I have been over weight for about 17 years now. I gained some weight with my first child and lost most of it, but never did lose that last 10 lbs., then I got pregnant with my second child and added about 20 more lbs. that I never lost, so at this point I weighed about 30 lbs. more than I should have. When my second child was 7 months old I had gallbladder disease and had to have emergency surgery to have my gallbladder removed. It could have just been my imagination, but it seemed like I had an even harder time losing weight after that surgery. My weight crept up about 10 more lbs.! About 6 months after my surgery I found out I was pregnant again! I added another 20 lbs. onto my ever growing physique with that pregnancy....so I weighed about 60 lbs. more than I should have!! At this point in my life I was soooo busy being a mommy to 3 precious girls that I hardly ever thought of myself. All my time and all my energy was used on them....(which I would not change for the world!) Even though I was extremely embarrassed and ashamed of my weight and how I looked, I was so blessed to have a loving husband and 3 wonderful daughters and every day was a new fun adventure. The girls were very involved in different things at school and on several sports teams so time just flew by going from one event to another. During this time my weight just continued to climb little by little. I tried several different diets...Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers (numerous times), Atkins and others....each time I would lose about 20 lbs. and gain about 30 lbs. back! Now that my girls are just about grown...21, 18 & 16, I have decided it is time to get serious about my health and take care of myself! My gynocologist recommended I look into lapband and that is how I got where I am today. I am scheduled to have my surgery on April 27th and I am soooo ready!!! I would do it today if I could! I know that this is not going to be an overnight miracle cure, but I feel like with the lap band I am going to finally have the tool I need to make weight loss work for me! I am hoping that I am a much smaller, happier & healthier person in April of 2011! I can't wait!!!
Update to my story: I had lap band surgery April 27, 2010 at 270 lbs. I very slowly lost 81 lbs. by January 2012 I was at my lowest weight of 189 and I was feeling pretty good except for bad acid reflux. I went in to my doctor to see why my acid reflux was so bad and he said it was because my band had slipped, so he did a partial unfill. I immediately started gaining weight even though I was still trying my best to watch what I was eating. In April 2014 my weight had crept back up to 220! I was SO mad at myself & I was very disappointed to find out that my doctor had moved out of state. I went in to see a new doctor hoping to get a fill so I would have a little more restriction, but the doctor said my band was still slipped & was probably not going to move back in place. He suggested I have a revision to a sleeve. He felt like I would have fewer complications and better results with the sleeve. He took EVERYTHING out of my band so I had no restriction what so ever! A very bad & scary situation for me!! We set my surgery date for June 27, 2014. Between April & June I managed to gain another 11 lbs! I lost 4 lbs. from my 4 day pre-op diet, so the day I went in for my sleeve surgery I weighed 227. Here is the real kicker, I am now on day 4 post op & I have not had anything solid in 7 days now, I have not even drank much of anything besides water or isopure the past 3 days and nothing at all for 2 days before that and I now weigh MORE than I did when I went in for my surgery!! It's incredibly frustrating! Especially when I am in so much pain from the surgery, to not see the scale move downward is like a slap in the face! So incredibly discouraging! I hope things change REAL soon!! At this point I wouldn't suggest a revision for anyone. The pain has been a hundred times worst than it was with my lap band surgery & to not see any results while you have all this pain is quite simply depressing! I'm at 229 right now.... I got up to 234 right after surgery! Everything I've read or watched on you tube about people having a revision from the band to a sleeve they have all been very positive and said it was the best thing they have ever done. I'm hoping that in the next week or so I can change my story to say I feel that way also.
