I used to be thin. I began gaining weight in college. I gained weight during each of my two long term relationships (2nd one was a marriage). Obesity runs in my family, so it was very concerning for me when I got over 200 lbs.
I have been over 200 lbs for the last 8-10 years. I have tried most diets to lose weight but can never get below that 200 lb threshold.
I graduated law school in May 2009 and passed the Bar and became licensed in October 2009. When the New Year came around I had only one resolution: 2010 was going to be MY year. It was going to be the year I took control of my body and health. It was going to be the year I began working full time as an attorney- whether that was by working for a law firm or by opening my own solo practice.
I knew my insurance through my employer at the start of the year would cover the surgery. So I decided to do it. In January, I met with my surgeon. We discussed options. I was only interested in Lap Band. I began the pre-surgical approval procedures, which took several months.
While I was waiting for the final approval, I was offered my dream job. Which meant I needed to get approved for and schedule my surgery for between employers. I got final approval for surgery and scheduled my surgery date- Friday, April 16, 2010. I quit smoking. I put in my notice at my 1st job. I got COBRA to cover the weeks between insurance coverage to make sure I was still covered for surgery. I short sightedly scheduled to start my new job the Wednesday after surgery.
I had gained 8 lbs between my first visit and my approval visit to schedule surgery, so I had to go on a low carb diet the 2 1/2 weeks prior to surgery. I did so (it was hard!) and lost the 8 lbs I had gained. So on surgery date I weighed about the same as I had during initial meeting-- 240.5 lbs.
Surgery was last Friday. It went well. Hospital kept me overnight to monitor my oxygen since I am on a CPAP machine. I was grateful to stay in the hospital because the bed had rails and I was in quite a bit of pain. I went home the next afternoon.
Recovery took longer than I thought it would, so I put off starting my new job until the following Monday (this coming Monday). New Employer is incredibly understanding and flexible.
So far I am doing pretty well! Have lost 14.5 lbs in 1 week since surgery!
