I had my surgery in April 2006 when I was at 267 pounds. I did really well for about a year, losing 80+ pounds. If you can call puking all the time, burping, and hiccuping at every meal doing well. In the end I became very very ill and got to the point that I could not even keep broth down and I was choking up stomach acid while I slept, waking me up choking and sputtering and with my lungs on fire. I got NINE cavities that year- I don't know either do to malnutrition or all the acid from puking I am not certain. I no longer keep my band inflated, but I have it in my body still. Also, I moved away from where I was when I had the surgery and it is really difiicult to find another doctor that will take on yoiur maintenance and fills if they did not do the surgery. I would not recommend the surgery to everyone, you have to have a serious commitment to doing it correctly and be prepared to pay for lots of doctor visits for the rest of your life.
