Hurricane Irene!! What will I eat???
Jess55 replied to FryeMama's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm in NY and I got a hurricane preparedness letter at my door today. Really? I'm sure it will fizzle out by the time it gets that far north. Who knows though in 3 days or so I could just have to eat my words. LOL -
December 2010 Bandsters out there?
Jess55 replied to GardenGal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm sorry, I just had to post! I'm so happy this morning! I broke through my thee week (would've been 4 week) plateau!! I'm just so happy, it was really depressing me! I lost 1.4lb since my last low weight I tracked. Not sure what did it. I did start eating more yesterday, but the scale was actually down yesterday morning, so that couldn't really be it, but whatever it was I'll take it. I've bumped my calories up from 1200 to 1400, because as I was discussing in another thread that with my body media fit, I've discovered my deficit is to high. Actually yesterday in order to have a acceptable deficit I would have needed to eat about 2000 calories, and I still would've had a 1000 calorie deficit. I'm not going to go that crazy, but I'm going to play around with it. -
Did you have food in your stomach? I get really nauseas when I took them on an empty stomach. I take gummy vitamins now though, for some reason with the pill form I kept forgetting to take them.
-
You don't need a prescription. Just buy it online. My bluetooth model I got on amazon.com for $219, was like $244 after shipping and tax. I chose the year long commitment for the subscription so $6.95 a month (not bad). I'll definitely look for the 100 calorie packs reverie, thanks. Dave, I'll consider what you said, but I'm still gonna up my calories at least 100 or 200 this week. I really dso now think I'm in starvation mode.
-
absolutely! i've been reading online and most of what I've read says not to go over a 1000 calorie deficit> and it seems to say, like 500 under your bmr and 500 in exercise. So I'm going to try this. I need to do something and I've probably killed my metabolism from having this kind of deficit for so long. Also you said you limit any foods you eat. I haven't either, if I want a chip, I will have them, problem is I find it had to stop. WHich is why I don't buy them, but if they are at work, I'll eat them. I'm really hoping that this works. Maybe I'll try some nuts since they are healthy for you, I need to find them in individual servings though, since I know I would not be able to control myself with a whole bag. I'll go to costco or something.
-
Ok, so in I guess I am eating to little with that beig of a deficit. I'm going to try to up my calories and see where it goes. I'm going to do it slowly though I don't want to jump from 1200-1300 to 1800 overnight so we'll see. I mean I just came back from my kickboxing class and I burned 580 calories, so with what reverie says I already have my deficit for the day and I should eat whatever else I burn (not going to today, but you know). I know I should be happy about the 1.5 lb, but I'm just so not. Oldiebutgoodie, a bodymedia is the same basically as a bodybugg. Not sure if you watch the biggest loser (I don't) but apparently that's what they use on the show. You wear it all the time and it tells you exactly how much your body burns calorie wise. So you know how much you need to eat and stuff. You can get it online. I couldn't find any stores that sell it (at least the Bluetooth model). A bit pricey and you need to have a subscription for using it, but so far I like it and it seems much more accurate than my polar HR monitor (at least during kickboxing where my HR kept saying zero because of jumping and stuff
-
is that including workouts? Because even though I wasn't wearing it the whole day I had like a 1700 calorie deficit. (My job is such that I'm on my feet my whole shift and walking around, bending and lifting, I'm an LVT, basically a nurse for animals) That includes my workout that burned over 500 calories. Doesn't a 500 calorie deficit only make you lose one pound per week? I'm guessing you mean that is without workouts and get the other 500 from working out. So maybe I truly do need to eat more.I'm going to see what happened today and tomorrow morning (my weigh in) because this morning the scale had actually moved (my official weigh in is Thursday, so it doesn't count today). after today, we'll see what my calorie burn actually is (though today is usually my day off, but I'm covering at work, but it's a short shift so may not truly reflect my normal work day) and maybe I'll try to eat more tomorrow. If I do need to eat more, do you have any suggestions on healthy things to eat, because I do not want to start eating the wrong things due to this. I have a recheck appointment next Thursday with my surgeon and as of right now, I' dreading going since my loos in the past 5 weeks has been 1.5 lb which is very sad to me and I'm sure he'll be supportive, but I don't like it. Also my sister is getting married in November and I had hopes of being like 170 by then, since this plateau it's not gonna happen. Maybe if I do increase my calories, my weight will drop quick, not sure. I always like your advice reverie, so I'd love to hear more.

