My story began early in 2009, when I decided that I wanted to find out more information on the Lap Band. The closest city that did this in Canada was Winnipeg. I asked my GP if he knew of anyone in BC that did the procedure. Apparently there was a Dr. in Victoria BC, he made the contact and I booked an appointment with Dr. Amson. It took about 3 months to get the appointment, and I chickened out and cancelled it. Did some more research in the fall of 2009 and found that they were setting up a clinic for Lap Band Surgery's in Vancouver, at the False Creek Medical Centre. Bonus. They were ready to take appointment, as they were being 'certified', but left my name and they called me and we made an appointment, and chickened out again. Went to California the fall of 2009 and my cousin said she knew a friend who had it done and was very pleased with the results. Made the call to False Creek again the spring of 2010, and kept it, and am now scheduled for surgery May 19. It is not cheap $17,800, but my husband says that it can be claimed on our income tax, so I had them divide the bill in 3 so that I can use it again in 2012 taxes as well. I think the return will save about 60% (not exactly sure of the percentage). I am 60 years old, 330 lbs, am trying to get my BMI down to 50 or they may cancel the surgery. I am optimistic. The Dr's, Anesthesiologist, nutritionist and physiologist have been great. Still scares the hell our of me, but this is my last kick at the can. I have be obese all of my life, and if I don't have this surgery I am sure I will be dead within the next 10 years. My husband is so supportive but I have not told the rest of my family or friends as I don't need any negative input at this point. I'll let you all know how I make out.
