Where are all the Michigan people at??
jeffslove replied to Cinnaberry's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I'm from Michigan. My boyfriend was banded November 10, 2006 by Dr. Deol. He's lost about eighty pounds, but is now "stuck" and can't loose anymore weight. He is at his maximum fill of 10cc's. He can't get anymore fills or he will be totally restricted. The band is still in place. He's frustrated as well as I am. Has anyone had a road block like this? -
First Fill Advice: No restriction
jeffslove replied to irwinlaura's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Very frustrated! My boyfriend was banded November 20, 2006 with a 10cc VG band. He did not have any restriction after the surgery. His first fill was December 19th with 2cc. He still had no restriction. He was then filled again today, Jan 9th with another 2.5 cc. He says he still has no restriction. He's getting frustrated and not very optimistic about going through this procedure. From what I've been reading on here, everyone says that it will take a few fills to hit the "Sweet spot". I just don't know how much more he can take. He has stopped losing weight and is very frusrated and angry that he made the wrong choice with this. Anyone in the same boat? He called his Dr. and they won't do another fill for a month. I hate to see him go through all this for nothing. -
Has anyone been on the optifast diet prior to the lapband procedure? My boyfriend is having the lapband procedure, but has to be on optifast for a month prior to it. He's having a hard time with this diet, as it is all liquid. Any suggestions on how to curb the appetite through this period???

Hi Everyone! My boyfriend was banded November 20, 2006. The first day he had clear liquids and kept them down with no problems. The second day, he wanted to graduate to full liquids. No prolbems there either. In fact, the fluids went right through him. Now, one week post op, he is eating regular foods and just as much as he was before the surgery. Has anyone done this? I'm just confused because his Dr. said that he should only be able to eat five ounces of food. He says he doesn't even feel like he had the surgery. He obviously hasn't had a fill yet, and can't have his first one for at least four weeks. I'm afraid he will gain his weight back. :think

Thank You Grace! I figured the same thing as you just stated. He can't have a fill for three weeks. I called his Dr. today. She said that same thing too. Thanks again for your feedback!!

The fluids wash the food down into the stomach, past the band, which is defeating the purpose of the bands job. The food is supposed to stay in the banded part of your stomach so you feel full. Give it time......good luck

I'm sorry I missed this thread......there are other Doctor's that will take another Doctor's patients. At least here in Michigan they do. You may consider going to another Doctor and explaining your situation. Good luck

Is the Opti-Fast the worst part? - Please?
jeffslove replied to Taymac's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Taymac, my boyfriend was on Optifast for a month prior to surgery. He went through exactly what you are going through. He lost a total of 29 pounds pre surgery. He kept busy and in between meals, he drank alot of water and crystal light. He also had sugar free popcicles. It gets easier! Don't give up. Because he followed the Optifast diet to a tee, and was very committed, the surgery only took an hour. His recovery time was cut in half. He was only banded four days ago. Don't give up! -
H Tann! My boyfriend lost a total of 29 pounds with the Optifast liquid protien diet. He stuck to it and when he got hungry, he filled up on water. He was very committed to this diet and it paid off. He also committed to the strict diet postop. Paulm235, you can stay on the Optifast diet as long as you want, but one month costs over $600.00, plus everytime he went on a liquid diet, or any diet, the weight came off, but as soon as he stopped the diet, the weight came back on double. The diet is to "lighten" the liver and put your body in a state of ketosis prior to surgery so the recovery time is shortened and the pain is less, not to mention the surgical procedure is cut down so you aren't under the general anesthesia for too long. If he had not committed to this preop diet, he would have been in surgery for two or more hours. He was banded in Troy Michigan by Dr. Zoe Deol M. D. Good luck to all of you!!

My boyfriend was just banded yesterday, Nov 20th. He was on the liquid diet for a month preop. The Dr. told me yesterday that because he was so committed to this diet and didn't cheat, the surgery only took an hour. His recovery time was cut in half, if not more. He's up walking around and is tolerating clear liquids very well. He says he feels great! Whatever you do, DON'T CHEAT! You can do this! Just stick with the program and you will be fine! Good luck!

Patient of Dr. Deol in Michigan
jeffslove replied to alison4333's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My boyfriend is being banded November 20th. Being his support person through all this, I met with Dr. Deol in her office last week. I cannot tell you how impressed I was with her. I had two pages of questions for her and she answered every single one of them very honestly and thoroughly. She took her time and made sure all our questions were answered and didn't rush through it. I am extremely confident that she will do an excellent job taking his life into her hands. -

Liquid diet question
jeffslove replied to philsfave's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Everyone here has great ideas. This site has helped me out tremendously! Thank you all for your info and support! The preop diet varies from Doctor to Doctor. My boyfriend is going to be banded November 20th by Dr. Zoe Deol in Troy Michigan at William Beaumont Hospital. He had to be on the Optifast diet four weeks prior to the surgery. Five more days to go. This diet consisted of liquid shakes and protein bars. So far he's lost 22 pounds. He drinks alot of water and also Crystal Light is a good one to keep the hunger down. Sugar free popicles are a good idea too. Hard candy works well also, as well as keeping busy and keeping your mind off food. I am his support person and I have to say that it's been very difficult watching him go through all of this, but I'm very proud of him for giving up the three things he loved most, which were, smoking, food and beer! The Optifast is expensive, and you can only get it through your Nutritionist. Good luck! -
2 Weeks Of Liquid How Did U Survive?
jeffslove replied to FullofGRACE's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am my boyfriend's support person through all of this. He started the Optifast liquid diet two weeks ago. Two more weeks to go. He hasn't had any headaches, but complains of being depressed. I keep telling him that his body is in mourning from the food. Not to mention all the things he had to give up, including smoking and BEER! He's lost 19 pounds so far. I know after the banding on November 20th, he will be a healthier person and a much happier one!! -