Abs, I would wait til at least 3 if not 4 weeks, my doc cleared me for cardio, when I asked at my 9 day post op appointment, but said no weights or anything like that for like 2 more weeks. An incision takes a minimum of 10-14 days to fully close, so doing it to soon could risk opening it up
-
How soon after surgery can you do stomach exercises?
Jess55 replied to healthierme72's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
3 months is ample time to start ab exercises. I totally would not recommend doing crunches at 12 days out. an incision takes at the minimum 14 days to close. you are risking opening up your incision and a hernia. My doc gave the ok for cardio when I asked 9 days post op, he said weights and stuff wait til 4 weeks out. -
I've been stuck at 191 for almost 4 weeks now and it's killing me!!! I'm getting so frustrated and depressed and I dread going in for my check up with my surgeon, since I've lost virtually nothing since the last visit. Just got a body media fit to try to see where I'm going wrong. Crossing my fingers it helps.

December 2010 Bandsters out there?
Jess55 replied to GardenGal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm so sorry Joan! I hope the slip fixes itself. I know you've had issues with being to tight. Do they think that's what caused it? I got my body media fit while I was at work yesterday, so I set it up last night and put it on this am, I hope this will give me some insight into why the scale is not moving, for almost 4 weeks now. I have an appointment next thursday and as of now I've only lost like 1.5lbs since my last one (it will be 6 weeks between visits), I had one scheduled at the 4 week mark, but rescheduled it since the scale had barely moved and I felt awful going in with virtually no loss. But it looks like it's gonna be that way anyways, since there's been no change since then. I do not want to face my doc with only this 1.5lb loss in 6 weeks!!! I'm sure he'll still be supportive. I mean I haven't changed my eating habits since my last visit and if anything I'm exercising the same amount, if not more. So I'm not sure what the heck is going on. Like I said hopefully this will tell me, I just gotta make sure I'm honest with myself and write down EVERYTHING that goes in my mouth, something I have not fully done before. So we'll see, I'm really hoping I can lose at least one before then if not I'm gonna be devastated, gotta get over this plateau, it's killing me. Not sure if stress has anything to do with it., because I've been stressed about my dog, but she's doing a bit better so maybe that will help. -
When will I feel normal??
Jess55 replied to pinagul0tta's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm not sure what to tell you, except I hope you guys feel better soon. My first day, I wanted to crawl in a hole, my second day was much better, third was even better and I went out shopping on day 4 (or 3, but I think it was 4), the only problem I had that day was a little nausea when I was out. I only felt the shoulder pain when I was sitting down. Still sore for the next number of days getting in and out of bed and such. But I had a pretty quick recovery. Only took the pain meds the first 2 days, and once day 3 and that was just because I got my period and I get bad cramps and I didn't need that with the pain...lol But I hope you guys feel better soon. -
Problems with Constipation - prior to surgery
Jess55 replied to YolandaSready's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
When I had my consult with the gastroenterologist, I mentioned that I'd been constipated for a long time, usually going once, maybe twice a week. I had taken a laxative once a week, but read that long term use can lead to liver problems. She recommended polyethylene glycol (the ingredient in miralax), gave me a script for a 6 months supply for it. So I assumed I could stay on it. I now use the store brand of it, and take it most days. Otherwise I'd be back to being uncomfortable and going that infrequently was somewhat painful too. I'm curious if there is an underlying cause for the constipation. -
Since I saw this thread I started using my Wii again, to supplement my workouts. How much I've been working out I cannot use this as my sole workout because I can't burn enough calories or get my HR high enough. But for someone who is just starting it would be great. I love on wii sports the tennis (maybe I'll have to find an all tennis game). I pretend I'm actually playing tennis (probably over exaggerated though..LOL) and I bob around and move and stuff, it gives me a decent workout. Playing the games though I work up a pretty good sweat. I also love the Michael Jackson the experience game (big MJ fan here). I have Just Dance 2 also, haven't played it in a while. Also EA sports active, and Wii Fit plus, should start using those again. Maybe I'll try it after work tonight, because I was planning on doing a wii workout after anyways, since I have a short shift today, only 6 hours. Yeah so the Wii is good. I finally saw someone playing the Xbox Kinect though and it looked awesome too.

I gave up my diet coke a couple months before I was banded, honestly it was easier than I thought it would be. I do drink it on occasion, but they do not really taste as good as they used to anymore. There is a woman in my office who is banded that I see drinking diet coke a lot. She is still losing.

