  1. I told my sisters and my support person/friend of my plans. I intentionally did not tell people I used to work with and still kept in contact. My housecleanning gal knew because I rescheduled my cleaning day that week and she volunteered to dog sit while I was in the hospital. Well, a friend from my old workplace found out because her husband, who is my handiman, came to my home (a day earlier than planned) to fix something and asked the housecleaning gal where I was. She told him where I was and what was happening and of course, my office friend found out and blabbed it at the office. I had intentionally not told her because she can't keep a secret. Thank God, my support person called me and clued me in what happened. I immediately emailed my office friend and the one person I knew for sure she had told and said I did not tell anyone at work and perferred no one else knew. But when I meet with the others from work, I can tell most of them know I had surgery from their comments. Funny thing now, my office friend who passed on the information does not have anything to do with me, even after multiple attempts on my part to reconnect. Some friend; we were very close for years! Just when I thought I had all my bases covered, things happen.

    Who are you??

Hi ,my name is Rose. I'm a retired RN and I'm 60. I'm single and live with my wonder dog, Molly, who is 14. I love being retired and being able to work on my greeting cards and going to the Y. Like many of us, I have been over weight for all of my life but more so in the past 25 years. I was a hospital nurse and switch to geriatric nursing, surveying health care facilities in my state. Because of the traveling I did the first 9 years in that job, I gained over 100 pounds ( I was overweight before but not as much). I would be away from home, staying in motels and eating in restaurants. I developed arthritis in one of knees and then later type 2 diabetes. Well, my knee got so bad and the ortho doctor said I needed to lose weight before they would do surgery, I finally had to face the issue and realized I couldn't do it on my own. I was banded the first part of August and have lost 66 pounds since then but a total of 125 pounds (59 pounds in the months before surgery)! I want to lose 85-90 pounds more. Well, I'm off my diabetic meds and my blood sugars are in the 70-80's and off my bladder med J and blood pressure med. I have gone from zero exercise to exercising 5 days a week. I do Water walking for an hour and then water jogging for 45-60 minutes. I would never have guess I could do this a year ago. The scale doesn't move fast enough to suit me but I keep reminding myself that I didn't gain all this weight in a year so I can't expect to lose it in 7 months! I cleaned out some dresser drawers today and tried on some tee shirts to see if I should keep them for this summer. It was a great laugh!! They were so big but it was also sad! They went in the donation pile. My only problem has been replenishing my wardrobe! I buy things on sale and also buy 2 sizes smaller if I find a good deal so I can have something waiting for me. I love all the compliments from my friends and church people. It really keeps me going when the scale is being stubborn! Have a great week, everyone!

    making ahead of time

It probably depends if you are mixing the protein with milk. I used to survey health care facilities and one of the things we watched for was if staff mixed protein supplements with milk and stored them in the refrigerator for more than just a few hours (less than 24 hours). There may be a chance of food borne illness if made in advance but we were surveying nursing homes and the population there can be compromised. I suggest asking your dietitian.

    Aqua Aerobics - Anything similar?

I have severe arthritis in my right knee. I have to use a cane to walk outside a pool. I was hesitant to do water aerobics for a long time but after I had aqua PT with an in pool treadmill, well, I was a changed lady! Instead of doing aerobics in a class setting, I walk laps in the lap pool (3/4 mile) and then switch to a warm water exercise pool and jog for 30-45 minutes 5 days a week. I too bought a waterproof MP3 player and it's heaven!! I was pretty bored before but now the time flies by. I think I jog better to tunes!! I found the aerobics was too hard on my knee but the walking and jogging are just fine.

    How often do you exercise

I exercise 5 days a week: 45 minutes of pool walking, 30 minutes of water jogging and then joint exercises for OA of right knee. If I can't get a lane in the lap pool to walk, then I jog in the warm water exercise pool for an hour. Before surgery, I never exercise and now I can't wait to get to the pool!
  6. Hi! My name is Rose and I'm from Des Moines, Iowa. I was banded August 3rd. I'm a retired RN and was banded a few days after my 60th birthday. I'm down almost 90 pounds (in the past year) in total but 30 since pre-op diet. I agree with the others, since I retired, I finally decided to take care of myself and feel good about the weight loss and will even feel better with each goal I meet. I even enjoy pool walking and jogging!! What a change!
