    yes's and no's

I agree with others, it is a personal decision. I have been dieting for about 6 years now and I always end up sabatoging myself. I lost 70 lbs with JC and then gained most of it back. 6 years ago a coworker had gastric bypass and then I went for a consult, but then decided I did not like the side efeects of it, and decided to go on a diet instead and I have been trying ever since and sbatoging myself along the way. Last year another coworker had the lap band and he started losing quite a bit of weight and I again decided to try this route. The lap band is a lot safer (IMO) than bypass. I think personally if I can just keep myself from sabatoging myself I can do this.
  2. That is great that you are able to do that. Me, I would not be abe to afford that and I would be bored out of my mind and probably end up sabatoging myself.

    Free samples

Very good to know, I am going to try to e-mail them
  4. I've been very good about not drinking when I eat. I have not been good about giving up soda yet. My surgery will be in December, so I really have to start soon. Thank you for the advice, I will really try to maybe put half of it on a plate and put the other half away.
  5. When I eat sometimes, I get full like halfway through and instead of listening and stop eating, I continue to finish my meal. Then when I get up I feel like crap. I don't know why I do this and I know I cannot post band, or else I will vomit or whatever. Does anyone else do this and have any advice to stop eating?
  6. I want to start trying out some protein shakes/supplements. I had gone to vitamin world a couple months ago, but all they had were huge containers of protein powder, I don't want to buy that and find out I don't like it. I heard some place have samples. I thought one was unjury, at least my nutritionist I went to said they had samples, but I could not find it on their website. So any ideas would be great.
  7. I am not in corrections, but I too have a physical job. I am a licensed vet tech and have to pick up dogs and bend over and get on the floor to work sometimes. As of right now, I plan on taking a week, but will talk to the surgeon about it at my last appointment. I mean I will definitely have to tell my supervisor that I probably shouldn't pick up large dogs for a week or 2 after I come back and stuff.
  8. OK, so I guess I will have to wait to go until next year. SUcks, but oh well
  9. With any luck I should be able to be banded in the beginning of December, my final month of 6 month monitored weight loss is towards the last week in November. SO I hope I can be approved quickly. I have been thinking of going to a veterinary conferance in January (I think it is like the 3rd week in Jan), so I would be maybe 6 weeks post op and should be able to eat regular food. Do you guys think it is worth the risk to have to eat out all the time for 5 days, or should I just wait until next year to go? I do not want to end up sabatoging myself. ANy advice would be fantastic.
  10. So far, I have only told my mother and this guy I have worked with for a long time, who I trust. I will be telling my dad, sister and her fiance (only because I know my sister will tell him), I am going to tell my supervisor when I give my time off request, only because I have a physical job and will probably have to limit lifting and stuff for a couple weeks and I don't want her to think I am slacking. I'm don't think I am going to really let it out right away, I may eventually tell, but not right now.
  11. I was told by my surgeon that the fills were not covered and they are $100 per fill and he told me that he has no plans to raise that fee any time soon, I feel that it won't be that bad as he said you go every month for the first year post op, then like 3 or 6 (can't remeber) times the second year and then it is like yearly or something. My insurance has changed since he told me that though, so I am curious if this insurance covers it. My next appointment with the PA is next Tuesday, so I may try to ask her if she knows.
  12. I think the hard part about stopping soda is the fact that besides water (usually only at the gym) and wyler's (bascially tha same as crystal light, but I like the taste better)raspberry flavor, it is the only thing I drink. I don't like ice tea, or stuff and I don't drink alcohol, yeah, so it will only leave 2 things I drink and basically only one, since I only drink plain water at the gym.
  13. Why exactly is carbonation not allowed? And is it going to be forever? just curious
  14. So I am doing my 6 month supervised diet. I went on vacation and gained some weight. I think I am still going to be up by a couple pounds by the time my next weigh in is. Is this going to be detrimental to me? I have lost like 3-4 pounds every month so far (this will be my 4th weigh in).
  15. Thanks, I hopped back on today. Ate well, went to the gym, did cardio and the weights, and got some more activity on my Wii playing tennis. So hopefully I can be almost where I was at by my appointment, I may still be up though, but I will be closer.
  16. I hate to tell you, but if you are going through your insurance most likely you will need a six month supervised diet prior to your surgery
  17. The surgeon never said to me that I needed to lose a certain amount of weight in order to have the surgery. So I assume that I don't

    Newbie Q and A! :c)

