  1. Hi Everyone, For those that are more than 2 years post op from RNY surgery.....can you tell me if you still experience dumping if you eat something too sweet? I would like to know if in my future I could have a bite of cake or a piece of chocolate without dumping. Thanks
  2. Thank you all for your answers. I appreciate the info.

    I just want to CHEW

    I feel for you.....it is a challenge.....this may make you feel a bit better....my pre-op liquid is a torturous 1 full month.

    Pre-op diet is a b***h

@@GutBgone Good luck with your journey. Hopefully each day will get better. I think not being able to easily drink water will be an adjustment. Living in Maui where it is warm all year long I constantly drink water. It will be odd not to gulp down 1/2 a bottle in 5 seconds. @@Sutter Phoenix @@megan143 I really like the Unjury chocolate drink....I couldnt handle the smell of the unflavoured Unjury. I did find GenePro Protein to have no taste and no smell. I was able to get a few sample packets for a few dollars so I could test it out before I ordered the big package. Good Luck Everyone.

    Pre-op diet is a b***h

@@NCTRNL Thank you for your response. I know my liver must be large...my comment on liver testing was in response to a previous question asking if my liver was exceptionally large.....my gripe is not with the pre-op liquid diet....my gripe is the fact that my DR is telling me it has to be 1 month long when it seems the average is between 1 week to 2 weeks long. The post op liquid diet to me wont be near as challenging as the pre-op diet. During the post op diet my stomach will be much smaller.....and with the swelling of my stomach it will be filling enough to sip water and protein shakes.

    Pre-op diet is a b***h

@@Miss Mac Thank you. There is no way to know if my liver is large.....he didnt do any tests to determine anything about my liver. I will try to talk to the coordinator to see if other patients are put to the same test or if he is just asking me to do this. It makes no sense to me. I dont believe I could last an entire month without cheating with some meals here and there.....which makes me question my inner strength .... I feel like this journey is like a long battle against my current ways of thinking and acting...and I will need to battle through it all to retrain my brain and find a new normal.....it doesnt help that I feel defeated before I have even gotten to the starting line. I know that so many other people have made it through this battle to the other side and that does give me strength b/c I think if so many others found desire and drive to battle through then I should be able to also.....it is just so much easier said than done.... Thanks for listening. Aloha.

    Pre-op diet is a b***h

@@BLERDgirl and @@GutBgone Thank you for your reply. I appreciate it. I live in Hawaii and this DR is the only DR that performs the surgery on my island and is covered by my insurance....otherwise I would have switched b/c he is not a fan of the sleeve. He tried very hard to convince me to do a bypass. (He tries to convince all of his patients to do a bypass unless they have less than 75 total pounds to loose.) I feel like the DR is a little mad at me for sticking with the sleeve...he made me see him 2 different times so he try to sell me on bypass before he would sign off on the sleeve to be sent into my insurance. He made me say out loud to him that I understand I am going against his first choice of a procedure. Not sure I can do it for a month.......not sure if I want to modify things without telling him by doing 2 weeks of shakes with at least 1 healthy meal and fruits/vegetables and then do 2 weeks of full liquid.....I dont want to start off everything with a lie ....but I wouldnt describe the DR as being flexible.... Thanks for listening. Aloha.

    Pre-op diet is a b***h

I just found out that I am supposed to do a 1 month 100% liquid diet....nothing solid....no yogurt...nothing carbonated.....it seems most people only have to do 1 or 2 weeks of a liquid diet.....it will be torture and I believe I will not be able to 100% stick to it. I travel a lot for work and I wanted to have the surgery during my longest break which is 12 weeks... Now that I have to suffer through 4 weeks of liquid I will only have 8 weeks to recover and be ready for a 5 week, 3 city work trip which will be a challenge. I am already overwhelmed at the changes in my "new" life and I feel like the Dr just gave me a huge new hurdle to get over....and it angers me. A month with no food seems impossible!!!

Losing Hope Sleeve Leak 8 mos post op

I am so sorry you have had such bad luck with your sleeve. It sounds like an awful experience and each time you think you are past this hurdle you find out you are not. I just had my final consult with my surgeon 2 weeks ago. He explained to me that leaks can happen and they are challenging to resolve. His policy is one attempt to fix it by using drains and a feeding tube and after that it is time to switch to a bypass. I am not suggesting you should switch to a bypass but it may be something you should discuss with your doctors. I wish you and your family the best of luck. I will keep you in my prayers.

Overnight bag? What did you pack?

You all seem to be lucky with just a 1 night stay. My DR requires 2 nights plus he makes each patient walk 1 mile the day of surgery. (He makes us walk 2 miles the day before surgery.) So for me I will add in sneakers for my laps around the unit.

Just had info submiited to insurance for approval ....

I have BCBS of Hawaii and I was also told 2 weeks. My info was submitted for approval last week. It is exciting and scary at the same time.

    Isopure drinks

I can drink the Isopure grape and alpine punch but only if they are super cold....if I have 5 ice cubes in the glass it works well for me. I am pre-surgery but I have been replacing one snack a day with about 8oz of Isopure. I also found a variety of non flavoured Protein powders at whole foods so I will try some of those to see which ones I can tolerate. I learned I do not like unjury unflavoured. I love their chocolate...but the unflavoured had a smell that I couldnt get past...... I tried GENE PRO unflavoured powder and it worked well b/c I didnt taste a thing. They sent me a sample of 2 packs for just a few dollars.

