I am new to this site and not really sure what to write here so the reader's digest version . . .  I decided about a year ago that it was time for me to get serious about losing weight and being healthy.  I used to say I was born fluffy and I'll die fluffy.  I'm not saying that anymore.  I applied for the surgery with Kaiser (Denver, CO)  I had to undergo an MRI to verify I have bulging discs from a car accident.  I am lucky I don't have high blood pressure, diabetes, bad cholesteral but, I do have alpha 1 and decided that between the back issues and lung issues I am hoping surgery helps me beat those diseases.  Kaiser approved me within 8-10 weeks of my application.  I spent 8 months waiting.  I never thought my time would come but 7 weeks ago I got a phone call from Rita (the benefits coordinator) and a week later I had a meeting with the psychologist and then started their surgery connections class.  My last class was Tuesday, May 18, 2010.  Today (May 20, 2010) I had my meeting with nurse and my surgery is now officially scheduled for July 19, 2010 at 7:30 a.m.For those you who have Kaiser and are considering the surgery here is what you have to do.Apply for surgery . . . wait . . . wait and wait just a tad longer.  Initial evaluation with psychologistLab work (a full panel of tests plus nicotine - Kaiser won't let you have the surgery if you are smoking - not an issue for me)6 week surgery connection class (Note: If you miss one class you have to start another series of them)Meet with Nurse Practitioner who does a health evaluation and schedules your surgery (completes your FMLA paperwork)Meet with psychologist again.2 week Diet/Nutrition classSurgery Consultation with your surgeon (I chose Dr. Thomas Brown)Pre-Surgery Evaluation (EKC - more lab work - general physical)(If you have diabetes - I don't - then you have to have a diabetes phone consultation)SurgeryAnd they told me they require 4 week post op with surgeon, 6 week post op with Kaiser including an appointment with psychologist and then follow up labs at 3, 6 and 12 months.  And of course, your fills.I'm 2 months out.  Scared and excited but ready!
