How many people kept Weight Loss Surgery a secret ?
Jess55 replied to shorty54's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm a private person and have told very few people I had surgery. I had the band 4.5 years ago and want to convert to sleeve due to vomiting and insufficient weight loss. Maybe after I get to goal I may tell someone, but honestly right now I am not telling anyone. I really don't even want to tell my parents, but I need someone to drive me to the hospital and watch my dogs overnight, otherwise I wouldn't even tell them. And I'm not telling them until I have a date. -
Dr. Ahmad vs Dr. Brathwaite (Long Island, NY) PLEASE HELP
Jess55 replied to lauren8486's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Never heard of him. I used Dr. Edward Cussatti in West Islip. I had lap band surgery with him. Never had any problems with his office. He is very supportive. I was so scared to go back after not going for 3 years due to my feeling like a failure, but he was very nice when I went back. Now I've spoken with him about converting to a sleeve gastrectomy and he was very supportive with that too. So I plan to do that surgery with him. -
Sleeping on your side right after surgery?
Jess55 replied to MissLiss's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
After I had lap band I think I started sleeping on my side the same night. I'm normally a side or stomach sleeper. Yes it was a bit painful, but I cannot stay asleep on my back. For some reason I'll fall asleep, but wake up like 20 minutes later when I try to sleep on my back -
I'm hoping to revise from band to sleeve in June. I already had a planned one week stay action before I decided to do this, so I'm hoping I can have surgery that week. My question is, when I had band surgery I had a pretty easy recovery, only took pain mess the first 2.5 days, and was getting bored at home by day 5. Is this surgery more painful? Is 7 days enough. I do have a physical job. And sometimes have to lift large dogs and such, I'm an LVT. I am not telling anyone at work about surgery, I'll just tell them I can't lift because I hurt my back or something. So I'm just curious if I'll be in more pain.

Any MedSurg Nurses who've been sleeved?
Jess55 replied to elladvyne's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
While I'm not a human nurse, I am a LVT (licensed veterinary technician). I work ER , 10 hours shifts. I rarely get a real break. I'm not sleeved yet, but I do have band currently (which I hope to be revising in June). That is the real hard part for me. I don't get to sit down to eat. My surgeon is like you have to sit down for at least 20 minutes to eat. It's the law. Yeah sure, when we are slammed and pets are crashing, I'll get right on that. Which is I think the problem is why I graze at work. This is something I have to work on. -
band removal n revision to sleeve....any complications w sleeve
Jess55 replied to f1stborn2014's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
In the same boat. I had my band in dec 2010. I haven't lost that much and still need to lose 50-60lb. I keep vomiting and am miserable. I spoke with my doc today about revising to the sleeve (or bypass). Which he reccomendation the sleeve for me. He actually removed ALL my fluid today (which I was not expecting). Now I am worried about gaining. I haven't gained in a bit but I haven't lost either. He said he is doing more and more band to sleeve revisions. I really hope due ton he go it to g complication my insurance will ok the procedure. I can't afford it myself and as of right now I don't qualify for it. Bmi is 35 with no comorbidities. He did say it would be slightly more risky due to the scar tissue the band has caused, but said it should be ok. Keeping my fingers crossed. -
I know usually when I work out I'm less hungry. My trainer/instructer/friend always tells me to go home and eat after my high intensity kickboxing class, but most of the time I'm not hungry.

My honest opinion, if you're having second thoughts. Wait. I WISH I had not had the surgery, not because I've had any negative side effects. I have only PB'd once and never gotten truly stuck. Felt things going down real slow at times and I will not pretend I was not in pain, but I don't think (from reading) I was truly stuck). I don't really have much of anything in my band (because I don't want it). I feel the surgery did change my life in it changed the way I eat and gave me a true love for working out. But if I had to do it again, I would not do it. And if given the opportunity I would have my band removed in a heartbeat. I don't go back to my doctor because last time I did he wanted to give me a fill because I was kind of plateauing (which I still kind of am), but I have no desire to lose weight that way. I worry about the risk of slip (though it probably would be real hard and probably no big deal with virtually nothing in my band.) I also worry about erosion. Jeez I kind of wish I knew about that pre op, since that would be one reason I did not want bypass due to possible septic peritonitis if your GI contents leak. So yeah, my recommendation is wait and try harder changing your life the right way (like I wish I did).

My surgeon had never told me like I could not have an MRI or anything. I just want to check though, there should not be any metal in the port of anything right? I've been having knee pain for the past 4 months and finally went to the doc and am having an MRI on Tuesday. I just want to double check that there's no metal in me to interfere with the MRI. I've been close to the MRI machine at work and have never felt a pull on my abdomen. I have had my glasses being pulled away from my face due to the MRI. But I've never been under it to be sure nothing will pull in my abdomen. So let me know if anyone else has had an MRI. Thanks. BTW, I won't call my doc since I have not been back there in over a year and will feel very awkward. Thanks!