    Comfort Items

someone else in a previous post mentioned a pillow to put between their tummy and the seatbelt on the way home. I was hospitalized a few years ago for something else....and for me what was most important was a binder clip....the plug for my ipad/iphone was on the wall and i used the binder clip to hold the part that plugs into the phone/ipad ...I clipped it on the botttom sheet of my bed...up by my pillow...so I could always reach the plug to charge the phone/ipad......after that surgery I couldnt get out of bed for 24 hours so it was helpful that I could reach the charger.

    ISOPURE

I tried the grape...it wasnt great...but it wasnt awful....it gets the job done.
  15. I had what was supposed to be my final DR appointment before my sleeve was scheduled. I had an EGD last week. The DR found my reflux was really bad and he strongly suggested I switch from sleeve to bypass b/c of the refulx. He said it can get much worse when you have such a tiny tummy b/c you produce the same amount of acids as when you have a large tummy so it feels much worse. Anyone have experience on this?
  16. @@Brn2blossom I feel your pain. I have my final DR visit on Thursday and it is all I can focus on....I am having such trouble focusing on work...I keep making stupid mistakes. I wish I had suggestions on how to help. I just wanted you to know that you are not alone.
  17. @@bebop09 I could have written the same exact post. I am afraid of failure. I am afraid to admit loud to people that I had so little control that I had to have most of my stomach cut out. I dont have much faith in myself. My head is spinning. I take comfort that other people struggle with the decision also. I was at a support group 2 days ago and a woman was so happy to receive her surgery date of Dec 17th she said she cant stop talking about it with anyone who crosses her path. I wish I could be as happy and as ready as she seems. I have only told 2 people I am considering surgery. I wont tell anyone else unless I have to. I have done all the steps my insurance requires. I just had my EGD yesterday. My next appointment with my DR is Thursday and it is at that time where he will submit to insurance and make a pre op plan. I am so scared. My husband is a nurse and his thought process is that it will make me healthier and that I have had plenty of time to do it on my own and now I need the surgery. I know with my brain that he is right....but my emotional side doesnt isnt so sure I am ready to do this. I get comfort and support from many posts on this site and I am thankful for that. This can be a lonely journey. Nobody can do the work for us....we have to do it. Thanks everyone for listening.

What Every Weight Loss Surgery Candidate Should Know

@@Sara Kelly Keenan LC Thank you for this topic. At my support group everyone was all champagne and roses and I know life isnt like that. I am a planner by nature so I like to think thing through and plan for the good and the bad. I am scared and overwhelmed at the possible path of my new life. I want to hear all kinds of stories...both good and bad so I can know what I am getting into. I know I will struggle greatly at loosing my best friend (food) so the more I can work through it now the better. My final appointment to submit to insurance is about 2 weeks away. Thanks
  19. The unjury unflavored didnt do much for me...it had a smell that I couldnt get past. I tried it in applesauce and hot Cereal and couldnt tolerate it at all. I have not tried to mix it into the Choc Splendor Unjury drink which I think tastes great. This morning I tried a GENEPRO no flavored powder....it didnt have a smell which is a bonus....I mixed it in with my choc splendor unjury drink....it didnt really change the taste....it sort of left an aftertaste in my mouth for a bit...but nothing too awful.... I ordered samples of the genepro...I ordered 2 samples and they sent me 4....it cost me less than $5. It is worth trying a sample to see if you like it. Good Luck
  20. Hello Everyone.....Nov 7 is my meeting with my surgeon to go over all forms and submit to insurance....the DR said my insurance would come back within 2 weeks and then I will get a date. I am so overwhelmed with all of the details and trying to think about how my new life will be. I compare it to waking up one day and living in Mars. I looked at the post op meal plan and I cant phathom 2 teaspoons of pureed tuna fish for a meal.....I cant picture not being able to gulp down a bottle of Water in 30 seconds.....how do you chew your meal until it is like applesauce in your mouth.....the NUT told me I would hardly be able to swallow my pills/vitamins and to get chewable everything..... Please tell me there are other people out there whose heads are spinning just like mine......everyone seems so excited and ready.....I am scared out of my mind!! I have talked to a few people at a support group and they are all sunshine and roses...I ask what their struggles were and they seem to not have any....I just dont buy it...... I know I will get through this....but I would love to hear from other people who are scared like me so I feel like I am not alone....and I would love to hear from some people who are past this bumpy section ~~~ maybe you have tips that will help me get through this phase and prepare for life on Mars. Thank you.
  21. Has anyone found a place that sells samples of the GENEPRO? I would want to try a sample before buying the large bag. I tried the unjury sample of unflavoured...and I couldnt tolerate it ..I tried it in applesauce, cream of wheat and Water...and it didnt work for me. I hope the Genepro is a better option. Thanks
  22. @@Bouff That is funny.......it is a good way to think about it....that Mars is my new normal..... I am still pretty freaked out b/c any diet I have ever tried I have always been faithful for a while and then went back to the old bad eating habits......with my new Mars life there is no turning back......which is the scary part....it is the right move for me, I know that.....but it still scared the crap out of me. Thank you everyone for your thoughts and your support. I appreciate it.
  23. I would say you can kiss my not that big ass....unless there is an MD in your title keep your opinion to yourself.
