    Thoughts on Medifast drinks?

Hi! I used medifast as a part of my pre-op diet. I really liked the powder packets because then I could "create" my own protein shakes. For example, in the mornings I would use the Medifast Swiss Mocha powder, add one scoop of instant coffee and 8 oz of milk and it tastes just like a mocha coffee from starbucks!

    Halloween Challenge

Heck yeah you qualify! Its just a challenge to get us all moving! I was just banded on the 2nd and I plan to participate! And there's no "win" or "lose", its just fun to participate and challenge yourself.

    Recovery Question

My hubby had to go back to work the next day too, and I was kinda worried how I would feel so my mom came over for a while and I felt bad because I was totally fine and didn't need much help at all! The day after I was shopping at walmart!

    mushy food and weight re-gain

Ok Zeniada, I started mushy foods two days ago and weighed myself this morning and darn if I wasn't up a pound! WTF?! And I'm actually being really mindful of what goes in, so this was a surprise since I've been losing steadily since surgery! I'm only walking until I see my surgeon this week and hopefully he will release me to do some other exercises, but I'm hoping to see the scale go back the other direction before my f/u appt this week. Keep it moving!
  24. Desiree, You will do great! We're rooting for you!
  25. My surgery went great! I've been banded a week now, and am down a total of 13 lbs since surgery! I could hardly believe it! The pre-op diet is rough, and I had the worst diarrhea for what seemed like forever... even after the band because all you're eating is liquids! I never really had "pain" on the pre-op diet... hopefully that will go away! I was nervous right before surgery too, but over all this was a walk in the park compared to what I thought it was going to be!

You can do it, just stay positive!