Good. I did not think there was, but someone once mentioned metal clips in the port. Not sure if some of them have this or not. Thanks guys!

I started back on the elliptical at just over 2 weeks post op. I had a quick recovery though. As long as you feel ok, I say go for it.
-
I would say walking would be fine immediately. I started back on the elliptical a little over 2 weeks post op. Got the ok from my doc when I went for my post op at 9 days, but didn't go right away. I was told not lifting til like 4-5 weeks post op. I wasn't a gym rat before surgery, but I am not (or maybe not so much gym as a kickboxing addict..LOL)

I've kind of wanted to start jogging. I have not tried C25K but I've done it by jogging in intervals. Unfortunately I don't think it's really good for me. I've been having problems with my knees (more so my right) and I've found that jogging on the pavement makes my knees hurt more. I did do warrior dash last month and I enjoyed it and had no real problems jogging on the dirt. So maybe I need to find a dirt trail somewhere I can jog on.

I "liked" the gym motivational quotes and cut and jacked on Facebook. They have some awesome motivational workout quotes.

Great Job!! It's great when you realize you've changed. I've found that it is better to work out your emotions by working out. I had the worst day 1.5 months ago when I had to say goodbye to my dog of nearly 15 years. She meant the world to me. But instead of going and eating junk, I went to my kickboxing class and did 2 classes. It made me temporarily forget my pain. Also my trainer who was teaching the first class knew she needed to give me a great class to forget my pain..LOL This is what I do now. And I love it!

I'm an LVT so my job is physical. If I had taken 4 weeks I would have gone crazy. I went back on day 7, but felt ready on day 5

Well the OP did not say "I told the trainer I was in pain and he just yelled at me to push harder" or something to that effect. She said the trainer just said faster and don't stop, so how would the trainer have known there was a problem? And that was just during a fitness assessment not during any personal training. Me personally, I was fat for so long and, did not do a lot of stuff. I spent my teenage years being an outcast (not because I was morbidly obese at the time, but because I, well I'm not sure why), and then in my 20's I wasted my life being fat. Had surgery at 28. So I've made it my goal to let NOTHING stop me, a bit pain is welcomed.
-
Why would you find a different trainer. One same said the trainer was nice afterwards. Two the trainer was doing what she was supposed to be doing, which is pushing you. I know when I train with someone I am much more encouraged not to give up. I NEED someone to push me to my full potential. I can be to easy on myself sometimes.

Any kid of activity. I did the Warrior Dash a few weeks ago. Had a blast doing it and though it was a little bit of a workout. (Running, crawling, climbing, etc.) It did not feel like one, it was just fun. I'm going to do the Survival Race next (very similar to Warrior Dash). One of the woman who I went with posted about the Adirondack Adventure, which looks like fun. It even entails zip lining. I'm trying to venture out and try new things lately. It's exercise while having fun and being around friends.
-
My honest opinion is just to keep doing them. All exercises bother you at first, but eventually you get used to them.
-
Really??? 10 lb in 5 weeks and you want faster?! A fill is not gonna make you lose weight. The band may help you but in the end it is still your choices that make the weight come off.
-
Personally I think that may be a good choice to go with the sleeve. I have a class 3 malocclusion. Which mean my teeth don't meet in the back which makes it difficult to chew things well. Unfortunately I did not think of this pre banding. I knew my teeth didn't meet, but I never knew what it was called til recently. I've realized that I never should have gotten the band, I only have 0.75 ml in my band, but still if I'm eating chicken I tend to feel it go down and it sort of gets stuck. So this is one reason I am not looking for restriction and I'm just trying to lose weight without the band

@ Brenty. I have started taking glucosamine/chondroiton. I think it helps. For weeks before starting it, my knee kept popping/cracking (it wasn't painful during that)when bending walking up stairs or during squats and like a few hours after my first dose the popping stopped. Coincidence, maybe but I'm still taking it. As for finding my groove, yeah, I do give a little credit to the band, so that's why I'm not 100% against it, but I still would remove it in a heartbeat. As for pushing myself I LOVE feeling sore the next day. Yes, I may say, OMG I'm so sore, but in reality I love it. It means I've had an excellent workout and my muscles are working to rebuild themselves. I do a bootcamp class on Sundays and that usually makes me really sore, so I usually use Monday as my off day. Thoguh this week, I am not taking a day off. Because I can't kick box on Saturday because I'm going to do the Warrior Dash in Jersey, so I didn't want to lose a class. Yeah I may be certifiably insane. LOL

Kickboxing mostly. Occasionally a walk/jog Occasionally elliptical Starting biking a little bit. Also a bootcamp class on Sundays Also train with a trainer in train to failure one day per week. (Luckily, I think because we are now friends and she likes me she doesn't charge me..Bonus!)
