How much does the surgery cost in Mexico?
CheriCline posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I read a few people say that they went to Mexico to have the surgery done. I will have to pay at least $2,000 out of pocket for insurance preminum payment here in the U.S. and then you never know I may still be denied. I will have to see my doc for a year straight and jump though alot more hoops here than probably down there. Does anyone have any idea the cost to have it done in Mexico? -
My doc says I have to lose 20 pounds prior to surgery

Hi, By the grace of God I was approved for surgery. My date is set for January 29th. I am so excited I don't know what to do...LOL..But anyways my surgeon told me I have to lose 20 pounds before surgery date. Lets be real: its the holiday season, parties, goodies everywhere and food every corner. I have lost about 5 pounds since my first consultation. I was told I have to do a liquid diet for 10 days prior to surgery. I imagine I will lose at least 10 pounds doing that. Has anyone ever been denied at surgery date by the surgeon for not meeting his/her weight loss request? Cheri:whoo: -
Did you have to lose a certain amount of weight to be approved by your insurance?

I am just wondering how much weight you lost before your surgery? I have to see a doctor for a year prior to the surgery being approved by insurance. I was told that they want me to lose some weight to "show" I can lose weight. I have gone down ten pounds and then up six and then stayed the same. I don't want to lose too little or too much ya know. Because if I lose too much I won't qualify. I am at 300 and can't lose too much for my BMI to fall below the required BMI. How much did you lose while waiting to get approved by insurance? Cheri:omg: -

Wow I am in the same boat. I wish someone would answer. I am currently at 300 pounds and would like to one day have children. I have heard that they can adjust it so that the baby can get the proper nutritions. I am sure that it is something that they talk to you about at your consultation. Let me know the answer if you have experienced it though....

:cry I talked to my insurance company and they gave me their website address to look at regarding obesity. It says that I have to have a 5 year medically documented history of obesity. I have been overweight my whole life, but just recently crossed over the 40 B.M.I. threhold. I am 5'7 and weigh 275. Has anyone else heard about this 5 year history of medical documentation that is needed? What if I don't have that? Am I not going to get approved? Am I wasting my time? :cry Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated..........

Thank you so much for replying so quickly. I have mentioned my weight to my doc too but I am sure there is not documentation of it. Like I said I just now crossed over to be "concidered obeses" even though I have always been way too heavy. So you found that with BCBS you had to be medically supervised for weight for a 5 year period??? Can you send me a copy of the appeal letter you wrote for my future reference? chericline@hotmail.com. I would greatly appreciate it. I can tell I am going to have a hard fight ahead of me. Please keep me in your prayers. Congrats on your weight loss...Anyone else have any other suggestions about the 5 year history of medically documented weight loss?

I have major back problems, 2 herniated discs and nerve damage from them. I also have gastric problems, like serious acid reflux. I am hoping that it might help my cause. I pray for more medical problems, if that sounds crazy. I want to get approved. Maybe I do have sleep apnea and do not know it. I just don't have a five year history of obesity. I am scared I am going to be denied and be fat forever. It is hard. I am so young. I just turned 30, and I would like to have kids one day. I fear I won't be able to run around after them and be the best mom I can be. Will my other medical problems help my cause when it comes to insurance?

I am having the same problem with the five years of documented obestiy needed. I do not a medical records that go back that far. Plus I used to lie about my weight to the doctor. I am really scared because I do not think that I can find that information out for them...Have you heard anything new??? Did you get what they wanted??? Have you been approved??? What type of insurance do you have????

Hi, I need help from someone. I am a 30 year old woman that weighs in at 275 pounds. I have battled my weight my whole life. Just recently did I cross over the 40 B.M.I., and need serious help. I have tried so many diets in the past Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Fit America, Slim Fast, Phentermine (prescription), counting calories, etc, etc. I have lost 30 pounds and then put it all back on and then some once I tried to eat regularly. I have back problems now front a car accident. My doctor told me that I need back surgery, but that I should have weight loss surgery before I have back surgery. There are more risks to the back surgery since I am overweight. I have seen my primary care physician once for weight and he sent me to a nutritionist. Didn't do much good...the nutritionist just told me "what I should be eating regarding portions" I know this, but don't do it. So anyways, I have called about Lap Band surgery. I have Blue Cross Blue Shield HMO. BCBS's website says that I have to have a five year medically documented history of morbid obesity. I don't have this in my medical history. I have always been heavy and overweight but not this heavy. It also said that I have to see my doctor for wieght loss for a 12 month period before I can qualify. Are there any ways around this? Has anyone else ever heard of needing a 5 year history of obesity that has been medically documented? I really need this surgery to help out with my back pain. I am so young still and find myself exhausted. I don't have kids but want to be able to one day. I need help...anyone have any advice regarding getting this procedure covered and where I should start.... Thanks, Cheri:phanvan