I'm 8 months out and I only had one tiny fill at 5 months, which really didn't do anything, so I feel like I have no fill. I've never gotten stuck or PB'd or anything. I can eat a larger portion, but feel very uncomfortable when I do, and there is no way I could eat as much as I could pre band in one sitting. I got the small fill originally because I was getting hungry more often, but it didn't really change anything except the fact that it seems like post the fill if I try to eat a normal Breakfast I feel overly full, so I've just started doing Protein shakes. I've been bouncing between 3 pounds since just before I went on vacation 3 weeks ago, so I'm not sure what's going on. I've been eating the same and working out the same, but nothing is working. I decreased my carbs 2 days ago, so we'll see what happens with that. I also ordered a body media fit, so we'll see what that tells me. I'm wondering if it has to do with stress/depression. I've been both stressed and depressed about my dog. She has cancer and is urinating all over my house, so I've been having issues with that. Sorry to go off subject. But yeah, basically no fill, and even though I get hungry and i'm plateauing I'm not sure if a fill would really help. Water tides me over, and I stick to the portions, so I don't need to feel more restricted. And frankly I do not want to have to say goodbye to certain foods.

I ended up buying it on amazon wenesday. Has been shipped and should be here Monday. I'm hoping it gives me some good info to kickstart my losing again. Got the Bluetooth one

HELP! Not Losing Weight. Frustrated.
Jess55 replied to ~Sabrina K~'s topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hmmm... Interesting about the plateau. I am almost 8 months out and I have been jumping back and forth between 191.6-189 for the past 3 weeks and I can't seem to budge. I'm eating 1200 calories. But it seems my Protein has been decreasing and my carbs have been increasing lately, so I'm going to try to switch that this week and see if it helps. I have a appointment in 2 weeks and if I've only lost 2 pounds by then, I'm going to cry. It will have been in 6 weeks since my last visit. I gotta get the moving. I've added in a Protein Drink for Breakfast to get my protein up and I haven't been eating breakfast because when I do I feel crappy, not stuck, but just crappy. I think it started really on my one and only fill 3 months ago of 0.75 cc. I may want to switch up my calories because I work out 6 days a week and not sure if maybe I need more or not. But I ordered a body media fit (should be here Monday) and I want to see what that tells me before I change things like that. -
December 2010 Bandsters out there?
Jess55 replied to GardenGal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just wanted to let you know Dave, I tried the shake last night, tasted decent, to me the injury tastes better, but I still liked it. Had one for breakfast this morning and it actually tasted better than last night (weird), so I'll do this for a while and see what happens. Not sure if I should mention to my doc when I go in next time about having a protein shake for breakfast because he doesn't want me having liquid calories, but maybe I'll mention it because the fact that eating in the morning makes me feel awful for a few hours. -
Pre-op diet makes me wonder
Jess55 replied to ROTJob's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A diet of shakes isn't sustainable fore the long road. You'd eventually see that if you stay on that low low calorie diet for a couple of weeks your body will get mad and stop losing. And once you add food back in your body will hang on to it for a little bit until it realizes it is not being starved anymore. But if you think you can do it with real food, I would totally push back the surgery and give it a shot. Have you never dieted before? -
It really has nothing to do with lap band. Obese people are more prone to sleep apnea since there is a lot of fat and can be a lot around the neck. WHich can compress the trachea causing the skipped breaths. They want to make sure if you do have sleep apnea you are able to continue breathing as you are recovering from anesthesia. Since you will be on your back, once they extubate you they want to be sure your airway is open and you can breathe. With animals we do not extubate them until basically they are coughing the ET tube out and making sure they can swallow and everything so that they don't vomit and aspirate. I assume they don't wait this long with people because it may be traumatic (not sure, if at this point you would remember)

Can't stay off the scale
Jess55 replied to Mmueller329's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
the first 6 weeks are about healing. it is normal not to lose. I lost my first week, then I went up and down 2 pounds for the next 3-4 weeks. Frusterating? Yes, but week 5 I started losing again. You just lost 11lbs, your body is adjusting to that and recovering from surgery. If you can put the scale away for now, or don't get discouraged from the numbers. -
Energy level increased post-surgery?
Jess55 replied to faz1988's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Have you had a sleep study? Supposedly sleep apnea can make you very tired during the day due to not sleeping well at night. If you did, I think my energy has gone up a little bit since losing some weight. I used to sleep til like noon. I'd wake up at like 8 something, have a little something to eat, then go back to sleep, and wake up at noonish and go to the gym (somedays). Now usually I wake up at 8:30 (6:30 when I have work early one day a week) and if I try to sleep in I feel tired the rest of the day. Though today I did sleep late, I was busy all day yesterday and my sleep was short. But that is not my norm -

Yeah I take the fiber gummies as well. -
I understand no potatoes, but no CARROTS?
Jess55 replied to 14isabella's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think, as others have pointed out, that it may just be the risk of getting stuck. I eat carrots and hummus. I have barely any fill, and have never gotten stuck, but I can see how carrots raw can get stuck as I find them hard to chew fine enough, so I find myself swallowing chunks and probably if I had more of a fill they would get stuck. (Though my mouth sucks, can only really chew well on my left side due to my bite) So maybe others can chew better than me.
