Did you do a barium swallow after surgery?
Kristy29 replied to Anwyn's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was released the same day. Surgery was around 7:30 and I was released a little after 3, with no barium swallow. I had to be drinking water and I had to pee. I can't imagine those of you who were discharged just a few hours after surgery, I was still sleeping then. I didn't get up until 1 pm. -
SoOoOoOoo Constipated :(
Kristy29 replied to Wimic's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I second the Smooth Move tea. I was banded on the 26th, and hadn't had a bm by Saturday, so I was told to take the milk of magnesia. Well, it was so gross I couldn't swallow it, so I tried the tea. It worked within a couple of hours. -
August Rush in bandland!

I had gummy Vitamins from before also, and I took one for the first time this morning. It was fine. I took like 5 bites out of it, lol, and then chewed it until it was almost liquid. -
What do you use to moisten your meat?
Kristy29 replied to Kristy29's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh, no not eating food yet, lol. Just thinking ahead, I was hungry when I posted this and food was about all I could think about. Haha! -
Yeah, the book does suck. And I admit, I am not listening to it. I mean, if other people can eat things it's not like I will get hurt if I eat them. So like I said, yesterday I had broth, and then this afternoon I had some strained cream of mushroom soup. I am still full from that, it feels so so so good. I went out today and bought some more soups and also some apple sauce. If I can eat these things in addition to the protein shakes, I will survive. It was so nice to eat something with a utensil, lol.

How many of you are low carb and how many aren't?
Kristy29 replied to Kristy29's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Nope, not temporary. That is supposed to be my diet until I reach goal, which who knows, could take 2 years or more. -
Does everything have to be surgar free?
Kristy29 replied to zeniada's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah, I used to use splenda also. But apparently it raises your blood sugar or something, I don't know. My doctor is super uber strict and has rules about everything. I feel like if I follow all his rules, I will be eating nothing for the rest of my life. -
Does everything have to be surgar free?
Kristy29 replied to zeniada's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor actually forbids splenda. I also think it is too soon for us to be having coffee, it can irritate the lining of the stomach. Instead of splenda they recommend Truvia or Sweet n Low. -
Sicly sweet taste for hours from protein shakes???
Kristy29 replied to kab1278's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Have you tried the chicken soup protein powder from unjury? To me it tastes like a cup-o-soup. I have been on clear liquids for 4 days and just moved to protein shakes today, and I am already tired of sweet things. I ordered a tub of the chicken soup and I can't wait for it to get here! -

I am sure a protein shake is fine. My doctor actually wants us to eat 2 protein shakes a day, right up until goal. I am not sure I plan on doing that, but we will see. If I were you, I'd eat a protein shake with a small piece of fruit. The fruit will help you feel full, since the shake goes right through the band. Another option is greek yogurt, you can add some fruit to it, it's really good and has a lot of protein. -
Nope, no Jello. They have a book, and it outlines exactly what you can have, and it says exactly what you can't have. It says in bold type no broth, but I had some yesterday. I know a lot of others are allowed to have it so I figure it wouldn't kill me. I wish I knew the reasons behind some of what they do, because they seem much stricter than most other doctors. I am having my first Protein shake today, but it's not really doing it for me. I realized yesterday that part of it is that I want to sit down and have a meal. I mean, normally I eat 3 meals a day, plus I am busy doing other things like working and doing errands. Now that I am home recovering, I am not doing anything, and with not eating either, my life is so empty. There is no buying food, preparing food, eating food. It's annoying and it makes me crazy, it's like my day is endless and has no separation in it, there is no difference between morning and night. I know it's only for 2 weeks, but right now that seems like a really really long time.

I have a PPO through Aetna. We called the insurance company ahead of time to find out, and it's really the only way to know. I had to pay 10% of the total cost, but we have a yearly cap of $1000, and since I had already paid some of that in co-pays and for some overage on testing, the max I will have to pay is $620.

Anything besides milk of magnesia?
Kristy29 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor told me that if I don't have a bm by Saturday to take 2 ounces of milk of magnesia. Well, I tried it and it is so so so gross, I really think I might puke. If I could just chug it and get it over with I might be able to do it, but no of course I have to sip it, 2 ounces would take 40 minutes. Is there something else I can take? Is there flavored milk of magnesia? How important is it that I have a bm now, I don't feel constipated? -
I just had my surgery on Thursday, and there is no way I could have gone to work the next day. Also, usually after surgery your doctor won't allow you to go back right away. Mine told me I could go back after my first office visit, which will be this Tuesday. Friday I was very sore, my port site hurt whenever I moved, walked or anything, and I needed help just getting out of a chair. I also was still groggy from the anesthesia and slept a lot. You need to worry about you and not your students, not your boss, no one else is as important as you are.

Anyone take a taxi home from surgery?
Kristy29 replied to bayareanan's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, will you have someone at home to be with you overnight? My doctor made sure that not only would I have a ride home, but that I would have a responsible adult staying with me at home in case something went wrong. I am not sure if the hospital or your doctor will allow you to leave alone like that. -
Welcome back! I am doing ok too, and like you I expected to feel much worse. Here's to our new lives!!

How long after surgery did you see yout doctor?
Kristy29 replied to dreamskin's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No, I was banded last Thursday the 26th and I have my first follow up appointment this Tuesday the 31st. That is a really long time, what about your dressings and stitches? I know mine will be taken out at my appointment on Tuesday. -
Anything besides milk of magnesia?
Kristy29 replied to Kristy29's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok, I got the tea, and when I only was halfway through the cup, it worked. Of course that cup took me over an hour to drink, lol. -
Anything besides milk of magnesia?
Kristy29 replied to Kristy29's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Haha, thanks. Like I said, I don't feel uncomfortable at all, and I am passing gas so I'm not concerned. I only was taking it because my doc told me to. I sent dh to the store for a laxative tea I knew we had (I work at CVS and had seen it before). I am going to try that, it says it works overnight so I will see what happens tomorrow. -
August Rush in bandland!
Kristy29 replied to AmberK's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey all, I guess I need to move over here now. I was banded on Thursday. Doing ok, still in some pain but getting better every day. I am on clear liquids and I am hungry!! I finally broke down and had some Isopure protein shake, but only 1 ounce. I can't wait until I can have a full shake on Monday! -
Well, I am still hungry this morning, so I am having some Isopure protein shakes. Still only 1 ounce at a time, but it's better than nothing. It is completely clear and not thick at all like the chocolate and vanilla shakes, and it is zero carbs so we decided it fits the criteria of a clear liquid.
-
Well I just had a popsicle and I feel much better. I wish I could have some broth, I am tired of everything being sweet.
-
Nope, no protein shakes until Monday. I can have tea (hot or cold), water, crystal light, diet snapple and sugar free popsicles. And I have to drink out of medicine cups that are 1 oz and drink one every 20 minutes.
-
Ok, I'm hungry!!! And I don't get to move from clear liquids to protein shakes until Monday. I am not going to make it!

I wouldn't consider chinese broccoli a mushy, it's usually really crunchy and that's why I like it. I ate a lot of vegetables with bean curd Soup on my pre-op diet. It's basically steamed veggies and tofu in broth. I bet that would be good, and if you put it in a blender it would get really mushy.