I will give a shot at answering you, from what I have learned from being on the forums and stuff. I am not banded yet, still in the pre op process. PB - is a productive burp, from what I can tell it is a burp or a regurgitation that brings up some food or stomach acid or stuff. So it is not actual vomitting. Bandster Hell - I gather this is the period of time after you got your band and before you get restriction, when basically you only have will power keeping you going. You are going to be hurngry, but if you follow the rules, can't eat that much, so you are in hell trying to force yourself not to eat. Slider foods are foods that are soft and can go right past the band. Yogurt, ice cream, cottage cheese. Things of that nature that will not keep you full, but will give you calories. As for Diet coke, this is something I still haven't given up, as I love it too. They say you should not drink it. I saw somewhere that the gas could expand your pouch. I also saw somewhere that that was a myth. I also might have seen somewhere that you may be able to have it later on. I am not sure the exact reason you are not supposed to drink soda or if you have to cut it out for good. Best to let someone else answer that one. I don't think I have seen anywhere that you can't have caffeine. I beleive you can have coffee, I don't drink it, so not really sure. Unfortunately for me Diet Coke is my only real caffeine source, so when I give it up, I might have to find something else that has caffeine in it. As for Lap band vs. Bypass. I knew a person that had lap band and one that had bypass. They both did well, though I haven't see the guy with the lap band in a while, so not sure if he lost all the weight. Bypass worries me. I do not like the idea of having things cut up inside I am a LVT, basically a nurse for animals and I have seen animals that had to have foreign bodies removed and their intestines sutured back together. At the site it every so often breaks down and their waste leaks into their abdomen and they get really sick. So I think of that and I get worried. Also the idea of dumping syndrome and never being able to eat a piece of chocolate again. I'm sorry but not for me. I do not want to feel deprived for life. So that is my opinion. Lap band you have to eat less, but you can eat what you want in moderation after time. As for your friends I have only told my mom and a guy I have worked with for many years and I trust. Both of them were very supportive. I am kind of worried to tell other people for the same fear. But I will tell them in time and I will just have to remember I am doing this for me and no one else and what they think does not matter to me. Deep down it does because I am a very sensitive person, due to things that have happened to me, but I have to keep telling myself that it doesn't matter what they think. I hope this helps and hopefully other people will post and maybe help you more.
  19. I would just get all the info she requested from you primary Doctor. If you don't get it, I would think it may end up being canceled, because many time WBC increased means an infection. So if yours is normally increased then you probably will have to prove that, so they don't think that you have an infection.

    More Insurance Woes

I had a similar issue. I was told initially that having done WW in the past year for 6 months would cover my 6 month medically supervised diet. They said it in the seminar and the surgeon said this when I first met him. I went to my second appointment and they said they weren't sure about that it would suffice, then a few days after the appointment I got a call saying that it wasn't usable and I would have to do the 6 month diet. I was really pissed off, as I had planned to be able to get my surgery in September. Well, now the earliest I can get it is in December, (my last appointment will be late November).
  21. I had mine today too. Was so quick, I got the IV the O2 and told to lie on my side and I remeber seeing the Dr with the endoscope and then I was out. I really thought I would feel something like the propofol going in or something. Then I woke up, my mom was with me when I woke up and she said I was talking to her a few minutes before, but I have no recollection of that, I hope I didn't say anything weird...LOL. Then we left. I was really unsteady, I now know why they make you have someone take you home, I never would have made it on my own. I went back to sleep for like an hour when I got home because I was so tired. I actually still feel a little groggy when I stand up, but nothing bad. My throat is a teeny bit sore, but nothing horrible. Only thing I am kind of annoyed about is that a couple minutes ago I noticed that they hadn't taken the EKG pads off me. I had assumed they did and was so out of it never noticed. So I just took them off and I have red marks from them. I wish they had told me that they did not take them off.

    Weight Gain!!!

I have not been banded yet, but when I diet, I have found that sometimes I have to eat more in order to lose weight, if I eat to little I do not lose. I kind of wonder if this will be the same as when I get banded.
  23. I believe it is to make sure you don't have any ulcers that could make erosion more possible. Also they said they would take a culture for H pylori (helicobator pylori) a bacteria that can more you more susceptable to ulcers. Also they probably want to make sure they see your anatomy, so there are no surprises, (I would think)
  24. From a quick google search, I take it EGD is esophagogastroduodenoscopy. Well if that is the case I am refferring to it as an upper GI endoscopy. And I am also having mine tomorrow. Mine is going to be in my gastroenterologists office. I am slightly nervous. I am going to be sedated. Now I have seen tons of animals sedated, but have never been myself, I've never even had an IV before. I trust everything will go well, for you and for me. I had to have someone drive me home, so my mom is coming over tomorrow to take me there and drive me home.
  25. I am looking forward to Feeling better about myself. Being able to fit in airplane seats. (Flying in 2.5 weeks and dreading the squish) As other people said- My boobs shrinking. I hate them and I will still need to get a lift after, but hopefully they will be smaller. Wearing other clothes besides jeans and a t-shirt because I hate shopping right now, so I never look for anything. I probably will still hate shopping, but maybe I can dress a little better Not sure if this will happen- but I would like to get some friends that live close to me that see me for who I am and not what I look like. Also maybe one day have a boyfriend. Oh I totally can't wait til my legs don't touch.
