Upcoming Surgery - Food Restriction Fears
kimba999 replied to amf1122jr's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Adam, I had my surgery on 6/1/10 and have lost 51 lbs since. I've found that after healing, I can eat virtually anything but just not very much of it or very fast. If I eat too quickly, it comes back up. I avoid pretty much all of those things you mentioned for the most part because they aren't conducive to losing weight. I do eat pizza but it's a very thin crust. I don't like to eat very much bread because it sits like a stone in my stomach so when I do eat it, I eat small amounts and chew very carefully. I've found that lots of quality protein, good complex carbs - veggies and whole grains, and low fat is the best bet and it works. Good luck! -
Just got banded 5/25! Anyone else on or close to this date so we can be buddies?

Yeah, my port site is still sore. I can feel it easily under my skin as well. It doesn't hurt when I'm laying on my back but if I lay on my side, it hurts a lot. I think because my stomach is pushing out and pulling on it. If I hug a pillow to my abdomen, it helps. I think it's pretty normal and I doubt you'll be able to see it when you're all healed up. -

Hey Sloan - my port site is really sore. I think now that the swelling and blockage have gone down, it's the worst part now. It hurts badly when I'm lying down but very little when sitting or standing. I can't wait to be able to lie on my stomach again! -

Thanks Lil - a couple of hours after I wrote you, I think the swelling went down a bit because I was actually able to keep down about a half of a cup of Protein shake. That was more than I've had all week combined! Good luck with your appointment! -
Help! I was banded on 6/1 and left the hospital the same day. They had me eating ice chips but nothing else. I felt really horrible pressure in my abdomen and assumed it was the gas everyone talks about. When I went home, I tried to drink water and a little bit of protein shake but when I took even tiny sips of anything, I'd get that pressure and PB everything up. I couldn't even keep a teaspoon of the pain and anti-vomiting meds down. Called my doc and he had me to to the E.R. and i spent the next 3 1/2 days in the hospital getting IV fluids and dilaudid and trying to sip small amounts of water and warm tea. When I vomit/PB, it's always lots of foamy saliva along with whatever I just tried to drink. Doc said it was due to excess swelling at the band site. I feel like it's completely blocked and with gas sitting on top. Anyways, some of the stuff must have been getting through because i had two small BMs on Friday night and then on Saturday i managed to drink some water and a little broth so my doc sent me home. Now I'm wondering what the hell I've gotten myself into...I keep throwing up everything but very small amounts. I've eaten probably less than 1000 calories in the past week and have thrown up most of those! I've lost 10 pounds since Tuesday! I'm worried about dehydration and weakness. I can't sleep well. This sucks. Anyone, please help with some ideas, thoughts, advice!

Banded 6/1/10. can't keep anything down!

Thanks. Just a couple of hours ago, I started feeling some relief. I managed to slowly drink a small amount of Protein powder mixed in with about 3/4 cup of non-fat milk and nothing came up for over an hour and when it did, it was a small amount. For the last five days, I would drink a small sip of even Water or tea (I'm talking about less than a teaspoon) and I would get immediate painful pressure that radiated into my upper back and then up it would come. I think I've turned a corner and am very happy. I was getting depressed and worried about dehydration and dreading the idea of going back to the hospital for more IV fluids! -

Hi Brad, Nope. And they didn't even have me drink a cup of Water before I was discharged which - as I found out when I came back to the ER that night - is standard procedure. This is a hospital that specializes in weight loss surgery! -

Hi Lil! I just got banded on 6/1 and I've been having the same kinds of problems with swelling and throwing up saliva! Yours is the first post I've seen on here that described the same experience as mine. I went back to the hospital about 12 hours after I left from my surgery and was there another 3 1/2 days getting IV fluids and pain meds. So did the swelling just go down on it's own or what? Were you throwing up a lot? I feel like maybe a tiny percentage of what I'm swallowing (and that isn't much) is making it through the band. I've been getting really worried and desparate but your post gave me some hope. Would love to be band buddies!
